At least 60 reportedly killed, including children, in airstrikes in Yemen, says aid agency
Source: Washington Post

CAIRO — At least 60 people were reportedly killed and another 100 injured in airstrikes in Yemen on Friday, according to an aid organization, as the death toll mounts in a particularly violent week for the war-torn country.

Humanitarian organization Save the Children released a statement on Twitter saying that at least three children are among the dozens of people killed Friday, noting that “the true number is feared to be higher.”

The Saudi-led coalition that intervened in the war in Yemen in 2015 has ramped up its airstrikes in recent days, following a Houthi-claimed attack on Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The UAE is a partner of the Saudi-led coalition that intervened on behalf of the Yemeni government following the Houthi takeover of the capital at the beginning of the war.

Saudi airstrikes hit Yemen's Houthis after Jiddah attack

By AHMED AL-HAJ and SAMY MAGDY

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — A Saudi-led coalition fighting Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen unleashed a barrage of airstrikes on the capital and a strategic Red Sea city, officials said Saturday. At least seven people were killed.

The overnight airstrikes on Sanaa and Hodeida — both held by the Houthis — came a day after the rebels attacked an oil depot in the Saudi city of Jiddah, their highest-profile assault yet on the kingdom.

Brig. Gen. Turki al-Malki, a spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, said the strikes targeted “sources of threat” to Saudi Arabia, according to the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

He said the coalition intercepted and destroyed two explosives-laden drones early Saturday. He said the drones were launched from Houthi-held civilian oil facilities in Hodeida, urging civilians to stay away from oil facilities in the city.

New Demands for Yemen War Powers Resolution as Report Reveals Depth of US Complicity in Airstrikes
by Brett Wilkins
June 6, 2022

Introduction:
(Common Dreams) A leading peace group on Monday said a new report detailing the depth of U.S. support for Saudi-led airstrikes in Yemen—hundreds of which have been called war crimes by international legal experts—shows the need for Congress to pass a recently introduced measure to end American complicity in one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

According to The Washington Post—which along with the Security Force Monitor (SFM) at Columbia Law School's Human Rights Institute analyzed thousands of news reports and images to identify warplanes from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates that have attacked Yemen—"a substantial portion of the air raids were carried out by jets developed, maintained, and sold by U.S. companies, and by pilots who were trained by the U.S. military."

This, despite a February 2021 pledge by President Joe Biden to end U.S. support for "offensive operations" in the Saudi-led war—a promise that has been repeatedly sidestepped via arms sales and a $500 million maintenance contract.

"This is an absolutely devastating analysis of U.S. support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen," tweeted the Quaker peace group Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL). "Our ongoing complicity is a stain on our nation's soul. Just further reason for Congress to pass the newly introduced Yemen War Powers Resolution."

Houthi Drones in 'Warning Strike' on Tanker in First Attack Since Yemen Truce Expired
Updated October 22, 2022

Introduction:
(The National) Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed they attacked a cargo ship at an oil terminal in the south of the country as a “warning strike” on Friday.

It was the first military action announced by the Iran-backed Houthis since a truce between Yemen's warring sides expired on October 2.

The Houthis said the attack by explosive-laden drones was meant to prevent pro-government forces from using the port for oil exports.

The Marshall Islands-flagged tanker Nissos Kea was the target. The Greek owners said it was undamaged.

The incident happened in Ash Shihr, near the Yemeni city of Mukalla, about 585 kilometres east of the rebel-held capital of Sanaa in territory held by pro-government forces for years.
