Yes, Trump and the Republican Party Own the Attack on Paul and Nancy Pelosi
by Mark Follman
October 31, 2022

Introduction:
(Mother Jones)The suspect who allegedly targeted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and brutally beat her husband Paul with a hammer after breaking into their San Francisco home late last week was charged in federal court on Monday with assault and attempted kidnapping. A trail of recent social media activity indicates that 42-year-old David DePape was fixated on a toxic brew of far-right conspiracy theories and may have been delusional and suicidal. On Monday, evidence emerged suggesting that DePape was motivated at least in part by demagoguery espoused at great length by Donald Trump and his allies in the Republican Party.

According to an FBI criminal complaint, DePape told police investigators that he’d intended to kidnap Nancy Pelosi, who was in Washington at the time, and to “break her kneecaps” while interrogating her. In an echo of the January 6 insurrection, he had zip ties with him for his planned hostage-taking and assault. DePape further stated that he regarded Pelosi as the “leader of the pack” of lies told by the Democratic Party, and that he saw himself as similar to Americans during the Revolutionary War, “fighting against tyranny without the option of surrender.”

Wherever DePape may fall on the continuum of deeply aggrieved to mentally ill, his case is Exhibit A for the escalating dangers of stochastic terrorism—a method of rhetorical incitement that Trump brazenly ushered into the American presidency and successfully spread throughout the GOP. By continually vilifying alleged political enemies while in office, Trump emboldened far-right extremists, giving rise to white-supremacist violence and the January 6 insurrection.

There is no both sides-ing this problem, despite assertions to that effect by Fox News pundits and Republican officials in the days since the harrowing assault at the Pelosi’s home. While examples of politically motivated threats and attacks have also emerged from the left in recent years, including the 2017 mass shooting at a congressional baseball practice and a recent plot to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the collective behavior by leaders of the Trump-dominated Republican Party has zero equivalence across the aisle.

The Party of Violence
by Mitchell Zimmerman
November 2, 2022

Introduction:
(Other Words) A MAGA “patriot” broke into the home of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in order to kidnap her, break her kneecaps, and perhaps beat her to death with a hammer.

When he didn’t find her, he fractured the skull of her 82-year-old husband. “Where’s Nancy? Where’s Nancy?” the attacker demanded of Pelosi’s husband, echoing the chant of the January 6 insurrectionists who sought to lynch Pelosi.

Echoing him, Republican Marjorie Taylor Green “liked” a Facebook comment that “a bullet to the head would be quicker” than removing Pelosi through elections.

Republicans have devoted $40 million to ads that demonize Nancy Pelosi in terms far beyond political disagreement. Little wonder someone took these attacks seriously and sought to kill her.

Republican leaders are responding with more conspiracy theories or, at best, feeble denunciations. “There’s no place for violence,” said the Republican governors of Virginia and Maryland.

caltrek’s comment: Many claim that the Republican party is given credit for being better on the crime issue than Democrats. How can one come to that conclusion given the tendency for many of that party’s politicians to actually encourage violence on the right?

Please don’t respond with false equivalencies concerning Black Lives Matter (BLM) or some other such nonsensical formulation. Democratic politicians and most BLM leaders condemned the violence that some insisted on associating with BLM*. Much more so than Republicans have regarding to their wing nuts. Clearly, the GOP needs to do more to reign in the far-right extremists that are getting way out of control in this country.

* Do not confuse explaining causes of bad behavior with supporting such behavior.

UVA shooting: 3 killed, 2 wounded and community told to shelter in place with suspect still at large

Updated on: November 14, 2022 / 10:08 AM / CBS/AP
Charlottesville, Virginia — The University of Virginia was locked down and classes were canceled on Monday morning as police searched for a student in connection with a fatal shooting the previous night. The university's president confirmed in a letter to the community that three people were killed and two others wounded in the shooting on Sunday evening.

The suspect, identified as university student Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. by UVA President Jim Ryan and the UVA police force, remained at large, and there was a "complete search" of the campus underway. Police released the photo of Jones below, from the university's athletics website, where he was listed as a member of the UVA football team in 2018, when he was a freshman.

The warning for students and staff to shelter in place came late Sunday night after a report that shots had been fired on the campus. The university's emergency management issued an alert on Twitter at 10:42 p.m. of an "active attacker firearm." "There has been a shooting on Culbreth Road and the suspect is at large and considered armed and dangerous," Ryan said in a tweet, asking the university community to "please shelter in place."

