Skyscrapers & High-Rise Architecture

Post by Yuli Ban »

A thread for supertall skyscrapers, starscrapers, supertall structures, and high rises? Why not!
Specifically, why not start with a story about work on a supertall structure being halted?

“We don’t build anymore”: Emaar confirms suspension of new construction in Dubai
Emaar Properties, the largest listed developer in Dubai, has halted new-build projects owing to an oversupply of properties and a fall in demand caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Bloomberg reports that Mohamed Alabbar, the company’s chairman, told a UAE-Israel business conference in Dubai on Monday: “We don’t build anymore. The government entities decided to stop new developments almost a year back, but Covid definitely put the brakes on.”

The statement follows reports earlier this year that the company had halted work on a number of major projects in the emirate.

Bloomberg notes that Emaar has resisted calls in recent years to stop construction in order to prevent a glut of supply, despite a 30% fall in house prices since 2014.

Most of the emirate’s other major developers, such as Damac Properties, Meraas Holding and Nakheel, have cut back their development plans in an attempt to maintain price levels.

Alabbar, who was speaking at the Future Digital Economy Summit, added that real estate was a cyclical business, and he was seeing a rise in demand. He said: “We have an oversupply, but Dubai is reasonably priced … good demand continues from India, Saudi Arabia, Russia and China.”

Emaar was selling about $15m of property a day before the pandemic. After a crash in sales, it has now recovered to $12m a day, according to Alabbar.
And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future

San Francisco luxury tower still sinking even as engineers work on $100m fix

Thu 26 Aug 2021 21.33 BST

San Francisco’s notorious sinking luxury high-rise is still sinking, even amid a $100m project designed to fix the issue.

Work to reinforce the foundation of Millennium tower in the city’s downtown came to a halt this week, after engineers found the building had sunk an inch in the months since work began. Engineers were working on reinforcing the foundation of the tower to prevent additional tilting and sinking.

The 58-story tower, the tallest residential building in San Francisco, has drawn joking comparisons to the Leaning Tower of Pisa because, by 2014, it had sunk 18in and was leaning 14in to the west. The high-rise opened to fanfare five years earlier, with all 419 units quickly selling out and had high-profile residents such as the former San Francisco 49ers player Joe Montana, and the Giants outfielder Hunter Pence.

[...]

In May, crews started work on the perimeter pile upgrade project to install 52 concrete, 140,000lb piles to anchor the building to bedrock 250ft below ground. Shortly after work began, however, the sinking and tilting accelerated; the building now has a tilt of 22 inches, NBC Bay Area reported.
