Ship footage captures sound of Titan sub imploding

22 May 2025

The moment that Oceangate's Titan submersible was lost has been revealed in footage recorded on the sub's support ship.

Titan imploded about 90 minutes into a descent to see the wreck of the Titanic in June 2023, killing all five people on board.

The passengers had paid Oceangate to see the ship, which lies 3,800m down.

On board were Oceangate's CEO Stockton Rush, British explorer Hamish Harding, veteran French diver Paul Henri Nargeolet, the British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son Suleman.

The BBC has had unprecedented access to the US Coast Guard's (USCG) investigation for a documentary, Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster.

The footage was recently obtained by the USCG and shows Wendy Rush, the wife of Mr Rush, hearing the sound of the implosion while watching on from the sub's support ship and asking: "What was that bang?"

Inside the Titan Sub Disaster: Forensic Discoveries, Implosion Science, and the Engineering Questions That Still Haunt the Deep
by Charles Mitchell
May 31, 2025

Introduction:
(Modern Engineering Marvels via MSN) “Each one of those pieces, even the pen, was still intact. It hadn’t been broken. All of this debris, all of these things shattered, but his pen was still intact,” The words of U.S. Coast Guard investigator Lt. Kelly Steele, featured in Discovery’s new documentary Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster, convey the dreamlike sequel to the Titan submersible disaster. Almost two years on from the devastating implosion which killed five people on a descent to the Titanic wreck, the revelations emanating from the wreckage and the inquiry still captivate and unsettle marine exploration and true-crime buffs in equal measure.

The documentary, airing May 28, does more than expose the technical and human drama of the last dive of Titan. It uncovers new evidence and haunting audio that illuminated what occurred in the final minutes. Among the most dramatic forensic finds: personal items of OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, such as a fragment of his sleeve, an ink pen, business cards, and Titanic stickers, all intact within the sand-encased fabric. The conservation of such things, contrasted with the complete devastation of the sub’s carbon fibers and electronic systems, provides a harrowing preview of the violence and selectivity of deep-sea forces of implosion.

The U.S. Coast Guard investigation, aided by sophisticated forensic techniques, used a combination of Bayesian search methods, side-scanning sonar, and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to identify and retrieve debris from over 12,000 feet beneath the Atlantic surface. These methods, commonplace in contemporary underwater forensics, proved integral in limiting the area of search and recording the condition of the wreckage. As outlined in a lengthy overview of forensic underwater techniques, Bayesian models assist in prioritizing the search areas using evidence available, while side-scan sonar produces high-resolution images of the seafloor and ROVs deliver close-up video and physical recovery.
