Machines will control you through persuasion in the future

Post by funkervogt »

If machines can ultimately do everything that humans can do, then it means they will be excellent debaters with encyclopedic knowledge of all facts and counterarguments, they will know how to "read" their audiences very well and to attenuate their messaging for maximum effect, and they will be able to fake emotions convincingly.
Stand aside, Siri and Alexa. An IBM team led by artificial intelligence (A.I.) researcher Noam Slonim has devised a system that does not merely answer questions; it debates the questioners.

In a contest against champion human debaters, Slonim's Project Debater, which speaks with a female voice, impressed the judges. She didn't win, but that could change.

As her developers explain in a March Nature article, Project Debater's computational argumentation technology consists of four main modules. The argument mining module accesses 400 million recent newspaper articles. The argument knowledge base deploys general debating principles. The rebuttal module matches objections to the points made by the other side. The debate construction module filters and chooses the arguments deemed most relevant and persuasive.

...An April Nature editorial, however, predicted that computational argumentation will improve. "One day," the journal suggested, such systems will be able to "create persuasive language with stronger oratorical ability and recourse to emotive appeals—both of which are known to be more effective than facts and logic in gaining attention and winning converts, especially for false claims."

We'll look back at today's tracking algorithms and target advertising bots as the primitive precursors of machine master manipulators.

Yes of course, this is how they'll eventually take over, by slowly persuading us to hand over the keys to our industries and social/political institutions one by one. Not with some skynet bs.

I agree that scenario is likelier. AIs will slowly make themselves indispensable to humans until one day, we wake up and realize they're in control of everything and we can't do anything about it.

For example, imagine a future where AI does 99% of the work (physical and mental), and all humans sit at home waiting for their UBI checks to arrive in the mail. Everyone also has a robot butler to do work for them around the house and to follow them to the mall and carry their bags. In this scenario, humans would be totally dependent upon machines for everything, humans would have no clue how to survive for even one day without a machine's help, an interruption in service would literally be a disaster, and there would always be at least one robot in close proximity to every human, all the time. You've got no place to hide, you're too fat to run, and you're too weak to fight.

Ostensibly, humans would still be in control of the world, but AIs would really be in charge.

Is this scenario really any different than being dependent on modern conveniences like electricity or the internet? The latter of which is very recent even by our standards, yet many could never imagine doing without. I don't view it as a bad thing, so long as humans augment themselves to keep pace with technological trends. If the machines could better guide humanity through crisis like the current one or plan out near perfect guidelines for future instability, then we should hope for this outcome. We're only biased now because of how said intelligences came into being, rather than what actual plans or goals they might implement.

While it's possible "dependency" might make some humans weaker, it could also make us stronger and more fitter. Imagine the robots surveying our healthcare and eating habits, optimizing our diet and/or lifestyle for the maximum efficiency. Our lifespans would improve at the cost of the "freedom" to be able to put junk into our bodies or consume junk for our minds. What if an intelligent machine could optimize certain movies, music, or experiences which boost our confidence for the day or even change our outlook altogether?

I imagine some would definitely "opt out" of this arrangement, but I can see it being a big disadvantage to do so.

Yeah, it's likely we'll have a symbiotic relationship with the machines and AI in the same way we benefit from bacteria flora in our intestine. All of us are going to keep evolving, becoming more dependent on each other until we are indistinguishable from one another.
To know is essentially the same as not knowing. The only thing that occurs is the rearrangement of atoms in your brain.

This is nearer then you think. Look at GPT-3, with GP-4 about to release. Look at DALL-E, image generation on the fly.

When the dust settles, people will stop trusting either words or media as a means of persuasion for fear of being subtly leaned on. We'll revert to actions speak louder then words; people will demonstrate thier arguments as a fair and legitimate means of proof. Becoming so civilized we revert back to barbarism. Or you'll speak in the most unflowery way possible. Another point for barbarism.

You'll have two choices for exploring an idea: either speaking concisely online, amounting to a machine brain collectively - the natural evolution of the hive mind; or discussing with people you know and trust.

As for media; i guess if you can't trust anything you watch, you'll have to make your own. Another point for the barbarism meter.
