FBI data show surge in murders in 2020
Source: NBC News
Murders rose by nearly 30 percent in 2020, with more than 21,500 reported last year, according to the FBI's annual Uniform Crime Report.

The total was up from 16,669 in 2019, according to the FBI, one of the sharpest increases in murders in several years. The national homicide rate, 6.5 per 100,000 people, is still lower than it was during much of the 1990s.

"That's an unprecedented one-year rise," said Richard Rosenfeld, a criminology professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

..

Reports of violent crime, which includes homicide, rape, aggravated assault and other crimes, also were up last year. The rate of violent crime spiked by about 5 percent, to 398.5 reported incidents per 100,000 people, according to FBI data.

NYC security guard stabbed over mask dispute at Apple Store: authorities
Source: The Hill
A security guard at an Apple Store in New York City was stabbed on Friday evening by a male customer over a dispute on the store’s masking policy, police say, according to ABC7 New York.

A 37-year-old security guard was stabbed multiple times around 6:30 p.m. on Friday after a customer was told that masks had to be worn if he wanted to go inside, police said.

The interaction dissolved into violence after the man refused to wear a mask, and the two exchanged words. After their exchange, the man pulled out a sharp object, and the security guard was stabbed. The suspect had already left the scene by the time police arrived at the Manhattan location on West 14th Street, according to NBC New York.

The guard, who was stabbed in multiple places on his body, is expected to recover from his injuries after he was taken to Bellevue Hospital, according to ABC7. The guard's identity was also not made clear.

By Miriam Berger
Today at 12:39 p.m. EDT

A knife-wielding man rampaged through a Tokyo metro train on Sunday, setting a fire and injuring at least 17 passengers as commuters headed into the city center for Halloween festivities, Japan’s NHK public television reported. Police have made an arrest.

Police said that the assailant wore a “character outfit” that could have resembled a Halloween costume or a comic book character and that no motive for the attack was immediately discernible, Kyodo News reported.

A man in his 20s was arrested at the scene.

At least one person, a man in his 60s or 70s, was stabbed and is in serious condition, according to Japanese media. It was not clear how many people were injured by the knife, the fire or the resulting chaos as passengers fled the scene. The express train on the Keio Line made an emergency stop so people could disembark.
