England World Cup squad announced as Gareth Southgate names 26-man selection for Qatar
UPDATED 14:22, 10 Nov 2022

James Maddison is the shock inclusion in England’s World Cup squad.

Leicester midfielder Maddison, 25, has been in outstanding form for his club this season and, despite only having one cap three years ago, he is in from the cold. Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has been championing Maddison’s form and claimed last weekend it would be a “travesty” if he missed out.

Despite the fierce competition in the wide areas and England not playing with a No10, Gareth Southgate has listened and watched him in recent weeks. There was also a call-up for Newcastle striker Callum Wilson who got the nod ahead of Ivan Toney and Tammy Abraham while Mirror Sport has revealed Dominic Calvert-Lewin has suffered a fresh injury setback and misses out.

Kyle Walker is also included in the squad which flies to Qatar on Tuesday despite not yet playing for Manchester City after undergoing groin surgery last month. City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is also in despite his recent injury problems and having been involved in a race against time to be in.

Arsenal’s versatile defender Ben White also gets the nod to strengthen Southgate’s options at the back. Eric Dier is also in but there was heartbreak for James Ward-Prowse, Jarrod Bowen, Marc Guehi and Fikayo Tomori.

FIFA and Qatar 'rattled' as European World Cup boycott gathers pace
Updated: 10/11/2022 - 14:27

The giant banners are now a familiar sight at German Bundesliga games.

Unfurled by fans, and seen by millions watching on TV, "Boycott Qatar 2022" has become a rallying cry for clubs, supporters and players alike who oppose this month's World Cup and want to highlight human rights and environmental concerns in the host nation.

"The closer the World Cup gets, the more intense the message is getting," explained Stefan Schirmer from the Boycott Qatar campaign.

"We have the impression that since the last two or three months, the momentum is gaining, it's going up," Schirmer, who plays football for an amateur club in Mainz, told Euronews.

Schirmer is involved with other volunteers in the campaign to keep public attention on the controversial decision to award the World Cup to Qatar. Recently, the US Justice Department alleged Qatar was involved in bribing FIFA delegates for votes, something Doha and FIFA strongly deny.

Colombian singer Maluma walks out of Qatar human rights interview

Colombian singer Maluma has left a live TV interview after the reporter suggested he could be accused of whitewashing Qatari human rights abuses.

During a broadcast on Israeli public television, Maluma was asked: "Don't you have a problem with human rights violations in this country?"

He responded that was something he couldn't resolve, adding he had come to "enjoy life, enjoy soccer".

The star features alongside Nicki Minaj and Myriam Fares on Tukoh Taka, the official Fifa Qatar World Cup anthem.

The reporter is right, people are whitewashing Qatari human rights abuses by being there or being apart of it, kind off similar to David Beckham as the World Cup ambassador.

Fifa World Cup revenue up by more than €1bn after taking tournament to Qatar
Sun 20 Nov 2022 13.29 GMT

Fifa has increased its World Cup revenue by more than $1bn (£840m) after taking the tournament to Qatar, the governing body has revealed.

Gianni Infantino, the subject of widespread criticism on Saturday after a provocative opening speech, shared information regarding the record income with his national associations on Sunday.

Revenue generated by the four-year cycle of the Qatar World Cup (from 2018 to 2022, including an extra five months because of the winter schedule) will reach $7.5bn, compared with $6.4bn for the previous cycle in Russia.
