What do the time lines say about sending people to moon or Mars?
What do the time lines say about sending people to moon or Mars?
I hear lot of buzz words like sending people to the moon, moon base, moon colony and sending people to mars or bars base and mars colony so on. But no time lines are given.
I hear some thing that NASA wants to send people to moon or space X wants send people to mars by year 2030.
But what are the proper time lines? Do you think the public or private sector will send people to the moon in the next year or two? What about sending people to the mars in the next 4 or 6 years from now? Most likely is it going to be private sector not NASA going to mars?
Did Trump wanted to go to the moon not mars and cut the mars founding? That NASA wanted to do before? Is NASA really anti mars and really pro the moon now? Well space X is really pro mars?

NASA's Artemis III is currently scheduled for 2027. It will land a human crew on the lunar surface, including the first woman and person of colour.
China's timeline is somewhat less clear, but their first crewed landing on the Moon seems likely around 2030 or so.
Some sort of permanent lunar base by NASA/ESA/Japan may begin to take shape around 2035-40, with China pursuing their own version by 2040-45.
As for Mars, it's anyone's guess when that happens. I had originally predicted 2033 for a crewed mission, based on NASA's timelines back in the 2010s, which might start with a Phobos mission before Mars itself. However, I now suspect that any crewed exploration of Mars is considerably further out. Difficult to say when it happens, due to cost and technical complexities. SpaceX may attempt something independently of the big space agencies. Perhaps we should do a poll, to find out what other forum members think?

I remember NASA said 2040 for Mars.
Re: What do the time lines say about sending people to moon or Mars?
I thought Elon Musk last week updated and said he wants to send people to Mars in 2026?
What does Trump term get now?

One of the few positives of last night is Musk has Trumps ear. This probably increases his odds of going to mars earlier and with less regulation.

With all due respect, who gives a damn about Mars right now?

Ikr, but I mean that it's nothing to be excited about or happy for.

Trump is all about tax cuts to government programs even NASA.40lightyears wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 10:40 amNow that Trump is president we will hear about it a lot more then you thinkfirestar464 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2024 9:23 pm With all due respect, who gives a damn about Mars right now?
If any Moon trip or Mars trip it probably would be the private sector before NASA gets there.
Don’t know about China, India or Europe if they will get there before NASA does. But China, India and Europe wants to go to Moon and later Mars. Yes even Japan has talk about going to Moon.

I'd be shocked if it happens before 2040.
Probably china will do it. I'd also watch India.
America is fucked. And Elon has pretty much given up on it for all intent and purposes. Shame.

Private sector meanwhile:

NASA already has plans in place for a Lunar Orbit (Artemis II) and Lunar Lander (Artemis III). If things go well, Mars plans are expected to follow.
Looking at the timeline there.
https://www.nasa.gov/mission/artemis-ii
https://www.nasa.gov/mission/artemis-iii/
Here is a tl;dr of the likely timelines:
Lunar orbit (Artemis II)- 2025–2026
Lunar landing (Artemis III) - 2026-2028
Sustainable Moon base - 2028–2032
Mars flyby/orbit - 2032-2035
Mars surface landing - 2035–2040
Expect all of this to change rapidly after SpaceX Starship comes online and enables cheaper transport to both destinations.

That is before Trump got back into office. You can forget the fucking moon unless spacex does it with Elons money or china does it.Lilymoon wrote: ↑Mon May 26, 2025 6:51 pm NASA already has plans in place for a Lunar Orbit (Artemis II) and Lunar Lander (Artemis III). Artemis 2 and 3 are still planned, but they've suggested axing the rest.

Just like Musks promises. Hyperloop, cheap self driving cars. Always 5-10 years away but never arrives.weatheriscool wrote: ↑Mon May 26, 2025 9:58 pmThat is before Trump got back into office. Re: What do the time lines say about sending people to moon or Mars?
That was quite a ride. From ultra high speed rail, to high speed rail, to high speed road, to a dumb Tesla tunnel.
Re: What do the time lines say about sending people to moon or Mars?
Should NASA be privatize?
I mean just look at Trump what he is doing now.
If NASA is privatize would this not speed things up?

Nasa has always relied on private companies to build the launch infrastructure...Boeing. Space-x just does it better and has the balls to do what is needed!
Nasa will continue to be government and work with space-x and blue origin.

I probably suspect it will be around 2050... I'm not joking.
