Thought it would be good to have a little post about what has been achieved so far with the technology and what is to come:

28 June 2012: Paper "A Programmable Dual-RNA–Guided DNA Endonuclease in Adaptive Bacterial Immunity" is published - https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1225829

3 January 2013: First use of CRISPR/CAS9 to edit human cells in a dish - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23287718/s

2016: UC Berkeley vs Broad Institute CRISPR patent row begins - https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-00629-y

2017: Courts side with Broad Institute in patent row - https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-00629-y

September 2018: Appeals court also sides with Broad institute in patent row - https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-00629-y

November 2018: He Jiankui causes international outrage after stating that he had genetically modified embryos with CRISPR and implanted them in women in an attempt to grant the children immunity from HIV - https://www.science.org/content/article ... years-jail

November 2018: World's first CRISPR genetically modified children are born - https://www.science.org/content/article ... years-jail

25 February 2019: Clinical trial of CRISPR derived treatment for sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia beings - http://www.crisprtx.com/about-us/press- ... apy-ctx001

30 December 2019: He Jiankui jailed for "illegal medical practices" for 3 years - https://www.science.org/content/article ... years-jail

07 October 2020: Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier awared the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry - https://www.statnews.com/2020/10/07/two ... chemistry/

29 June 2021: CRISPR treatment shows promise against rare fatal liver disease transthyretin amyloidosis - https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-01776-4

Predicted Upcoming Advances:

CRISPR treatments for genetic diseases, cancer, etc...
Gene trait editing on embryos

Apparently CRISPR technology is even getting taught in high school in some places now:

Quite hard to imagine, when I did biology just over 10 years ago we knew nothing about this, and now it is becoming part of standard biology curriculum.
