My God. It looked 99% certain that we were going out!

90 minutes + four minutes overtime = England 0-1 Slovakia

95th minute: Bellingham scores for England! :D

England 1-1 Slovakia

And then... Kane scores in the 1st minute of extra time!

Current score: England 2-1 Slovakia

Haven't watched footy in along time Will but closely following the Euros but it sounded like a fluke, bet they get Spain or France in the next few matches.

One Chronic Disease Is Shockingly Common Among Olympic Athletes
by Michelle Starr
July 12, 2024

Introduction:
(Science Alert) Performing at the absolute pinnacle of athletic endeavor can play havoc on the human body. When you push yourself beyond your limits, you can end up in a world of pain.

There are the injuries, of course. And for the 14,500 or so athletes – and their staff – expected to take up residence in the Olympic Village for the duration of the 2024 Paris Games, there's likely to be a few infections going around.

But one ailment is shockingly common among top-level athletes, and it's probably not one you might expect. It's estimated that upwards of 20 percent of the athletes who participated in the 1996 Summer Olympics suffer from asthma; and for the winter games, the number rises even higher.

In fact, a 2023 study found that somewhere between 15 and 30 percent of Olympic athletes have asthma. For some sports, the figure is as high as over 50 percent.

2024 Paris Olympics Updates: Results Tracker, Team USA Schedule, United States Medal Count from Summer Games
by Chris Bengel
July 28, 2024

Introduction:
(CBS) Sunday action at the 2024 Paris Olympics is already underway, with one of the top headlines being Simone Biles' return to Olympic competition, LeBron James leading Team USA against Nikola Jokic's Serbian squad and the United States meeting Germany in Women's Soccer.

The United States got off to a strong start Saturday, reaching the medal podium five times, which is tied with Australia in the overall Olympic medal count. The U.S. got on the medal board early, with two silvers awarded to synchronized divers Kassidy Cook and Sarah Bacon. Katie Ledecky, the most decorated female Olympic swimmer of all time, earned her 11th career medal by taking bronze in the 400m freestyle. Her finish came against Australian Ariarne Titmus -- who claimed gold -- adding another chapter to the storied pool rivalry between the U.S. and Australia. The Americans continued to add to their medal count in the 4x100m freestyle relays, with the women's team taking silver behind Australia and the men's team capturing gold, Team USA's first gold of the Olympics.

The Olympics will run until Aug. 11, and CBS Sports on this page will be tracking the entire event from the perspective of the United States. In this space, you will find everything you need to know about Team USA's performances from gold medal victories and record-breaking efforts to fun moments and (unfortunately some) crushing defeats.

Check out the key links below (start with the link provided) for everything you need to know about the Olympics, while the live updates further down the page will chronicle every important moment and medal opportunity from Team USA over the course of these games.

At What Age Do Olympic Track and Field Athletes Peak?
July 24, 2024

Introduction:
(Eurekalert) There’s a lot that goes into an Olympic athlete’s quest for gold – years of training and rigour – but also, an athlete’s age. A team of University of Waterloo students used statistics to figure out when an Olympic track-and-field athletes’ peak performance will be.

Track-and-field encompasses running, jumping, throwing, and combined event disciplines. Most athletes’ career performance progressions can typically be visualized as a bell curve, in which they train over several years to reach their best performance, or “peak,” at a certain age and then gradually decline.

“Unlike other Olympic sports such as soccer and tennis that have their own high-profile competitions outside of the Games, the Olympics is the largest stage upon which track-and-field athletes compete,” said David Awosoga, a master’s student in data science and the lead author on the research.

“Because the Olympics occur only once every four years, track-and-field athletes must carefully consider when and how they should train to maximize their probability of qualifying for the Olympics while at their personal peak.”
Additional Extract:
They found that the average age of participation of Olympic track-and-field athletes has remained remarkably consistent for both men and women over the past three decades: just under 27 years old. “Interestingly enough, our analysis also demonstrated that the median peak age for these athletes was 27,” Awosoga said.

