Re: Society & Demographics News and Discussions
This is going to get ugly. This is including china, japan and quite a few european countries. They simply won't be able to afford a safetynet in the future with out enough youth to work and pay into it. We could also see a massive slow down in tech and science advancement. A.i does help to dent the slow down but that probably won't completely deny the reality.
Re: Society & Demographics News and Discussions
A form of livable UBI or common dividend will solve this.
To know is essentially the same as not knowing. The only thing that occurs is the rearrangement of atoms in your brain.

+AGI automation
Re: Society & Demographics News and Discussions
Let's hope so, but it's far from a certainty - and even if it does happen, there's a question of when, and a LOT of human suffering could occur depending on the answer to that one.
I'm for UBI, but people act like UBI is a certainty despite so much government and corporate (and even some public) resistance to the idea and active investment spent against it.

Sadly the path of least resistance for many is just "ban AI." That's the concern

Re: Society & Demographics News and Discussions
This will drive many people towards Farage/Reform.
Not me (of course). However, the increase here is pretty shocking. Our country is already overloaded – we'll need massive amounts of new housing, hospitals, schools, transport upgrades, etc... things we just don't have the money for right now.
More immigration = great.
More immigration without enough capacity to meet demand = not great. Especially house prices!
So I'm pretty sure I'll always be a Lefty, but we can't just carry on like this without some major reform of the immigration process and/or substantially expanded housing, public services, etc...

UK population to soar to 72.5 million by 2032 due to net migration rise, ONS says
29 January 2025
The UK population is set to soar by nearly 5 million over the course of a decade, almost entirely because of net migration, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The population is projected to reach 72.5 million by mid-2032, up from 67.6 million in mid-2022, piling more pressure on the government to curb the number of people coming to the UK.
The figures also project that the number of over-85s will double to 3.3 million over the next two decades, with campaigners warning that the social care sector is “nowhere near ready” for the demands such an increase will put on the system.
It comes amid ongoing concern about the public finances, with further spending cuts expected to be on the way as rises in borrowing costs threaten chancellor Rachel Reeves’s economic plans.
Responding to the projected population growth, the Tories called for a binding legal cap on the number of visas issued each year, with shadow home secretary Chris Philp saying that the “shocking and unacceptable projection can and must be stopped from materialising”.

UK men and women can expect to live longer, data show
2 hours ago
Boys born in the UK in 2023 can expect to live on average to the age of 86.7, and girls to 90, latest data suggest, external.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) says figures show a continued trend of longer life expectancy for men and women.
The survival gap between the sexes is narrowing, partly down to men leading healthier lifestyles, experts say.
Projections suggest more than one in 10 boys and one in six girls born in 2023 will live to at least 100 years old.
[...]
Men aged 65 years in the UK in 2023 can expect to live, on average, a further 19.8 years. For women who were 65 in 2023, the figure is 22.5 more years of life.

UK death rate 'reaches record low'
The UK death rate reached a record low last year, according to exclusive analysis carried out for BBC News.
Mortality experts looked at death certificates registered in 2024 and found that deaths per head of the population had returned to pre-pandemic levels and were slightly below the previous record in 2019.
However, the new figure puts the UK back on its long-term trend of only gradual improvement.
The research was carried out by analysts from the Continuous Mortality Investigation (CMI) at the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.

Over 50% of adults worldwide predicted to be obese or overweight by 2050
7 hours ago
More than half of all adults and a third of children, teenagers and young adults around the world are predicted to be overweight or obese by 2050.
The findings come in a new study of global data published in The Lancet, external journal, covering more than 200 countries.
Researchers warn that obesity levels are predicted to accelerate rapidly during the remainder of this decade, particularly in lower-income countries.
However, experts say that if governments take urgent action now, there is still time to prevent what they describe as a "profound tragedy".
[...]
If trends continue, global rates of overweight and obese adults would rise to about 57.4% for men and 60.3% for women by 2050.

This prediction will almost certainly end up wrong thanks to weight loss drugs becoming much cheaper before 2050.wjfox wrote: ↑Tue Mar 04, 2025 8:37 am Over 50% of adults worldwide predicted to be obese or overweight by 2050

Let's hope. Also worth noting that fitness levels are a better indicator of health (though of course, there's a negative correlation between weight and fitness)
