Hage Geingob: Namibia's president dies aged 82
10 minutes ago

Namibia's President Hage Geingob has died at the age of 82 while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek.

A veteran of the country's independence struggle, Mr Geingob had been diagnosed with cancer and revealed the details to the public last month.

He died early on Sunday with his wife and children by his side, Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba announced.

Namibia "has lost... a distinguished servant of the people", he said.

According to the constitution, Mr Mbumba will now act as president as there was less than a year left of Mr Geingob's second term in office. Presidential and parliamentary elections had already been scheduled for November.

Ian Lavender: Dad's Army star dies aged 77
52 minutes ago

The Dad's Army actor Ian Lavender, who played Private Pike in the hit TV series, has died at the age of 77.

Birmingham-born Lavender was just 22 when he was cast as the guileless platoon member, in what was then a new BBC sitcom.

But it made him a household name, and he ended up spending 10 years as part of the comedy classic.

Lavender, who died on Friday, was the last surviving main cast member of the series.

Away from Dad's Army, he also acted in other TV comedies such as Yes Minister, and appeared on stage, including in The Merchant of Venice.

He also had a stint on EastEnders as Derek Harkinson, a role he reprised in 2016 for a festive storyline.

Acclaimed Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa dies at age 88
2h ago

World-renowned Japanese orchestra conductor Seiji Ozawa has died of heart failure at the age of 88, his management office has said.

Ozawa died on Tuesday at his Tokyo home and his funeral was attended only by close relatives as his family wished to have a quiet farewell, his office, Veroza Japan, said.

The acclaimed Japanese maestro, one of the best-known of his generation, spent decades in the rarefied atmosphere of top orchestras around the world but wore baseball-themed ties to interviews and preferred to be called by his first name, not "maestro".

His bushy hair and smile charmed audiences, especially in the United States, where his tenure as music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra spanned nearly three decades.

He led the orchestra from 1973 to 2002, longer than any other conductor in the orchestra's 128-year history, exerting enormous influence in that time.

Ewen MacIntosh: The Office actor dies aged 50

Actor and comedian Ewen MacIntosh, best known for his role as "Big Keith" in The Office, has died aged 50.

The character, Keith Bishop, was a scotch egg-loving accountant who had a monotone answerphone message and would have rather had a career as a DJ.

MacIntosh also appeared in other British comedies including Miranda and Little Britain.

The show's creator Ricky Gervais led the tributes on X/Twitter, describing MacIntosh as "an absolute original".

Bishop, who worked at fictional paper company Wernham Hogg, will be remembered for scenes such as when he dressed up as Ali G for Red Nose Day.

Image

American interior designer and fashion icon Iris Apfel has died at the age of 102.

The self-proclaimed “geriatric starlet” worked for decades in the textile industry before she soared to fame as an octogenarian with recognition of her eccentric design sense.

Apfel’s signature look was characterised by her oversized glasses, layers of chunky jewellery and colourful and eclectic clothing, with her bob-cut white hair.

The death of the “extraordinary” Apfel was confirmed by her commercial agent, Lori Sale, who did not provide a cause of death. It is believed she died at her home in Palm Beach, Florida.

The news came on her verified Instagram page on Friday, which a day earlier had celebrated that Leap Day represented her 102nd-and-a-half birthday.
