Rivian Receives 68,000 Reservations for R2 Electric SUV in 24 Hours
The upcoming EV starts at a reasonable $45,000.

Electric vehicle startup Rivain made some waves with its first two releases, the R1T pickup truck and the R1S SUV. However, the just-unveiled R2 might be the company's first real hit. Since announcing the compact R2 SUV, Rivain says it has secured more than 68,000 reservations. Rivian is optimistic, but it could be a few years before any buyers get behind the wheel.

Rivian revealed the R2 on Thursday (March 7) alongside the even more compact R3 and R3X. The R2 might be the sweet spot, though. It's a five-seat SUV, and the body measurements are within an inch or two of the Toyota Rav4 and Honda CR-V, the most popular compact SUVs on the market. It's a touch larger than the Tesla Model Y and substantially smaller than the chunky Model X. The R2 will come in single, dual, and tri-motor variants, with the cheapest models starting at $45,000. That's getting awfully close to the price of traditional gas-powered SUVs and crossovers.

Rivian hasn't clarified the final pricing on all variants, but we can take some cues from the vehicles it sells. The R1S and R1T are much more expensive, starting at $70,000 and $74,000, respectively. Stepping up from the base dual-motor design to the performance version is $5,000 extra, and the quad-motor is $8,000. So, you can probably expect closer to $50,000 for the dual-motor R2 and a few thousand on top for the tri-motor.

China technology giant Xiaomi starts electric car sales
1 day ago

Chinese technology giant Xiaomi says it will start deliveries of its first electric vehicle (EV) this month - its first ever foray into the competitive automotive industry.

The car's price is expected to be announced on 28 March.

China's fifth-largest smartphone maker says it has 59 stores in 29 cities around the country to take orders.

It comes as a price war intensifies between firms like BYD and Tesla in China, the world's biggest car market.

At the unveiling of the Speed Ultra 7 (SU7) last year, Xiaomi's chief executive Lei Jun said the company aims to become one of the top five car makers in the world.

BYD says plug-in electrics will exceed 50 pct of new car sales in China in next 3 months

March 19, 2024

The CEO of BYD, the Chinese giant challenging Tesla as the world’s biggest electric vehicle maker, says sales of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), including battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), will make up more than half of all new cars sold in China within the next three months.

“The penetration rate of NEVs crossed 48.2 per cent last week, and if it continues at this rate, I estimate that the penetration could cross 50 percent in the next three months,” Wang Chuanfu said in a recent speech at the China EV 100 Forum in Beijing.

According to CnEVPost, Wang forecast that China would cross the 50% threshold sometime this year but has now brought forward his prediction saying it will likely happen during the next 90 days.

Around 9.5 million NEVs were sold in China in 2023 making up 31% of the world’s largest car market. Of these 6.7 million were fully electric BEVs and 2.8 million were PHEVs meaning BEVs make up around 70% of all NEVs.
