Rapidly declining costs of batteries and fuel cells could soon facilitate the electrification of heavy-duty vehicles
https://techxplore.com/news/2024-06-rap ... cells.html
by Ingrid Fadelli , Tech Xplore
The electrification of road vehicles has already begun, with most automotive companies now investing in hybrid and electric cars. While these efforts could contribute to reducing carbon emissions worldwide, they have so far been primarily focused on cars, rather than trucks and heavy-duty vehicles for transporting goods.

The primary reason for this is that electrifying larger and heavier vehicles is technically challenging, as powering them for long periods of time would require more expensive and sophisticated battery technologies. Studies exploring the potential future of zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles have so far been relatively scarce, also due to the lack of available data related to the costs of fuel cells and truck batteries.

Researchers at Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) recently set out to fil this gap in the literature, by forecasting changes in the cost of truck batteries and fuel cells over the next decades. Their analyses, outlined in a paper published in Nature Energy, suggest that the costs of both truck batteries and fuel cells could decline over the next few years, facilitating the electrification of heavy-duty vehicles.

"Discrepancies exist regarding current cost levels of fuel cells and batteries for decarbonizing road transport, as well as the pace and extent of achievable cost reductions," Steffen Link, lead author of the paper, told Tech Xplore. "Our findings emphasize that zero-emission truck costs are primed to decline much faster than expected in previous studies, with cost-effective operations appearing feasible today. Given the short ownership times of heavy commercial trucks (typically 3-6 years), market diffusion will happen substantially quicker than for private passenger cars."

As part of their study, the researchers collectively analyzed data derived from over 200 sources published between 2010 and 2023, including peer-reviewed papers, industry announcements and analyst reports. Using various statistical methods, including normal and robust regression techniques, they derived possible cost projections for truck batteries and fuel cells, and then validated the robustness of their forecasts.

Here's a better article by NBC Montana.

At least it's still under half. Regardless, Joe's charger plan had better be implemented fast.

World's first ultra-large battery dump truck goes to work in copper mine
By Paul Ridden
June 27, 2024
Hitachi reports that the "world's first ultra-large full battery dump truck" is being put to work at an open-pit copper/gold mine in Zambia. The prototype will undergo validation testing under operating loads to verify basic performance of the vehicle itself, and the support infrastructure.

Mining is a dirty business, but we have seen a number of efforts aimed at cleaning up its act – at least as far as the heavy machinery is concerned. Previous attempts to curb emissions during mining operations have come from the likes of GM, Fortescue, Caterpillar and Anglo American.

Hitachi Construction Machinery began its project in 2021, joining forces with tech titan ABB "to explore opportunities for mine operators to target net-zero emissions from mining machine." Development of a battery electric dump truck kicked off in June of that year.

Lucid Motors Sets New Record for EV Deliveries at it Seeks “Escape Velocity.”
by Sean O’Kane
July 8, 2024

Introduction:
(Techcrunch) Lucid Motors delivered 2,394 EVs in the second quarter of 2024, a new record for the company and a positive sign amid its struggle to establish a foothold in the still-growing market for electric vehicles.

That number easily clears Lucid’s prior record, which it set in the first quarter of the year when it shipped 1,967 of its luxury sedans. The Saudi-backed, California-based company has been looking to expand the number of buyers for its Lucid Air sedan by slashing prices and offering more affordable trims.

The starting price of Lucid’s different versions of the Air have hovered close to — or exceeded — $100,000 since the company started shipping the sedan in 2021. But recent cuts have moved those prices down significantly, with the base model now starting at $69,900.

“For the first time, I feel we’re on the cusp of escape velocity. We have sales momentum, a compounding efficiency advantage, [and] unprecedented interest from consumers and corporate partners,” CEO Peter Rawlinson said in May when discussing Lucid’s first-quarter financial results.

These efforts have come as Lucid is looking to start building its Gravity SUV by the end of this year, a model the company says it expects will catch even more buyers in the U.S. market. The company announced the second-quarter delivery figures in a Monday morning press release, adding that it also built 2,110 in the same period.
In the remaining article, brief mention is made of sales trends for rivals Telsa and Rivian

Megawatt-plus e-truck charging achieved in public for the first time
By Paul Ridden
July 29, 2024
https://newatlas.com/automotive/nefton- ... -charging/
MAN Truck & Bus has demonstrated a megawatt charging prototype developed by the Technical University of Munich that pushed out more than 1,000 kilowatts. The 40-tonne eTruck received enough charge in 30 minutes for almost 250 miles of hauling.

Around 70-80% of freight in Germany is reported to be transported by road, with the majority of that hauled by diesel trucks. Switching to battery electric trucking would certainly put a dent in the estimated 148 million tons of CO2 belched out by the industry each year as a result, but operators obviously don't want e-trucks sitting around for long periods charging.

"The scientific facts send a clear message: Battery-powered trucks have an efficiency of around 75%," said Professor Markus Lienkamp at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). "This puts them far ahead of trucks powered by fuel cells with a 26% efficiency and eFuels with a 14% efficiency. However, the necessary infrastructure for the effective use of electric trucks is still lacking along the main transport routes. The technology for megawatt charging represents an enormous step forward."
