Machines will control you through persuasion in the future

Post by funkervogt »

If machines can ultimately do everything that humans can do, then it means they will be excellent debaters with encyclopedic knowledge of all facts and counterarguments, they will know how to "read" their audiences very well and to attenuate their messaging for maximum effect, and they will be able to fake emotions convincingly.
Stand aside, Siri and Alexa. An IBM team led by artificial intelligence (A.I.) researcher Noam Slonim has devised a system that does not merely answer questions; it debates the questioners.

In a contest against champion human debaters, Slonim's Project Debater, which speaks with a female voice, impressed the judges. She didn't win, but that could change.

As her developers explain in a March Nature article, Project Debater's computational argumentation technology consists of four main modules. The argument mining module accesses 400 million recent newspaper articles. The argument knowledge base deploys general debating principles. The rebuttal module matches objections to the points made by the other side. The debate construction module filters and chooses the arguments deemed most relevant and persuasive.

...An April Nature editorial, however, predicted that computational argumentation will improve. "One day," the journal suggested, such systems will be able to "create persuasive language with stronger oratorical ability and recourse to emotive appeals—both of which are known to be more effective than facts and logic in gaining attention and winning converts, especially for false claims."

We'll look back at today's tracking algorithms and target advertising bots as the primitive precursors of machine master manipulators.

Yes of course, this is how they'll eventually take over, by slowly persuading us to hand over the keys to our industries and social/political institutions one by one. Not with some skynet bs.

I agree that scenario is likelier. AIs will slowly make themselves indispensable to humans until one day, we wake up and realize they're in control of everything and we can't do anything about it.

For example, imagine a future where AI does 99% of the work (physical and mental), and all humans sit at home waiting for their UBI checks to arrive in the mail. Everyone also has a robot butler to do work for them around the house and to follow them to the mall and carry their bags. In this scenario, humans would be totally dependent upon machines for everything, humans would have no clue how to survive for even one day without a machine's help, an interruption in service would literally be a disaster, and there would always be at least one robot in close proximity to every human, all the time. You've got no place to hide, you're too fat to run, and you're too weak to fight.

Ostensibly, humans would still be in control of the world, but AIs would really be in charge.
