Eric Adams will win Democratic primary for NYC mayor, CNN projects
Source: CNN

(CNN)Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams will be the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City, CNN projects, following the latest ranked-choice count of primary voters, a tally that for the first time included the lion's share of nearly 126,000 absentee ballots cast.

Former Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia finished a narrow second in the count released Tuesday night by the New York City Board of Elections, with Adams leading her by a single percentage point -- 50.5% to 49.5% -- in the final round. Civil rights attorney Maya Wiley made it to the penultimate round, placing third in the still-unofficial results.
CNN projects the remaining uncounted ballots won't be enough for any of the other candidates to catch Adams.
Adams has spoken confidently since Election Night, when he raced out to an early lead -- and declared victory after the new numbers were published by the BOE. If he defeats Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, a heavy underdog, in the fall, Adams would become the second Black mayor in the city's history and the first since the late David Dinkins lost reelection in 1993. A retired captain in the New York Police Department, Adams emerged from a deep field and dizzying campaign that included former 2020 presidential candidate Andrew Yang, who briefly seemed to captivate the city before the contest intensified. Yang conceded shortly after the polls closed on June 22 and is on track to finish fourth.

Tiffany Cunningham Confirmed by Senate as First Black Federal Circuit Judge
by Jack Rodgers
July 19, 2021

https://www.courthousenews.com/tiffany- ... uit-judge/

Introduction:
WASHINGTON (Courthouse News) — The Senate confirmed Tiffany Cunningham to a seat on the Federal Circuit court Monday, by a 63-33 vote. She will be the first Black woman to serve on the patent-focused court.

Cunningham’s legal career began at the U.S. Federal Circuit in 2001 where she clerked to then-judge Timothy Dyk. Cunningham also was a Kirkland & Ellis partner from 2007 until 2014, when she then became a partner at Perkins Coie.

She is a member of the Perkins Coie’s firm’s 17-member Executive Committee on Patent Litigation and has received a well-qualified rating from the American Bar Association.

Cunningham was nominated by President Joe Biden in March, with another 10 nominees, which the president described as a “trailblazing slate,” of candidates. Included among those nominees alongside Cunningham was Ketanji Brown Jackson — confirmed by the Senate by a 53-44 vote last month and rumored to be the president’s top choice to fill a Supreme Court vacancy, should one arise.

Before her full nomination on the Senate floor Monday, Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Durbin lauded Cunningham’s accomplishments in a June committee meeting. He noted Cunningham’s chemical engineering degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her Harvard Law degree as “exceptional credentials.”

McConnell says no Republicans will vote to raise debt ceiling
Source: CNN
Republicans will not vote to increase the debt ceiling, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a new interview, putting additional political pressure on Democrats in the coming weeks.

"I can't imagine there will be a single Republican voting to raise the debt ceiling after what we've been experiencing," McConnell said in an interview with Punchbowl News published Wednesday.

Democrats could include the debt ceiling increase in their budget reconciliation bill currently being debated, multiple sources tell CNN. But the more likely scenario is that Democrats could tie the debt ceiling to a must-pass funding bill at the end of September, which would force Republicans to decide if they'd want to vote to default and shut down the government at the same time. The Treasury Department has several methods available to delay the effects of the debt ceiling limit until the fall, as the fiscal year ends on September 30.

If Democrats did include the debt ceiling increase in reconciliation, lawmakers would need to choose what the new borrowing limit should be in the legislation given the special budget rules.

Merrick Garland heading to Chicago to tackle surging gun violence
Source: Politico
Attorney General Merrick Garland is heading to his hometown of Chicago on Thursday to signal the Biden administration’s commitment to reining in the surge of gun violence plaguing many of America’s biggest cities.

Garland is set to unveil a set of new gun “strike forces” aimed at shutting down the pipelines of guns being illegally trafficked into urban centers, but his visit is sure to be received with some skepticism as just the latest policy pronouncement from Washington. Shootings in the Windy City have seemed out of control for years, particularly in the summer.

Last weekend, 56 people were shot in Chicago; 11 of them fatally. Over the Fourth of July weekend, at least 108 people were shot with at least 17 people killed, according to the Chicago Tribune.

