Toyota Claims Solid-State Battery Has 745 Mile Range, 10 Minute Charging Time

Published

Hyperbole alert: The following news will evoke all the hackneyed words and phrases that so often are used to talk about new battery technology. Prepare for a flurry of “game changer,” “holy grail,” and “This changes everything” statements. Yet if the news today from Toyota is true — emphasis on if — the path of the EV revolution is about to be altered forever. The fact that it comes from Toyota, a company we have been lambasting for years because of its refusal to take electric cars seriously, makes this news all the more surprising.

Last month, Toyota announced it has a new electric car strategy. Around the CleanTechnica latte bar, the general consensus is that it’s about damn time.
“The next-generation battery EVs will adopt new batteries, through which we are determined to become a world leader in battery EV energy consumption. With the resources we earn, we will improve our product appeal to exceed customer expectations and secure earnings. We will roll out next-generation BEVs globally and as a full lineup to be launched in 2026. By 2030, 1.7 million units out of 3.5 million overall will be provided by BEV Factory. Please look forward to a carmaker-produced battery EV that inspires the hearts of all customers.”
Now just a few weeks later, Toyota is telling the world it has made a technological breakthrough that will allow it to cut the weight, size, and cost of batteries in half. Think for a minute. If true, what might the implications be for the EV revolution? And no, you are not allowed to include the words “game changer” in your response.

On July 3, the company said it had simplified the production of the material used to make solid-state batteries and hailed the discovery as a significant leap forward that could dramatically cut charging times and increase driving range. “For both our liquid and our solid-state batteries, we are aiming to drastically change the situation where current batteries are too big, heavy and expensive. In terms of potential, we will aim to halve all of these factors.”said Keiji Kaita, president of the Toyota research and development center for carbon neutrality.

Tesla's 1st electric pickup has rolled off the assembly line, company says
Source: AP

Published 12:24 PM CDT, July 15, 2023

Tesla says its first production Cybertruck electric pickup has rolled off the assembly line, nearly two years behind the original schedule.

The company tweeted a photo on Saturday showing scores of workers in helmets and yellow vests surrounding the truck.

“First Cybertruck built at Giga Texas!” Tesla tweeted, including a cowboy hat-wearing emoji. Owner Elon Musk retweeted the post.

Musk unveiled the truck in late 2019, and Tesla had said production would start in late 2021, although the company has since cautioned that production would begin slowly and in smaller numbers than Tesla’s other vehicles.

Ecojet airline aims to fly hydrogen-electric aircraft from 2025
By Paul Ridden
July 17, 2023
Green-energy businessman Dale Vince has revealed plans to set up the UK's first electric aviation company. Ecojet will repurpose conventional aircraft to fly on hydrogen-electric power, with domestic flights planned to start as early as 2025.

Norfolk-born Dale Vince – founder and owner of renewables-based energy company Ecotricity – has partnered with an experienced pilot named Brent Smith to set up Ecojet, along with a number of aviation specialists.

The company intends to get the airline operating as soon as possible, so its first flights between Southampton and Edinburgh next year will use unmodified aircraft that run on a kerosene-based fuel, while approval for the hydrogen-electric powertains is sought from the Civil Aviation Authority.

"It does feel like a contradiction but at the heart of this project is upcycling existing planes and retrofitting them," Vince told The Guardian. "This is the pragmatic approach, which means we won’t lose time. We will build up the infrastructure, get the planes in the air and swap in the engines when they are available."

Document Shows Nio ES6 With 577-Mile Range, 150-kWh Solid-State Battery

Jul 10, 2023 at 3:15pm ET

Updated user manuals released by Nio include a new 150-kilowatt-hour semi-solid state battery pack alongside the existing battery types. The solid-state batteries will be available on the Nio ES6 in China starting in July, as per Nio CEO William Li.

In solid-state batteries, solid electrolytes – the charge-carrying components between the two electrodes – are used instead of liquid or polymer gel electrolytes in current lithium-ion or lithium polymer batteries.

Several companies have announced investments in solid-state battery technology for its advantages over lithium-ion batteries – they’re considered more energy dense and faster charging while using the same physical space.

The document reveals that Nio’s new 150 kWh battery, supplied by Beijing WeLion Energy Technology, tips scales at 575 kilograms, 20 kg heavier than CATL’s 100 kWh packs widely available on Nio models. But it offers an energy density of 261 watt-hours per kilogram, 44.44 percent higher than CATL’s unit with 180 Wh/kg.

Global economy doubles in product every 15-20 years. Computer performance at a constant price doubles nowadays every 4 years on average. Livestock-as-food will globally stop being a thing by ~2050 (precision fermentation and more). Human stupidity, pride and depravity are the biggest problems of our world.
