Trump says he’d disband the pandemic preparedness office—again

In a recent interview with TIME magazine, Donald Trump said that if reelected, he would disband the Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response Policy (OPPR), a permanent office of the executive branch established by Congress in 2022. The Biden campaign responded quickly to point out that Trump’s failed pandemic response was why the OPPR was created to begin with.

In his interview with TIME, Trump described the office as “just a way of giving out pork.” He explained, “And, yeah, I probably would [disband it], because I think we’ve learned a lot and we can mobilize, you know, we can mobilize. A lot of the things that you do and a lot of the equipment that you buy is obsolete when you get hit with something. And as far as medicines, you know, these medicines are very different depending on what strains, depending on what type of flu or virus it may be. You know, things change so much. So, yeah, I think I would.”

The pledge to act quickly in response to a public health emergency stands in sharp contrast to the actions of the Trump administration while in office. Before declaring a pandemic on March 17, 2020, Donald Trump repeatedly undermined the seriousness of the disease, saying on January 22nd that “It’s just one person coming from China.” On February 10th, he implied that it would go away with the heat in April. “It’s going to disappear,” he said on February 27th. On March 10th, just days before declaring a pandemic, Trump urged everyone to “Just stay calm. It will go away.”

Recognizing the need for a speedier response to public health emergencies, OPPR was created to bolster the “whole-of-government” approach to addressing health emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic. The current head of OPPR, retired Maj. Gen. Paul Friedrichs, recently appeared before the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic to confirm this goal to the chairman, Brad Wenstrup. Friedrichs admitted that the newly created office had not yet been tested and that its “success will be judged by what happens in the next pandemic.”

The irony of public health interventions is that, if successful, they often look like overreactions. The absence of a public health emergency can’t always be seen as a successful intervention, but the occurrence of an emergency can be seen as a failure.

To the question of how and why is Trump's support so strong compared to Biden's, one must look toward the information silos to which the American public sequesters itself. For example, look at the relative ratings of the cable news networks:

Fox News in primetime had 2.135 million total viewers/246,000 Adults 25-54. In total day, it had 1.306 million/158,000 viewers in both categories, respectively....

MSNBC was the No. 2 cable news network in primetime and total viewers for the month of March, with 1.307 million and 830,000 viewers, respectively...

CNN landed in third place in total viewers in primetime and total day with 601,000 and 462,000 viewers, respectively....

As most of our readers understand, Fox News is far more conservative than MSNBC or CNN.

CNN actually has a lot of conservative pundits showing up on its various panels, so it is not entirely liberal/progressive. MSNBC is very pro-Democratic, but falls far behind Fox News in the ratings.

Talk show radio is also often dominated by conservative hosts.

Why these conservative news outlets are so much more popular is hard to understand, much less explain in a brief post.

Michigan Republican Unseated After Losing to Democrat by 20 Points

A Republican county commissioner has been unseated in Michigan after losing to her Democratic challenger by 20 percentage points.

Chris Kleinjans won an Ottawa County election on Tuesday with 60 percent of the vote share, while the Republican incumbent Lucy Ebel lost, having received 40 percent.

Michigan is a battleground state that will be key to November's presidential election. Donald Trump won the county with 61 percent of the vote in 2020.

Ebel had faced a recall petition that was signed by some 3,000 people after she voted in favor of a motion to reverse Adeline Hambley's selection as the top health official in the county on February 28, 2023. There were concerns about the legality of the motion.

What happens in Michigan may indicate the result of the 2024 election as it is a key swing state. In 2016, Trump, the presumptive Republican candidate for the election, took Michigan, but incumbent President Joe Biden flipped it back in 2020, suggesting that the result in 2024 will be tight in this state.

Haley Nabs 128,000 Votes in Indiana GOP Primary Months After Ending Her Campaign

(The Hill) Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley garnered more than 128,000 votes in Indiana’s GOP presidential primary Tuesday, according to election results from Decision Desk HQ, despite suspending her White House bid in early March.

While the Hoosier State race was called for former President Trump — with 78.3 percent of the vote — Haley pulled a notable share, bringing in 21.7 percent of the vote.

(Axios) Crypto is increasingly throwing its weight behind industry-friendly candidates.

The big picture: Crypto super political action committees, commonly known as PACs, have raised more than $100 million for 2024 congressional elections, according to a recent report by Public Citizen.

• Coinbase and Ripple have accounted for roughly half that.

• And efforts to this point would appear to be making a difference.

The latest: On Friday, Stand With Crypto, the nonprofit advocacy group started by Coinbase, announced its intent to raise more funds for its own PAC targeting House and Senate elections.

Angela Alsobrooks wins contentious Democratic Senate primary in Maryland

Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks (D) has won the Democratic primary for Maryland’s open Senate seat, according to a projection from Decision Desk HQ.

Alsobrooks beat out fellow Democrat Rep. David Trone (Md.) in what had become a tumultuous race. Just days earlier, an Emerson College Polling/The Hill/DC News Now found the two in a dead heat.

She will make history if she wins in November, becoming the first Black woman to represent the Old Line State in the Senate.

Alsobrooks is set to face off against popular former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) in the fall.
