How The Carrying Capacity of Planets Could be Much Increased

The carrying capacity of Earth is estimated to be between 9 to 10 billion because people live all over the Earth. However, on other planets, we could make one megacity in which the entire population of the planet would live, while the rest of the planet is filled with farms. Also,if posthumans don't need to eat food to generate enegry, the carrying capacity of planets would rise by how much of a planet's population become posthuman.

what if i don't want to live in a megacity?

That aside, yes the carrying capacity of Earth can be vastly increased. Though posthumans would likely require more energy than normal humans, they could just source it directly from the sun instead of re-routing it through plants and animals. It's not clear if this would be more efficient in absolute terms or not and likely depends on the individual.

I'll one-up you: we could increase the carrying capacity by dispensing with our bodies, putting our brains in jars, putting all the jars in a big warehouse, and connecting the jars to the Matrix. Subjectively, FIVR would seem just as real as the real world. And since our brains only use 20% of our total calories, the human population could grow by a factor of five without requiring more farmland than we do now.
