The giant dick crashed!

Bezos rocket crashes after liftoff, only experiments aboard
Source: ABC News
A rocket crashed back to Earth shortly after liftoff Monday in the first launch accident for Jeff Bezos’ space travel company, but the capsule carrying experiments managed to parachute to safety.

No one was aboard the Blue Origin flight, which used the same kind of rocket as the one that sends paying customers to the edge of space. The rockets are now grounded pending the outcome of an investigation, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The New Shepard rocket was barely a minute into its flight from West Texas when bright yellow flames shot out from around the single engine at the bottom. The capsule’s emergency launch abort system immediately kicked in, lifting the craft off the top. Several minutes later, the capsule parachuted onto the remote desert floor.

The rocket came crashing down, with no injuries or damage reported, said the FAA, which is in charge of public safety during commercial space launches and landings.

Blue Origin hopes to resume space flights 'soon' after 2022 accident
https://phys.org/news/2023-03-blue-resu ... ident.html

Blue Origin's capsule is seen firing emergency thrusters to separate from its booster during an emergency maneuver in September 2022 in a screen grab from a handout video from the company.

Jeff Bezos' space company Blue Origin said Friday it hopes to resume rocket flights "soon" following the conclusion of an investigation into a crash last year—but it must wait for US regulators to accept the findings.

The company's New Shepard suborbital rockets, which are intended for space tourism among other purposes, have been grounded following the September 2022 accident that occurred shortly after liftoff from Texas.

The incident marked a setback for the Amazon founder's company, though observers were encouraged by the fact that had people been aboard, they would have likely survived.

The flight's rocket consisted of a single booster, with Blue Origin's NS-23 capsule on top carrying a scientific payload.

During the mission, an anomaly occurred as the rocket was climbing, appearing to stall as it experienced a technical issue.

We just did a hotfire of the BE-3U today, but the BE-4 is an absolute monster. I unfortunately haven't had the chance to witness a hotfire of it but some colleagues were at the minimum safe distance during one and told me it rattled their bones.

Blue Origin successfully launches New Shepard rocket - Reuters

Blue Origin's suborbital New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in its first mission since a failure last year led to a 15-month grounding.
====================
WASHINGTON, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Blue Origin's suborbital New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas on Tuesday carrying research payloads, a company live stream showed, in its first mission since a failure last year led to a 15-month grounding.

New Shepard, the company's only active rocket that can carry humans and cargo on short trips to and from the brim of space, lifted off from Blue Origin's remote Van Horn, Texas launch site at 10:42 a.m. CT (1642 GMT).

It soared to space for a few minutes 66 miles (106 km) above ground before its reusable rocket booster returned back to land in tact, completing its ninth trip to space.

At peak altitude, the booster deployed 33 research experiments encapsulated in a gumdrop-shaped pod, which also softly returned to land under parachutes minutes later.

NASA: Blue Origin Space Station Passes Life Support Testing Milestone
This moves the commercial space station project one step closer to reality.
By Ryan Whitwam March 22, 2024
https://www.extremetech.com/science/nas ... -milestone
Blue Origin is one of several firms working with NASA to design commercial space stations that could one day take over from the aging International Space Station (ISS). After some reports of internal strife around the project, there's some good news for the project. Blue Origin's Orbital Reef concept has passed a major milestone. NASA says Blue Origin has successfully tested the life support system that will keep astronauts and space tourists alive while on the station. As you can imagine, NASA considers that to be pretty important.

NASA draws parallels between the new Orbital Reef system and the one operating on the International Space Station. Like the ISS, Orbital Reef's critical life support system will clean the air and water, ensuring astronauts have potable water and breathable air. The regenerative system needs to be able to reclaim almost all the air and water from human activities to reduce the mass that resupply missions need to deliver.