Basically the same as footballers. Although I suppose you could argue that older footballers (30-35) might have better intelligence and decision-making on the pitch, due to more experience. But in terms of physical fitness and abilities overall, the peak does seem to be around 27. This could all change with longevity/rejuvenation treatments, of course. :)

How Lyles' torso decided greatest Olympics 100m final

Was this the greatest race in history?

A spectacular pre-race lightshow and dramatic music during a lengthy wait for the starting pistol at an expectant Stade de France heightened the senses.

But even those dazzling theatrics could not quite do justice to the events which unfolded in the 10 seconds that followed.

As Noah Lyles celebrated wildly, his first Olympic triumph confirmed, others were left stunned after witnessing one of the most remarkable Olympic 100m showdowns of all time.

American Lyles had taken victory by five-thousandths of a second from Jamaica's Kishane Thompson in a dramatic photo finish, winning in 9.79 seconds.

How the Olympic Track is Designed for Speed
August 5, 2024

Introduction:
(Futurity) Every millisecond matters for the athletes gathered in Paris for the Summer Olympics, and track and field athletes compete on a surface designed to produce record-breaking performances.

Mondo athletic tracks have been underneath the feet of Olympians since 1972. In that time, 300 records were broken on surfaces designed and constructed in Alba, Italy.

Georgia Tech’s George C. Griffin Track and Field Facility was outfitted with a Mondo track before the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta to serve as the workout track for the Olympic Village, and the material has been a staple at the facility ever since. Track and field coach Grover Hinsdale explains that the consistency in Mondo’s construction sets it apart from all other tracks.

“A Mondo track is made in a climate-controlled factory, processed from the raw rubber to the finished product. So, every square inch of Mondo is the same—same durometer, same thickness, everything is the same. All other rubberized track surfaces are poured on-site, so variables like temperature and humidity affect the result, and you may end up with lanes that don’t set uniformly,” he says.

Hinsdale likened the installation process to laying carpet. It took more than 2,800 glue pots to set the 13,000 square meters (139930.84 square feet) of track inside Stade de France.

Wimbledon expansion set for green light after GLA backs park plans
Thu 19 Sep 2024 20.18 BST

Image

It appears to be game, set and match for the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) in its lengthy battle to build 39 new courts on Wimbledon Park after the Greater London Authority recommended that the project should be approved.

The proposals have been deeply controversial, with local residents warning of 10 years of disruption as well as the creation of a huge “tennis industrial complex” that would lie silent for much of the year. However officers at the GLA recommended on Thursday that the deputy mayor should grant conditional planning permission at a public hearing on Friday 27 September.

In the conclusion to a 221-page report, the officials said the project complied with most relevant planning policies and there were “no material considerations that are considered to justify the refusal of consent”. The report also stated that the proposal would bring in £336m of annual benefits and “would result in the creation of 40 year-round jobs and 256 Championships jobs”.

The AELTC has argued that it needs a third 8,000-seat show court, along with 38 other grass courts that would largely host qualifying matches and improved practice facilities, to ensure Wimbledon remains the world’s pre-eminent tennis tournament. Residents have maintained it will cause environmental damage and a loss of green spaces on protected metropolitan open land (MOL).

Merton council initially approved the plans, but the proposal was referred to the GLA after Wandsworth council rejected the scheme last November. The land in question straddles the two boroughs. The full planning hearing will take place at City Hall on 27 September, with a verdict potentially taken later the same day.

Wasn't really sure where to put this as it is technically sports. So, this is definitely something to look at on that day and what will happen to the land in question.

Wimbledon replaces all line judges with electronic line calling from 2025, All England Club says
Wednesday 9 October 2024 18:34, UK

Image

Wimbledon is to replace all of its line judges with Live Electronic Line Calling from 2025, the tournament's organisers have said.

