A company to keep an eye on. :)

Perhaps a near-future competitor to SpaceX?

Relativity Space soars to stellar valuation with new funding

Tuesday 25 May 2021 21:47, UK

One of the world's leading space industry companies is close to landing a new funding injection that will see its valuation soar to well over £2bn.

Sky News has learnt that Relativity Space, which uses giant 3D printing machines to build orbital rockets, is in advanced talks with investors about raising roughly $600m (£424m).

Sources in the US technology industry said the funding round could be concluded as soon as this week, although they cautioned that the timing of any announcement was uncertain.

Relativity Space is fast-becoming one of the leading space 'unicorns' as investors rush to back companies focused on commercialising travel beyond Earth.

The company says it is "well on its way to launching the world's first entirely 3D printed rocket to orbit, only the first step in a long-term vision to upgrade humanity's industrial base on Earth and build one on Mars".

First commercial payload to Mars could launch in 2024

26th July 2022

A new company, led by a SpaceX founding member, aims to deliver the first commercial payload to the surface of Mars – using a fully reusable, entirely 3D printed launch vehicle, the Terran R.

[...]

To date, Relativity Space has signed a total of five customers for the Terran R, totalling more than $1.2 billion in backlog, including a multi-year, multi-launch Launch Services Agreement (LSA) with OneWeb announced last month. Now emerging as a competitor to SpaceX, its collaboration with Impulse Space could actually beat Elon Musk's famous company in the race to send the first private mission to Mars, despite having a valuation 30 times smaller.

Terran-1: 3D-printed rocket lifts off but fails to reach orbit

An almost fully 3D-printed rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral on Wednesday evening, but ultimately failed to reach orbit.

Despite this, the Terran-1 passed key objectives and showed the resilience of its model, according to the company behind the project.
