Ukraine war: UN and Red Cross should investigate prison deaths, says Ukraine

Ukraine has called for the United Nations and the Red Cross to be allowed to investigate the deaths of more than 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) in an attack in occupied territory.

The Red Cross said it is seeking access to the prison in order to help with evacuating and treating the wounded.

Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of attacking the camp.

Unverified Russian video footage of the aftermath shows a tangle of wrecked bunk beds and badly charred bodies.

Warning: You may find details below disturbing

Exactly what happened at the prison camp in Olenivka, which is controlled by the Russian-backed self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DNR), remains unclear.

Ukraine says the site was targeted by Russia in an effort to destroy evidence of torture and killing. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the incident as a "deliberate Russian war crime."

Gazprom stops Latvia's gas in latest Russian cut to EU
42 minutes ago

Russian energy giant Gazprom says it has suspended gas supplies to Latvia - the latest EU country to experience such action amid tensions over Ukraine.

Gazprom accused Latvia of violating conditions of purchase, but gave no details of that alleged violation.

Latvia relies on neighbouring Russia for natural gas imports, but its government says it does not expect Gazprom's move to have a major impact.

Meanwhile, Ukraine says it killed 170 Russian troops in the past 24 hours.

Ukraine's military also said its forces had destroyed two Russian arms dumps in the Kherson area.

Russia, Ukraine trade blame for shelling of POW prison
Source: AP

By SUSIE BLANN

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia and Ukraine on Friday accused each other of shelling a prison in a separatist eastern region that reportedly killed dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war who were captured after the fall of Mariupol in May.

Russia said that Ukraine used U.S.-supplied HIMARS multiple rocket launchers in the attack on the prison in Olenivka, in the Russian-controlled Donetsk region. Officials from Russia and the separatist authorities in Donetsk said the attack killed 53 Ukrainian POWs and wounded 75.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Lt. Gen. Igor Konashenkov described the strike as a “bloody provocation” aimed at discouraging Ukrainian soldiers from surrendering. He said that eight prison guards were also wounded by the shelling.

The Ukrainian military denied any rocket or artillery strikes on Olenivka, insisting that it wasn’t shelling civilian areas and only strikes Russian military targets.

There is a tendency for governments to lie about such things...

You are treading softly there and they are not dreams.

Again, I can neither agree nor understand your whitewashing of certain actions. If you are dead it is neither important nor correct if they killed a hundred or a thousand at the same time.
I find disgusting trying to justify that an act committed for King & Country is wrong and the same act committed for Oil & Profits is right. As a British officer said: What is the difference between throwing children into the fire or raining fire on top of children. The act is the same, burning children alive.

(In a personal note, I was actually living under a dictatorship, one of those clap in the back by the Government of the United States of America for doing such a good job; like Saddam Hussein, for example).

If you are a member of the Armed Forces and you participate in a coup d'etat, you are a traitor, the act is treason. For King, for Country or for a bottle of wine, you are a traitor.

Now, for our Russian friend...

MOSCOW, June 26. /TASS/. About 70 Ukrainian militants who were holed up in the Azot chemical plant in Severodonetsk were taken prisoner, LPR (Lugansk People’s Republic) Ambassador to Russia Rodion Miroshnik announced on Sunday."First of all, a lot of forces were eliminated there. Quite active assault operations were conducted there and part of them [Ukrainian militants] tried to break through towards the Seversky Donets and some part could have escaped. Not quite many of them were captured, at least about 50-70 men whom local residents are talking about," Miroshnik said in a live broadcast on the Soloviev Live TV Channel.
Can you refute him?, are you still in posession of the absolute truth?

"At present, between 1,000 and 1,200 civilians are held as hostages on the territory of Azot. They have been held there against their will, for quite a while. There is no water, no food, no medicines. About 127 of them are children," Vitaly Kiselev said.
But, if you believe everything Russia says, you should believe everything Ukraine says. Are you rolling a die to believe things?

According to the Russian defense minister, the Ukrainian army lost 196 tanks and other armored vehicles, 12 aircraft, a helicopter, 65 drones, six long-range missile systems, 166 field artillery pieces and mortars, as well as 215 vehicles. "The enemy left 39 tanks and other armored vehicles, 11 artillery pieces and mortars in Lisichansk," he added.
Claimed: 196; confirmed: 39. Do we think Ukraine is less creative in its counting? Still, this is what they "report", with no
independent confirmation.

Russia brands Ukrainian steel plant defenders terrorists
Source: AP

By SUSIE BLANN and SUZAN FRASER

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia’s Supreme Court on Tuesday declared Ukraine’s Azov Regiment a terrorist organization, a designation that could lead to terror charges against some of the captured fighters who made their last stand inside Mariupol’s shattered steel plant.

Scores of Azov fighters are being held by Moscow since their surrender in mid-May. Russian authorities have opened criminal cases against them, accusing them of killing civilians. The addition of terrorism charges could mean even longer prison sentences.

In a statement, the Azov Regiment dismissed the high court ruling, accusing Russia of “looking for new excuses and explanations for its war crimes.” It urged the U.S. and other countries to declare Russia a terrorist state.

The Azov soldiers played a key part in the defense of Mariupol, holding out for weeks at the southern port city’s steel mill despite punishing attacks from Russian forces. Ukraine’s president hailed them and other defenders at the plant as heroes.

Not:
Ukrainian steel plant defenders
but:
Ukraine’s Azov Regiment
Have you read or seen something about them?, the use of the swastika proves nothing but it's widely disliked.

Amnesty International says Ukrainian military is practically using human shields.
Amnesty International issued a report on Thursday accusing the Ukrainian military of stationing its troops and artillery near hospitals, schools and residential buildings in ways that may amount to war crimes. The international human rights organization says it spent two months in Ukraine interviewing locals and collecting physical evidence to compile the report.

"Viable alternatives were available that would not endanger civilians – such as military bases or densely wooded areas nearby, or other structures further away from residential areas," reads the report.

Mozart Group: the western ex-military personnel training Ukrainian recruits.
The Guardian. UK.

Curiously enough, Russian companies doing the same are "mercenaries".
The point was and still is to pull people out of their information bubbles and try to get them to consider looking at objective
information on the events, as in all events.

I already knew this rather clearly, but not everything our favorite Russian forum member says is untrue. His justifications for the war and support of Russian imperialism are nationalist in nature and unhelpful in finding solutions to the war. Yet, Ukraine's military is not acting in accordance with human rights standards and these practices extend beyond merely the Azov Battalion.

There should be no illusions of either state, their respective allies, nor their organized militaries being innocent, valiant, justified, etc. War is hell, and states force men to war, people don't just wake up and decide to level cities one morning. Profiteers jeer from the stadiums of modern colosseums where working men are looked down upon as no better than beasts and in many cases treated even worse.

That said, we should still help Ukraine and hope they win.