"We are redoubling our efforts as ATF works with law enforcement to track the movement of illegal firearms used in violent crimes," Garland said in a statement. "These strike forces enable sustained coordination across multiple jurisdictions to help disrupt the worst gun trafficking corridors."

Rise of the Right: White Supremacy and the Myth of the “White Working-Class”
by Anthony Dimagio
July 23, 2021

https://www.counterpunch.org/2021/07/23 ... ing-class/

Extract:
(Counterpunch)…there is simply no statistically significant relationship between economic insecurity – as measured by Americans’ incomes – and support for various conspiratorial and rightwing extremist movements, including the militia movement, QAnon, “alt-right” neofascism, and neo-Nazism.

Trump support…is driven by reactionary socio-political attitudes... Trump supporters are…more likely to embrace rightwing plutocratic views, opposing increases to the minimum wage, opposing regulations on fossil fuel emitters…resisting government efforts to aid the poor and the needy, agreeing that government regulation of business does more harm than good, and supporting cutting taxes on affluent households …The vast majority of Trumpeters – nearly three-quarters – see the rich as virtuous, as deserving of their wealth, and as having “worked harder” than the rest of us to obtain their wealth...

Trump voters, tend to be heavily middle to middle-upper income, with two-thirds coming from households earning more than $50,000 a year and more than a quarter from households earning more than $100,000.

…voting in economically depressed regions of the U.S. tends to favor Trump, …because relatively privileged people in these areas are more likely to vote Republican…affluent Americans are more likely to vote, translating into a serious advantage in favor of Trump in depressed areas, since economic depression is associated with depressed voter turnout among poorer Americans (who) are more likely to identify with the Democratic Party, but are less likely to turn out to vote…
...
It’s difficult to combat the aggressive and reactionary classism, racism, and sexism that plague modern America when much of the country insists that none of these things exist...denialist notions…that we had become “post-racial” grew increasingly prominent during the Obama years…such propaganda should have been finally put to bed with the rising white supremacy that was mainstreamed during the Trump years. One of the most noxious developments of all is the persistent propaganda narrative that the GOP – and by extension its supporters – are the savior of the working-class. This myth must be demolished if those of us who genuinely care about reducing poverty and inequality are to build a mass movement to address the economic challenges of our time.

Federal appeals court finds CDC eviction moratorium unlawful
Source: The Hill
A federal appeals court on Friday ruled that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) exceeded its authority by temporarily halting evictions amid the pandemic.

In a unanimous ruling, a three-judge panel of the Cincinnati-based Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with a lower court that the agency had overreached with its eviction moratorium, which is set to expire at the end of July.

The CDC order, originally enacted in September 2020 and subsequently extended by Congress and President Biden, aims to protect cash-strapped tenants who would face overcrowded conditions if evicted.

But in its Friday ruling, the court rejected the CDC's two-pronged argument that the eviction freeze was within its authority, or that Congress authorized the measure after-the-fact as part of its COVID relief legislation.

I wish they'd have added that to nasa's budget instead. Between that and a contract with Elon musk we'd probably get to mars in the next 10 years!

Ocasio-Cortez Warns Republicans Are Laying the Groundwork to 'Overturn Results' of Elections
by Jake Johnson
July 27, 2021

https://www.commondreams.org/news/2021/ ... -elections

Introduction:
(Common Dreams) Imploring the Democratic leadership to act before it's too late, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez warned Monday that the Republican supporters of newly enacted state-level voter suppression laws are laying the groundwork to overturn election results in the near future.

The New York Democrat joined the chorus voicing concern over the national Democratic Party's emerging plan to try to "out-organize" GOP-authored voter suppression laws—a strategy that civil rights organizations have said is doomed to fail in the absence of federal action to protect ballot access.

"Communities cannot 'out-organize' voter suppression when those they organize to elect won't protect the vote," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. "Even if they do out-organize, the ground is being set to overturn results."

"The time to fight like hell for democracy is right now," she added. "We may not get another chance."
caltrek's comments: I think it is very telling that the socialists are now the ones most willing to fight for democracy, while the conservatives sympathetic to business owners are now the ones working hardest to undermine democracy. The late Michael Harrington used to argue that the fight for democracy was equivalent to the fight for socialism. With that definition in mind, putting "democratic" in front of "socialism" is actually an act of redundancy.
