DOJ opens investigation into police response during Uvalde school shooting
Source: Yahoo! News
The Department of Justice will launch an investigation into if and how local police failed to stop or slow the massacre at Robb Elementary School last week.

“At the request of Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin, the U.S. Department of Justice will conduct a Critical Incident Review of the law enforcement response to the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas,” officials said Sunday.

Nineteen fourth-grade students and two teachers were fatally shot Tuesday inside their classroom as police waited outside.

“The goal of the review is to provide an independent account of law enforcement actions and responses that day, and to identify lessons learned and best practices to help first responders prepare for and respond to active shooter events,” the DOJ said. The report will be released at the end.

Multiple people were shot on Saturday night during an exchange of gunfire in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee, police said.

Chattanooga Police officers were patrolling downtown at about 10:48 p.m. local time when they "observed multiple parties exchanging gunfire and numerous people fleeing the area."

"Our Officers began rendering aid to the victims as well as assisting others to safety," a police spokesperson said. "They were able to detain at least one person of interest in the incident in the moments after the shooting began."

One dead in reported shooting on grounds of the Ohio Statehouse

Source: Columbus Dispatch
One person died Sunday evening in an apparent shooting on the Ohio Statehouse grounds, the State Highway Patrol reported.

Around 10 p.m. on Sunday evening, Patrol officers responded to gunshots at the northwest corner of the Ohio Statehouse and located a male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, Sgt. Brice Nihiser, spokesperson for the Patrol, said.

Responding officers attempted to perform life-saving measures on the victim, but the victim died shortly after, Nihiser said. The victim has not been identified at this time.

The incident is not related to any official Statehouse business, Nihiser said. The Patrol is in charge of providing security services for the Ohio Statehouse.

Nebraska car crash involving crowd of pedestrians kills 2, injures 19

By Sara Sorcher
May 30, 2022 at 4:54 a.m. EDT
Nebraska authorities said a car crash involving pedestrians has killed two and sent 19 to hospitals, including one with life-threatening injuries.

The two people killed were occupants of one of the vehicles involved in the crash.

"Multiple pedestrians were also injured," the Lincoln Police Department said in a Facebook post. Those taken to hospitals included "a number of people who were present on the sidewalk area at the time of the crash."

The department said it was investigating the "fatality accident" that took place near 52nd and O streets in Lincoln and urged people to avoid the area.

This is a developing story.

U.S. marks Memorial Day weekend with at least 12 mass shootings
Source: Washington Post
These incidents, gleaned from local news reports and police statements, meet the threshold for mass shootings as defined by the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit research organization.

GVA defines a mass shooting as one in which “four or more people are shot or killed, not including the shooter.” Several of those shootings occurred at parties, and one at a Memorial Day event.

At least eight people have been killed and 55 injured in the mass shootings over the holiday weekend, according to GVA and local news sources. Since the Uvalde shooting last Tuesday, at least 11 people have been killed and 67 injured in mass shootings.

Brian Stelter, chief media correspondent and news anchor at CNN, interrupted a broadcast Sunday about the response to the mass shooting in Uvalde to tell viewers about another — in Tennessee.

“Mass killings like Buffalo and Uvalde become national news, but many mass shootings do not. They just end up being local stories,” Stelter said, in a clip that has been viewed over 370,000 times on Twitter.

On Saturday evening, six teenagers were injured by gunfire in Chattanooga, Tenn., in what Mayor Tim Kelly said was probably “an altercation between other teenagers.”

On Sunday, there were at least another five mass shootings, including one at a Memorial Day festival in Taft, Okla.

Authorities said one person was killed and seven people were injured, including a minor. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said a suspect turned himself in and was in custody.

Meanwhile, one person died and three others were injured during a shooting at a party in Merced County, Calif., the sheriff’s office said. One victim was still in “critical condition” Sunday afternoon.

The shootings continued into Monday, when police in Benton Harbor, Mich., were called to an area around a liquor store where a shooting had taken place in the early hours of Monday. One man was dead, and six were injured by gunfire, according to WNDU.

Around the same time, two people died and two others were injured during a shooting at a party in Port Richmond, Pa., according to statements from law enforcement. The victims ranged in age from 14 to 21, and police told FOX 29 Philadelphia they found 47 shell casings at the scene.

It was the city’s “2nd DOUBLE HOMICIDE scene in two hours,” according to Steve Keeley, a reporter for FOX 29 Philadelphia, after a father and his 9-year-old son were shot inside their car in Philadelphia on Sunday evening, law enforcement said.

In the aftermath of the Uvalde shooting, many local leaders and community representatives issued emotional pleas for action. As The Washington Post has reported, it is unlikely that Congress will be able to pass gun-control measures.

One dead, two injured after gunfire breaks out after Morris Jeff graduation; 'This is horrible'
GABRIELLA KILLET and MISSY WILKINSON | Staff writers

A woman was killed and two others were injured after gunfire broke out Tuesday following the Morris Jeff Community School graduation on the Xavier University campus, New Orleans police said.

The bloodshed comes just two weeks after four people were injured in an eerily similar shooting outside of the commencement ceremonies for Hammond High School. That graduation was also held at a college campus: Southeastern Louisiana University.

At a news conference, NOPD Deputy Superintendent Christopher Goodly said two women began fighting in the parking lot of Xavier's convocation center after elated graduates and their loved ones spilled out of the 10 a.m. ceremony. The fight escalated, and at least one person pulled out a weapon and began firing.

At least three subjects were detained at the scene, police said, though it's not clear what their involvement may have been. A witness told WDSU-TV that the woman who was shot and later died was the grandmother of a graduate.
