I recall predicting a second coming of the dust bowl, and frankly I expected it to have started around about this point. But it's been slower in coming than I expected. so, maybe within the next 3 years? Or maybe I'm being too literal, and should adjust to include the fires and failed crop yields as the focus and not dust storms and such. Either way I expect that year and a few following this one to be very upsetting to agricultural land in the US and frankly europe and asia have some of their own versions of this brewing.

that and water shortage are increasing tensions withing nations already divided and between nations too.

^^^I wonder how much was learned from the dust storms of the 1930s. Things like crop rotation to promote a healthy soil not prone to turn to dust, planting of trees in rows as wind breaks, etc.

These measures may not halt the coming of dust storms, but they would surely affect the timing. At least that is my two cents (for today).

Eighty Million More to Starve: Leaked UN Report Lays Bare Catastrophic Effects of Climate Change

https://www.thenationalnews.com/world/e ... -1.1247347

Introduction:
(The National) Hunger, drought and disease caused by climate change will affect millions more people within decades, the UN has said in a leaked report that sets out the dire human health consequences of a warming planet.

The forthcoming report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, obtained by AFP, offers a distressing vision of the decades to come.
Policy choices made now, such as promoting plant-based diets, can limit these health consequences, but many are unavoidable in the short term, the report says.

It warns of the cascading impacts that simultaneous crop failures, soaring inflation and the falling nutritional value of basic foods are likely to have on the world’s most vulnerable people.

Depending on how well humans get a handle on carbon emissions and rising temperatures, a child born today could be confronted with numerous climate-related health threats before turning 30, the report says.
Don't mourn, organize.

Antarctic lake disappears after ice shelf fractures
By David Szondy
June 27, 2021
https://newatlas.com/environment/antarc ... fractures/
An Antarctic lake holding twice the volume of water as San Diego Bay in California has vanished. An international team of scientists used satellite imagery to show that on the Amery Ice Shelf in East Antarctica, a lake containing an estimated 600 to 750 million cubic meters (21 to 26 billion cu ft) of water drained through the ice and into the ocean during the 2019 Antarctic winter.

Unless it involves dams breaking, one doesn't expect something like a full-size lake to simply disappear. However, the Antarctic ice cap isn't a normal place by everyday standards. Though the popular image of the region is one of unending snow and ice, lakes filled with meltwater form on the surface during the Antarctic summer.

CCC: UK will miss climate goals by ‘huge margin’ without new policies
24 June 2021

The UK government has once again failed to come forward with sufficient policies to meet the ambition of its climate goals, according to the Climate Change Committee (CCC).

Across nearly 500 pages examining the government’s net-zero and adaptation targets, the climate advisers spell out the gap between aspirations and reality in a pair of new reports.

Only four of 21 key decarbonisation areas outlined in the report have seen sufficient ambition and only two have adequate policies in place for cutting emissions, according to the CCC. None of the 34 adaptation priority areas it identifies have seen strong progress.

The committee says it is “disappointing” that many “vital and long-promised plans”, concerning everything from clean transport to hydrogen, have yet to emerge.

With the UK preparing to host the COP26 summit in Glasgow, the CCC warns that the government’s backlog – which includes an overarching plan for achieving its net-zero emissions target – could harm its credibility and push its climate goals out of reach.

Earth’s Cryosphere Shrinking by 87,000 Square Kilometers per Year – “A Major Global Change”
July 2, 2021

First global assessment of the extent of snow and ice cover on Earth’s surface—a critical factor cooling the planet through reflected sunlight—and its response to warming temperatures.

The global cryosphere—all of the areas with frozen water on Earth—shrank by about 87,000 square kilometers (about 33,000 square miles), a area about the size of Lake Superior, per year on average, between 1979 and 2016 as a result of climate change, according to a new study. This research is the first to make a global estimate of the surface area of the Earth covered by sea ice, snow cover, and frozen ground.

The extent of land covered by frozen water is just as important as its mass because the bright white surface reflects sunlight so effectively, cooling the planet. Changes in the size or location of ice and snow can alter air temperatures, change the sea level and even affect ocean currents worldwide.

The new study is published in Earth’s Future, AGU’s journal for interdisciplinary research on the past, present, and future of our planet and its inhabitants.

“The cryosphere is one of the most sensitive climate indicators and the first one to demonstrate a changing world,” said first author Xiaoqing Peng, a physical geographer at Lanzhou University. “Its change in size represents a major global change, rather than a regional or local issue.”

Canadian inferno: northern heat exceeds worst-case climate models
If you were drawing up a list of possible locations for hell on Earth before this week, the small mountain village of Lytton in Canada would probably not have entered your mind.

Few people outside British Columbia had heard of this community of 250 people. Those who had were more likely to think of it as bucolic. Nestled by a confluence of rivers in the forested foothills of the Lillooet and Botanie mountain ranges, the municipal website boasts: “Lytton is the ideal location for nature lovers to connect with incredible natural beauty and fresh air freedom.”

Over the past seven days, however, the village has made headlines around the world for a freakishly prolonged and intense temperature spike that turned the idyll into an inferno.

The US president, Joe Biden, and Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, have warned worried populations to brace for more. Shocked climate scientists are wondering how even worst-case scenarios failed to predict such furnace-like conditions so far north.

So many terrifying climate stories lately.

If it were up to me, all fossil fuels would be phased out within five years.

This is a literal global emergency.

The Green New Deal just shifts from one set of scarce resources, fossil fuels, to another, rare earths. There isn’t enough, lithium, rhodium, etc out there to fund the measure of consumption our societies demand. The green new deal focuses on building “green” infrastructure to hopefully outlast the decline of fossil fuels for the American Empire at the expense of the financially enslaved nations providing the resources to build it.

The IMF, World Bank and other such international institutions are designed to facilitate and coerce such capital flows out of colony nations for the benefit of centers of capital accumulation like America, Europe, Japan and to an extent China.

The only solution to the climate crisis is reduction of resource usage, vast efficiency improvements, regenerative supply chain practices, and equitable distribution of natural resources for all people. This will not happen until the oligarchical international monetary system is dismantled and replaced with a democratically governed cybernetic economy. An economy based on human and ecological need for all life.
