Quidditch changes its name to Quadball after J.K. Rowling's alleged anti-trans comments
Updated: 21/07/2022 - 17:12

The real life sport of Quidditch, inspired by the fictional broomstick game featured in the Harry Potter franchise, has officially changed its name to Quadball.

There are two many reasons why the main governing bodies of the sport have decided to change its name.

Firstly, the name Quidditch is trademarked by Warner Bros., which limits the sport's broadcast and sponsorship opportunities.

Major League Quadball, previously known as Major League Quidditch, have said that changing the name "opens unprecedented opportunities for growth, exposure and partnerships".

Secondly, the International Quidditch Association, has cited J.K. Rowling’s “anti-trans positions” as a reason for the change.

At Least 25 States Are One Supreme Court Decision Away From Banning Same-Sex Marriage
by Arianna Coghill
July 23, 2022

Introduction:
(Mother Jones) In his decision to help gut Roe v. Wade, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote that the Supreme Court “should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell”—cases that enshrined Americans’ right to contraception, to intimate same-sex relationships, and to marriage equality. In the past week, Democrats have raced to codify same-sex marriage, culminating in Tuesday’s passage of the Respect for Marriage Act in the House.

Now, the bill rests in the hands of the Senate, where it’s not yet clear if enough Republicans will support the bill and help it avoid a 60-vote filibuster. What would happen if it doesn’t pass? Currently, there are at least 32 states—Arizona, Louisiana, and Ohio among them—that have either constitutional amendments, state laws, or both that prohibit same-sex marriage. The Obergefell v. Hodges ruling rendered these defunct in 2015, but if the Supreme Court were to overturn that decision, same-sex marriage would be instantly banned in at least 25 of those states—putting thousands of couples at risk.

Marriages, of course, are more than just white cakes and wedding rings. Everything from child custody to property rights can depend on whether a couple is married. In fact, a 2004 study from the US Government Accountability Office found that there are 1,138 statutes and provisions where marriage status is a factor in receiving benefits, rights, or privileges. Before the legalization of same-sex marriage, gay couples often would face discrimination and have their rights denied by various legal bodies.

“From taxes to Social Security benefits to retirement benefits,” said Mary Bauer, the executive director of the Virginia ACLU. “(There are) all sorts of things that are built into our kind of structure of laws and systems. Spouses have a legal privilege that is incredibly important in many practical and moral ways. We’ve heard all sorts of all sorts of stories about families that are treated as though they are not families.”

Social Media’s Role in Amplifying Dangerous Lies About LGBTQ+ People
August 10, 2022

Introduction:
(Center for Countering Digital Hate - CCDH) Twitter and Facebook are enabling digital hate against LGBTQ+ communities. A new report by CCDH and the Human Rights Campaign shows both platforms are failing to enforce Community Standards amid a spike in online Anti-LGBTQ+ hate triggered by Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay or Trans’ Bill.

CCDH researchers analyzed discourse and hateful rhetoric targeting LGBTQ+ people on Twitter and Facebook, finding an alarming and intense increase in recent months. This wave of hate has centered around the false and baseless lie that LGBTQ+ people ‘groom’ children. This, we know, has driven offline hate crimes.

We identified 989,547 tweets posted between January 1st and July 27th that mention the LGBTQ+ community alongside slurs such as “groomer”, “predator” and “pedophile”. An audit found that Twitter failed to act on 99% of the 100 hateful tweets reported to them anonymously by CCDH researchers.

Meta (Facebook) is profiting from ads promoting rhetoric that the LGBTQ+ community and its allies are ‘grooming’ children. CCDH identified at least 59 ads promoting this rhetoric – which have been served to users over 2.1 million times.

Online hate and lies reflect and reinforce offline violence and hate. Twitter and Meta (Facebook) must take action on anti-LGBTQ+ hate and stop hosting and profiting from these hateful slurs.

Fourth Circuit first to rule gender dysphoria a protected disability

By Rachel Weiner
August 17, 2022 at 6:00 a.m. EDT
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit has become the first appellate court in the country to find that gender dysphoria is covered by the Americans With Disabilities Act, after a transgender woman sued Fairfax County for housing her with men during her time in jail.

“Being transgender is not a disability,” the court wrote in an opinion issued Tuesday, but “many transgender people experience gender dysphoria,” or distress over the discrepancy between their identity and their assigned sex. “A transgender person’s medical needs are just as deserving of treatment and protection as anyone else’s.”