In a major break from tradition, the championships will follow the lead of the other Grand Slam tournaments, the Australian Open and US Open, as well as a number of other tour events.

Hawk-Eye technology has been used on certain courts at Wimbledon since 2007, helping officials and allowing players to challenge line calls.

From 2025, the system will be fully automated across the entire site, including during qualifying at Roehampton.

It means line judges will no longer be required for the first time in the tournament's 147-year history.

Tuchel agrees to become next England manager

15 October 2024, 19:14 BST

Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has agreed to become the next England manager.

The BBC has been told by two different sources that German Tuchel will become the third non-British permanent manager of the England men's team after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

England have been without a permanent manager since Gareth Southgate resigned following the Three Lions' Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain.

Government to introduce 'strengthened' football governance bill
7 hours ago

"Strengthened" legislation to establish an independent football regulator for the elite men's game in England is set to be introduced to Parliament by the government.

The regulator will be given "new powers" as part of the Football Governance Bill, including over the Premier League's controversial multi-million pound 'parachute payments' that are given to relegated clubs.

It will "explicitly require clubs to provide effective engagement" with fans on changes to ticket prices, and any proposals to relocate home grounds.

It will no longer be required to consider government foreign and trade policy when approving club takeovers, and there will be "a clear commitment" to do more to improve equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

The bill will be introduced on Thursday in the House of Lords in an attempt to speed up the legislation.

I find the Myke Tyson Jake Paul fight really sad.

Jake Paul will probably win "A 27 year-old d head beat up a 58 year old legend" wow what an accomplishment mate.
I suppose it will be enjoyable if Tyson wins in which case it will be sad from a pathetic standpoint.

Sleep Cycle an Uphill Battle for the Most Driven Tour de France Competitors
July 3, 2025

Introduction:
( Eurekalert) Peak performance in elite sport relies on a myriad of physical and mental capacities – and now there is an increasing consideration of the role of good sleep for training and competition performance.

A new study led by Flinders University sleep experts in collaboration with Lumin Sports uses data from Garmin smartwatches and other monitoring technology to explore sleep, wellbeing and performance of elite male cyclists competing in the world’s most famous bike race – the Tour de France.

“We tracked how riders slept, felt, and performed during the demanding three-week race, as well as before and after, during preparation and recovery,” says Josh Fitton, from the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute (FHMRI) Sleep Health research group in the College of Medicine and Public Health.

“Interestingly, the riders pushing the hardest – as measured by a metric named the ‘Performance Index’ – tended to sleep less and reported lower sleep quality during the race.

“So, the riders you see leading the race might be sacrificing their sleep in the process.”

Some Pro Athletes Keep Getting Better as They Age − Neuroscience Can Explain How They Stay Sharp
By Fiddy Davis Jaihind Jothikaran
August 18, 2025

Introduction:
(The Conversation) In a world where sports are dominated by youth and speed, some athletes in their late 30s and even 40s are not just keeping up – they are thriving.

Novak Djokovic is still outlasting opponents nearly half his age on tennis’s biggest stages. LeBron James continues to dictate the pace of NBA games, defending centers and orchestrating plays like a point guard. Allyson Felix won her 11th Olympic medal in track and field at age 35. And Tom Brady won a Super Bowl at 43, long after most NFL quarterbacks retire.

The sustained excellence of these athletes is not just due to talent or grit – it’s biology in action. Staying at the top of their game reflects a trainable convergence of brain, body and mindset. I’m a performance scientist and a physical therapist who has spent over two decades studying how athletes train, taper, recover and stay sharp. These insights aren’t just for high-level athletes – they hold true for anyone navigating big life changes or working to stay healthy.

Increasingly, research shows that the systems that support high performance – from motor control to stress regulation, to recovery – are not fixed traits but trainable capacities. In a world of accelerating change and disruption, the ability to adapt to new changes may be the most important skill of all.

So, what makes this adaptability possible – biologically, cognitively and emotionally?
