Skyscrapers & High-Rise Architecture

Post by Yuli Ban »

A thread for supertall skyscrapers, starscrapers, supertall structures, and high rises? Why not!
Specifically, why not start with a story about work on a supertall structure being halted?

“We don’t build anymore”: Emaar confirms suspension of new construction in Dubai
Emaar Properties, the largest listed developer in Dubai, has halted new-build projects owing to an oversupply of properties and a fall in demand caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Bloomberg reports that Mohamed Alabbar, the company’s chairman, told a UAE-Israel business conference in Dubai on Monday: “We don’t build anymore. The government entities decided to stop new developments almost a year back, but Covid definitely put the brakes on.”

The statement follows reports earlier this year that the company had halted work on a number of major projects in the emirate.

Bloomberg notes that Emaar has resisted calls in recent years to stop construction in order to prevent a glut of supply, despite a 30% fall in house prices since 2014.

Most of the emirate’s other major developers, such as Damac Properties, Meraas Holding and Nakheel, have cut back their development plans in an attempt to maintain price levels.

Alabbar, who was speaking at the Future Digital Economy Summit, added that real estate was a cyclical business, and he was seeing a rise in demand. He said: “We have an oversupply, but Dubai is reasonably priced … good demand continues from India, Saudi Arabia, Russia and China.”

Emaar was selling about $15m of property a day before the pandemic. After a crash in sales, it has now recovered to $12m a day, according to Alabbar.
And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future

San Francisco luxury tower still sinking even as engineers work on $100m fix

Thu 26 Aug 2021 21.33 BST

San Francisco’s notorious sinking luxury high-rise is still sinking, even amid a $100m project designed to fix the issue.

Work to reinforce the foundation of Millennium tower in the city’s downtown came to a halt this week, after engineers found the building had sunk an inch in the months since work began. Engineers were working on reinforcing the foundation of the tower to prevent additional tilting and sinking.

The 58-story tower, the tallest residential building in San Francisco, has drawn joking comparisons to the Leaning Tower of Pisa because, by 2014, it had sunk 18in and was leaning 14in to the west. The high-rise opened to fanfare five years earlier, with all 419 units quickly selling out and had high-profile residents such as the former San Francisco 49ers player Joe Montana, and the Giants outfielder Hunter Pence.

[...]

In May, crews started work on the perimeter pile upgrade project to install 52 concrete, 140,000lb piles to anchor the building to bedrock 250ft below ground. Shortly after work began, however, the sinking and tilting accelerated; the building now has a tilt of 22 inches, NBC Bay Area reported.

China limits construction of 'super high-rise buildings'

China has restricted smaller cities in the country from building "super high-rise buildings", as part of a larger bid to crackdown on vanity projects.

Cities with populations of less than three million people will be restricted from building skyscrapers taller than 150 metres (492 ft).

Those with populations larger than that will be restricted from buildings taller than 250 metres.

There is already an existing ban on buildings taller than 500 metres.

China is home to some of the world's highest buildings - including the 632m Shanghai Tower and the 599.1m Ping An Finance Centre in Shenzhen.

Local reports say that while skyscrapers may be needed in crowded cities like Shanghai and Shenzhen, there is no shortage of land in other cities, adding that those had been built mostly for vanity reasons.

Too bad. I like large skyscrapers. Even if they don't make much sense apart from vanity. They are also tourist attractions.

Burj Khalifa doesn't even have its own wastewater sewage system yet (under construction), but it's an unforgettable place to visit. I know people who were there and they wouldn't prefer something more mundane, economical and ecological instead. Would you prefer an eight storey rectangular modernist hotel or residential building on its place?

However, I like the idea of making better, modernized versions of old traditional architecture. It's also interesting to tourists. Why not use old heritage, but in a new, more advanced, more clever way? Instead of glass, steel and concrete buildings.
Global economy doubles in product every 15-20 years. Computer performance at a constant price doubles nowadays every 4 years on average. Livestock-as-food will globally stop being a thing by ~2050 (precision fermentation and more). Human stupidity, pride and depravity are the biggest problems of our world.

Here's a quick video from the coastal skyline in a nearby city here in Brazil. I was really impressed by the buildings and decided to film it a bit. I've tried to embed it but it seems odysse is not yet supported by phpBB.

And, as always, bye bye.

City’s Tulip tower plans quashed by government

Thursday November 11, 2021 12:23 pm

Plans to build a 305-metre tower in the heart of the City have been quashed by the government.

The proposed Tulip tower, named after its distinctive thin base and bulbed dome resembling the eponymous flower, was set to be built at 20 Bury Street, adjacent to The Gherkin.

Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Levelling Up, has "decided to dismiss the appeal and refuse planning permission", according to a decision document released 11 November.

[...]

Of particular concern was the potential to obscure views of the Tower of London, potentially putting its World Heritage status at risk.

"The chosen purpose, form, materials and location have resulted in a design that would cause considerable harm to the significance of the [Tower of London], and further harm to other designated heritage assets," the decision reads. "It would do so for the gains that a new visitor attraction would provide to the economy, tourism and education which are relatively modest by comparison with the City as a whole and with other nearby provisions."