The decision in the case of Kesha Williams comes amid a wave of legislation across the country limiting transgender youths from accessing medical treatment, discussing sex and gender in school, or playing sports and using bathrooms that match their identity.

{snip}

The case now goes back to District Court Judge Claude M. Hilton of the Eastern District of Virginia, who had ruled the lawsuit couldn’t move forward.

Singapore will decriminalize sex between men, prime minister says
August 21, 2022

SINGAPORE, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Singapore will decriminalise sex between men but has no plans to change the legal definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Sunday.

Lee said Singaporean society, especially young people in the city-state, are becoming more accepting of gay people.

"I believe this is the right thing to do, and something that most Singaporeans will now accept," he said in his annual national day rally speech, adding that the government would repeal Section 377A of the penal code, a colonial-era law that criminalises sex between men.

It was unclear when exactly the law would be repealed.

Singapore becomes the latest Asian country to move closer to ending discrimination against members of the LGBTQ community.

Vietnam Says Homosexuality ‘Not a Disease’ in Win for Gay Rights
by Govi Snell
August 22, 2022

Introduction:
(Al Jazeera) Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam – Phong Vuong was preparing for the launch of a campaign advocating for the legalisation of gay marriage when he heard that the government had decided that homosexuality was “not a disease”.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Health also announced that it was outlawing conversion therapy.

“This announcement that being LGBT is not a disease and condemning the practice of conversion therapy, this is like a dream,” Vuong, the LGBTI rights program manager at The Institute for Studies of Society, Economy, and Environment (iSEE), told Al Jazeera.

“It is something that we never thought would have happened, let alone coming from the most trusted source for medical information in Vietnam … I think the impact on queer youth will be very, very evident.”

The health ministry’s August 3 dispatch is being celebrated for its protection of queer Vietnamese in medical settings and as fuel for an ongoing petition for the legalisation of same-sex marriage. Still, it is unclear how the decision will be enforced with many LGBTQ people still threatened with conversion therapy and often facing harsh treatment from family.

Oklahoma GOP Candidate Once Commented that it is 'Totally in the Right' to Execute Gay People by Sky Palma
August 22, 2022

Introduction:
(Alternet) A GOP candidate in Oklahoma's Republican primary runoff election tomorrow (August 23rd) is facing backlash after comments he made several years ago have emerged, LGBT Nation reports.

Scott Esk, 56, who is running for a seat in the state's House, commented on a Facebook post back in 2013 where he quoted a bible verse and later added that "we would be totally in the right" to execute gay people.

"Ignoring as a nation things that are worthy of death is very remiss," he wrote.

When a journalist asked him a year later about his comments, he replied that it's “totally just” to kill gay people.

“What I will tell you right now is that that was done in the Old Testament under a law that came directly from God,” he said at the time. “And in that time, there was, it was, totally just came directly from God.”

Panel Refuses to Reinstate Arkansas Ban on Transgender Medical Treatment for Minors
by Joe Harris
August 25, 2022

Introduction:
ST. LOUIS (Courthouse News) — A three-judge panel of the Eighth Circuit on Thursday unanimously upheld a federal judge’s injunction against an Arkansas law banning transgender medical treatment for minors.

“In sum, having reviewed the evidence as a whole, we are not left with the ‘definite and firm conviction’ that the district court’s factual findings are clearly erroneous,” U.S. Circuit Judge Jane Kelly, a Barack Obama appointee, wrote in the St. Louis-based appeals court's 11-page opinion. “Rather, substantial evidence in the record supports its factual findings.”

Amanda Priest, a spokesperson for Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, a Republican, said her office will appeal.

“The Attorney General is extremely disappointed in today’s dangerously wrong decision by the three-judge panel and plans to seek review by the full Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals,” Priest said in a statement.

At issue is House Bill 1570, which prohibits health care professionals from providing or referring minors for gender-affirming care and bars state funds or insurance from covering transgender health services to minors. If it takes effect, the law would also allow private insurers to refuse to cover transgender-related health services for people of any age.

New Delhi: "Familial relationships may take the form of domestic, unmarried partnerships or queer relationships", the Supreme Court has observed, while noting that an ''atypical" manifestation of a family unit is as real as its traditional counterpart and deserves protection under the law.
