Crowds flee Sydney mall as multiple stabbings reported

Crowds have fled a Sydney shopping mall after reports of multiple stabbings and a possible shooting sparked a major police response.

Local media reported gunshots inside Westfield mall at Bondi junction.

Police said a critical incident had been declared following the shooting of a male just before 16:00 local time (07:00BST; 08:00GMT) after reports of multiple stabbings.

The incident is ongoing and people are urged to avoid the area.

The area has been evacuated and there are pictures of ambulances and police vehicles at the scene on social media.

News and social media addiction (habits, obsessions) is currently in my opinion a bigger problem in England and Wales than crime. However, it truly remains a huge issue in some other places of the globe.

News and social media addiction (habits, obsessions) is currently in my opinion a bigger problem in England and Wales than crime. However, it truly remains a huge issue in some other places of the globe.

This graph is an oversimplification. A substantial amount of crime is going unreported. This is partly because the police are so over-stretched that they now either arrive too late, or don't show up at all. And also because of growing distrust of law enforcement (now a major issue here, in the wake of some truly appalling cases of racial discrimination, misogyny, and general misconduct), discouraging people from reporting.

Also, this graph only shows violence, burglary, and vehicle theft. But shoplifting has seen an explosion in cases lately. More and more people now walk into shops and leave without paying. Sometimes entire gangs. The shop staff can't touch the perpetrators, and the police won't do anything.

Rape convictions are at an all-time low.

Cybercrime and fraud have been on the rise. The UK now has the highest per capita rate of cybercrime in the world.

Etc.

Also, the way crimes are reported and recorded by police has changed over the years. So improvements in data collection methods and what constitutes a crime can give a skewed view of the actual crime rate. National averages can also obscure significant local variations.

Teenage neo-Nazi who planned suicide bomb attack on synagogue jailed for eight years

A sixth form student from Brighton who drew up plans for a suicide bomb attack on a local synagogue has been jailed for eight years for terrorism offences.

Mason Reynolds, 19, from Moulscoomb was a student studying bricklaying and roofing and doing part-time labouring work on the side.

He lived with his parents and was described as leading "in many ways, a not untypical existence of a young man in his late teens".

However, Naomi Parsons, prosecuting, told Winchester Crown Court that Reynolds was a neo-Nazi who believed the white race was "destined to dominate the rest of mankind".

She said Reynolds "does not find himself here because he has political, racial or ideological views that some may find distasteful or indeed abhorrent".

CHICAGO (WLS) -- At least 71 people were shot, nine fatally, in gun violence across Chicago from Friday evening to Monday morning, CPD said.

There were 47 people shot, seven fatally, over the weekend, and 24 shot, two fatally from midnight to 5 a.m. Monday.

Two people were killed and eight wounded in a mass shooting Friday outside of a grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas, state police said. One law enforcement officer was among those wounded and has non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Arkansas State Police responded to the Mad Butcher grocery store at 11:30 a.m. local time on Friday. The shooter was critically injured and has been taken into custody, police said.

"I have been briefed on the tragic shooting in Fordyce, and I'm in constant contact with State Police at the scene. I am thankful to law enforcement and first responders for their quick and heroic action to save lives. My prayers are with the victims and all those impacted by this," Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on social media.

Female suicide bombers kill at least 18 in coordinated attack in Nigeria, authorities say

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Female suicide bombers targeted a wedding, a funeral and a hospital in coordinated attacks in northern Nigeria that killed at least 18 people, local authorities said Sunday.

The first bomber detonated during a marriage celebration in the northeastern town of Gwoza, Barkindo Saidu, director-general of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, told reporters.

“Minutes later, another blast occurred near General Hospital,” Saidu said, and the third bomber at the funeral service was disguised as a mourner. Children and pregnant women were among those killed. At least 30 others were wounded, and Saidu said injuries included abdominal ruptures and skull fractures.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the the attacks. Borno state has been heavily affected by the insurgency launched in 2009 by the Boko Haram Islamic extremist group.

Chicago July 4th weekend: 109 shot and 19 killed.

Gun violence is down across America this year but it peaks every summer and Chicago’s Fourth of July weekend bore the data out, with 109 people shot, including 19 fatally, police said in a Monday news conference.

All of the victims were boys and men ranging in age from 16 to 36 years old, according to police records.

Last year over the long holiday weekend, 57 people were shot and eight were killed between Friday, June 30 at 6 p.m. and Tuesday, July 4 at 11:59 p.m., according to Chicago police.

No suspects are in custody.

A dark and dangerous new chapter for American politics

A spray of bullets may have only grazed Donald Trump in Pennsylvania on Saturday night, but they killed one rally attendee and critically wounded two others.

They have also torn through the 2024 presidential campaign, damaging the social and cultural fabric of the nation. The illusion of security and safety in American politics – built over decades - has been dramatically shattered.

Trump received only minor injuries but it was close - a photograph by Doug Mills of the New York Times appears to show the streak of a bullet cutting through the air near the former president’s head.

Not since Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinkley Jr in 1981 has there been such a dramatic act of violence directed against a president - or presidential candidate.

It harkens back to a darker time in US history, more than a half-century ago, when two Kennedy brothers – one a president and one a presidential candidate - were felled by assassin bullets. Civil rights leaders such as Medgar Evars, Martin Luther King Jr and Malcom X all also lost their lives in political violence.
