Re: Personal chat thread
I went to my best friends early birthday outing for all of his friends yesterday in the rain etc yay!!!
He had decided that 3 of us should go up and come back from his friends apartment, just of Gloucester City Centre into Cheltenham, he had booked 5 of us to go to Mr Mulligan's Crazy Golf which was quite fun on the day and afterwards for tea we were suppose to go to Nando's but it was very busy and it was a 45 minute wait for a table, eventually we ended up at Brewdog instead in Cheltenham.

Re: Personal chat thread
I decided to tweak it and remove Lemmy from my joining list and also will be on each of the three platforms Mon, Weds and Fri and keeping Tuesday, Thursday and the weekend as my days off social media (To make it smoothly as possible through these platforms), excluding Substack of course.Time_Traveller wrote: ↑Sat Nov 16, 2024 5:27 pm As of 1st December 2024, I have decided to re-join social media after being away from it for the last 2 years on Bluesky, Hive possibly, Lemmy (similar to Reddit), Mastodon and Substack as even though I am staying away from Politics as much as I can on these socials, I do follow Byline Times as much as I can and they are on this platform. r/DefendingAIArt has honestly gone down the drain as of now. Mostly drama queens and a concerning amount of MAGAs now

Will star trek like shields be possible? What is the latest research and/or experiments into this?

Big jump. There's a lot we need to figure out before that happens.
Re: Personal chat thread
Unless AI really changes the game, we're at least decades it seems for even a working theory on how we could do it, much less any kind of prototype. This is up there with lightsabers and warp drives.weatheriscool wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2024 1:42 am Will star trek like shields be possible? What is the latest research and/or experiments into this?

Re: Personal chat thread
That sucks. Seems like most of the exciting stuff is decades or completely out of reach. Warp drive vastly more likely then shields or teleportation(soild objects moved from point to another) based on the reality of at least having theory supporting it and how it will be done.Vakanai wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2024 12:22 pmUnless AI really changes the game, we're at least decades it seems for even a working theory on how we could do it, much less any kind of prototype. We'd have to make energy capable of 1. incasing the object(ship) in a protective shell like earths magnetic shielding against solar winds is the closes science understands to the goal. Maybe that is the solution? 2.The power to sustain it??? Such would take a lot of power. 3. How can we make it stop solid objects like asteroids and rockets??? This is probably why the energy level would have to be mindblowing. It would literally have to stop solid objects instead of solar winds and harmful radiation.

I'm finishing with seeing a therapist now.
Basically I've started the process of ending it and our last session will be the one before march starts.

Re: Personal chat thread
To be fair, shielding largely isn't needed for space craft if we ever do get warp drives, at least somewhat theoretically. Since technically you aren't moving through space at all but bending it around you. So objects aren't on a collision course with your ship, the space they exist in is bending around and avoiding you entirely.weatheriscool wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2024 5:27 pmThat sucks. How well this works in reality is yet to be seen obviously, and is just one of the theories and what might happen...others are more, well, not-survivable...
Re: Personal chat thread
Extremely hectic week, as I'm preparing to leave London and have a ton of things to sort out. Just got the keys to my new place in Essex. Glad I'll have three weeks' holiday after all this to relax and recover...
Re: Personal chat thread
I did a US military IQ test that used US terms I was unfamiliar with (money measurements, length measurements etc) and was distracted a tiny bit by someone during it.
https://cognitivemetrics.co/test/AGCT
I scored 112.

This grants me more confidence than anything really, I used to assume I had below average intellect and I see IQ as a great measurement of intelligence. It implies I can change my life a lot and a lot of my current situation is caused by other factors. (For example, if I type like English isn't my first language on here I couldn't really handwrite in school presumably due to delays from something like autism which nuked my education)
I want to do more cognitive testing to get more accurate measurements even if that means the score drops. I have no ego over IQ I see it just like height, I think it is really healthy for me to understand what my intellectual capacity is.

Re: Personal chat thread
The pricing of train tickets is crazy. I've just decided to spend an extra couple of days with my parents here in Norfolk, because if I leave today, it'll cost £50. But if I wait until Thursday morning, the exact same journey gets reduced to £12. WTF.

Re: Personal chat thread
It would probably cost me here in the Untied states a couple of hundred bucks to travel on amtrak a similar dance. I'd do some traveling if it was ever 12 dollars and maybe if was 50.
Re: Personal chat thread
Trying to get 910 Mbps broadband for my new place, having been stuck with <70 Mbps (which frequently disconnected randomly) for many years at my previous studio. It sounds like they'll need to dig under the paving to install a full-fibre connection, which could be tricky. So I've just asked my letting agent for permission. But if this goes smoothly, I'll have a 13x Internet speed improvement (!).
Re: Personal chat thread
A video and some pics from yesterday – my first trip into London since leaving. Felt a little strange to be an "outsider" now.
A friend and I went to see "War of The Worlds: The Immersive Experience". Really cool interactive sci-fi with actors, live action, special effects and VR. Spoiled slightly by people in the other group who kept breaking the immersion by making overly-enthusiastic "WHOOP!" noises.
Filming wasn't allowed inside, so I only got pics of the entrance.
Dinner afterwards at Osteria Del Mercato, a nice Italian restaurant in the historic Leadenhall Market.

Full-fibre connection sorted, finally!
This is about 15 times faster than what I had in London.

Re: Personal chat thread
Probably going to have laser eye surgery again, but only in my left eye.
I first had it done in 2008 (Jesus, was it really that long ago?).
That was for both eyes, and was life-changing. But the vision in my left eye has deteriorated since then. It's quite bad now, with a slight double vision around everything. Possibly due to presbyopia and/or the return of my astigmatism.
I went with Accuvision in Fulham last time, but am considering the London Vision Clinic on Harley Street, as their tech is apparently even better. Bit more expensive though.

Imagine a.i like this coming out in the 20 years ago. What would people think.
Imagine out of the blue a company like open a.i came out and released in 2005?