Ryan later sent out the letter with the message to the university community, saying he was "heartbroken to report that the shooting has resulted in three fatalities," with two others being hospitalized and treated for unspecified wounds.

4 U of Idaho students found dead in home outside campus in what police are calling a homicide
Source: CNN
A homicide investigation is underway after four University of Idaho students were found dead Sunday at a home just outside the campus, police and the university’s president said.

Officers responding before noon to a call of an unconscious person discovered the fatalities, the Moscow Police Department said in a news release.

“It is with deep sadness that I share with you that the university was notified today of the death of four University of Idaho students living off-campus believed to be victims of homicide,” university president Scott Green said in a statement to the campus community.

Police have not released the causes of death or identities of the victims. Police have indicated “there is no ongoing threat,” the university tweeted Sunday without elaborating.

Coroner: Idaho students were stabbed to death in their beds
Source: AP

By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS 2 hours ago

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Four University of Idaho students who were found dead in a rental house Sunday were stabbed to death in their beds and likely were asleep, a county coroner told a cable news channel.

Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt also told NewsNation on Thursday that each victim suffered multiple stab wounds from a “pretty large knife.”

“It has to be somebody pretty angry in order to stab four people to death,” Mabbutt told NewsNation. The victims were stabbed in the chest and upper body, the coroner said.

Efforts by The Associated Press to reach Mabbutt by telephone Friday were diverted to an Idaho State Police spokesperson, who did not immediately return messages.

Suspect named after 5 dead, more than a dozen injured at LGBTQ nightclub

Source: ABC News
Five people were killed and more than a dozen others were injured in a shooting at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado, officials said. The venue, Club Q, in Colorado Springs, described the shooting as a "hate attack," saying it was "devastated by the senseless attack on our community." At least 18 people were injured, officials said.

The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldrich, police told reporters at a news conference Sunday morning. At least two guns, including a long gun, were recovered from the scene.

UCHealth Memorial Hospital North in Colorado Springs is caring for five patients who were injured in the shooting, according to a statement from the hospital. Police said they received the first call at about 11:57 p.m. on Saturday. They said a possible suspect was also injured and was in custody.

"Numerous officers and medical [personnel immediately responded to the area and officers immediately made entry," Lt. Pamela Castro, spokesperson for Colorado Springs Police Department, told reporters. "They did locate one individual who is believed to be a suspect inside.”

Pre-dawn shooting at University of New Mexico kills 1

Source: Associated Press
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A 19-year-old man was killed and a 21-year-old man was wounded in a predawn shooting Saturday at the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque, where police said it was not an active shooting or a threat to others on campus.

School officials called off a basketball game scheduled with in-state rival New Mexico State.

The shooting took place about 3 a.m. and the wounded man was taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries, police said. His condition was not immediately disclosed.

Albuquerque police called the shooting “a singular incident” and not a threat to other students on campus.

Suspect in Colorado Springs LGBTQ club shooting charged with 5 counts of first-degree murder
Source: NBC News

Colorado prosecutors on Monday charged Anderson Lee Aldrich with five counts of first-degree murder, along with allegations that the killings were part of a bias attack, court filings showed.

Deputy District Attorney Brent Nelson also filed a motion calling for the arrest warrant affidavit in the 10-count case against Aldrich, 22, to be sealed.

"If the information supporting the Arrest Warrant Affidavit was to be released, it could jeopardize the ongoing case investigation," wrote Nelson, who is with the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Aldrich allegedly walked into the LGBTQ nightspot and opened fire with a high-powered rife before patrons confronted him and stopped any further shooting, police said.

Teenager dies and 22 injured in twin rush-hour blasts in Jerusalem
Source: The Guardian
A teenage boy has died and 22 people have been injured in two blasts targeting rush-hour commuters in Jerusalem, attacks that hark back to the violence of the second intifada, or Palestinian uprising.

The first explosion occurred shortly after 7am local time on Wednesday near a bus stop packed with civilians on the western outskirts of the divided city. The second blast, half an hour later near a busy junction in the Ramot settlement, north of Jerusalem, injured another five people. The teenager who died from his injuries in hospital was named as a dual Israeli-Canadian citizen, Aryeh Schupak, 16.

Four people were in serious condition, according to Israel’s rescue service, Magen David Adom. Yosef Haim Gabay, a medic who was at the bus stop, told Army Radio there was “damage everywhere” and that some of the wounded were bleeding heavily. Ambulance and police sirens blared across the city.
