Cyber-Nostalgy

Post by evxinvs »

Earth, 08:00 PM 2005

It is 8pm and I am sitting in front of a very disorganized desk. An empty cup featuring remnants of yesterday tea and a dry teabag is waiting to be refilled. The desk also accommodates some pencils, plenty of unnecessary “paper” mail like bank statements, some junk propaganda, and last year’s Christmas postcard. Training materials of different subjects are stacking three towers on the edges of the desk. Parts of the desk that are not covered with some useless paperwork, pencils, cups, or any other absolutely necessary props are covered with dust. In front of it there is a shelf, full of CDs and DVDs of all kinds. Pirate video games (keygen and malware included), some original software (few to be honest), some CDs to access the internet of late 90’s that were giving for free in some electronic shop, many “Ripped” (still remember that word) movies and some well-hidden porn DVDs... It is the year 2005 and in the center of all this is an Acer TravelMate 240 with an open phpBB forum on the screen. I’m writing a long answer to a smart discussion. Spent 40 minutes thinking, collecting information, providing proofs, but it is worth it! My opponent is smart – he (or she) always surprised me with non-standard replicas to my smart and long statements. But this time I found irrefutable proof of my position, with some credible Yahoo Geocities sites (supposedly maintained by reputable Univesity professors...) that support my ideas. Exam tomorrow? Who cares! Just last final read, and press “Submit” ...

Fast forward 17 years... It’s 11:30 pm. I am older and maybe wiser. I have children, wife. My desk is well organized. A cozy and expensive LED lamp is illuminating my desk with dimmed orange light (that only with my voice can change color and brightness depending on the mood). My work-from-home personal “home office” is full of warm pre-Christmas smell from an exclusive candle ordered on the other side of the world and delivered in less than a week to my apartment. Big 4K curved display is my portal to the electronic universe. Universe which is “home” for all of you reading this post and for that smart forum opponent I was so pleasured to confront back in 2005. He or she is also somewhere there, in the universe behind this 4k portal.

I’m writing this post on the very same, blue-colored phpBB forum as 17 years ago. It looks different on a 4K, but it has the feel and touch of the internet of the 00’s. It has the smart people arguing on topics that matter. It has the long reads that by the amount of effort and time invested should be copyrighted [No!]. It has it all.

Could I have imagined 17 years ago that I would be nostalgying for a phpBB forum software? Could I have imagined my current desk setup? I don’t know, but I really want to keep imagining with you, fellow forum habitants, how would be the world, and my desk, 17 years from now. Early meeting tomorrow? Project deadline on Monday? Who cares! Just last final read, and press “Submit”

I miss the old forum and its arcane design. I miss the old smilies/smileys and black interface too.

As much as I'm sure these videos ripped off the timeline and annoyed WjFox. I'm super nostalgic for them and their style. I watched this one in 2011 or something.

Thugz4Real had a few good ones, but zthechainz was the BLUEPRINT, the SOURCE.

Watching videos like this gave me such great hope for the future. The feeling verged on euphoria.
