When will humans first land on Mars?

Post by wjfox »

Humans have been talking about landing on Mars for generations, but in recent years the idea has started to feel more tangible. NASA's Artemis programme, China's growing ambitions in space, and rapid advances from companies like SpaceX have all added momentum, while decades of robotic missions have mapped the planet in remarkable detail.

At the same time, Mars remains an extraordinarily difficult and dangerous destination – far more so than the Moon – with long travel times, radiation and other hazards, and no possibility of a quick rescue.

So, when do you think the first crewed mission will actually happen? And which nation(s) or companies will be involved?

China between 2040-2044. They have the resources and the drive to pull it off.
Elon musk will focus on the moon. SO will china as we'll have at least a couple of bases on the moon in the next 2-3 decades, but there is no way he has the balls to go all the way to mars....Too much risk for Elon and has no skill in landing anything on the red planet unlike nasa.

Nasa won't be funded enough to pull it off and they have the tools that elon doesn't. SO America simply doesn't land humans on mars before China. There's a reason nasa just want around the moon. They simply have the skill and ability to do so for longer range missions, They've been doing it for the past 60 years! while elon sticks to low orbit and maybe the moon in the coming decades.

I am not saying it doesn't happen for America but it'll be 2050's.

I thought NASA or Elon Musk had plans going to Mars?

The AI says 2029 sending people to Mars.

Elon will focus on the moon and maybe orbital(space tourism). He will come down to reality that mars is too hard until we build up the orbital and moon economy. Mars is a dream that can only be done by getting a long term economy and mandate going in space that is closer to earth. He simply doesn't have the skill to do mars and is limited by economics being he is a company.

China has the economic power and the political system to not give a damn. They'll do both.

Because our political system is anti-science and investing in nasa we won't likely beat China to mars.

Establishing Moon bases (and perhaps datacenters?) makes more sense in the short term. That should be done firstly as the Moon is our nearest satellite and the data from those missions could greatly help a future Mars mission. My option was for 2035-2039, but it's certainly the latter point.

Given how robotics have been advancing it might make far more sense to send humanoid androids rather than people. At least at first to get the infrastructure set up and safer for any human occupants.
