Long overdue time to dispense with the mythology the American right wing were ever great with business. The Reagan days are long dead, and even he would be seen as a pariah within the modern GOP. The tariff fiasco has been a shitshow and many people were warned countless times that it would be for very obvious reasons. There was no reason whatsoever to randomly antagonize Canada, yet here we are.

USDA cancels $1B in local food purchasing for schools, food banks

Source: Politico
The Agriculture Department has axed two programs that gave schools and food banks money to buy food from local farms and ranchers, halting more than $1 billion in federal spending.

DNA testing firm 23andMe files for bankruptcy to sell itself; CEO leaves after failed bids

March 24, 2025

23andMe on Sunday filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. after struggling with the fallout of a data breach and weak demand for its ancestry testing kits that featured in Oprah Winfrey's annual list of favorite things just eight years ago.

The biotech unicorn has seen a sharp fall in its market value since then. On Monday, its shares fell 46% to 96 cents after co-founder and CEO Anne Wojcicki, who made multiple failed takeover bids, also resigned.

Speaker Mike Johnson floats eliminating federal courts as GOP ramps up attacks on judges

Source: NBC News

March 25, 2025, 1:47 PM EDT

WASHINGTON — Facing pressure from his right flank to take on judges who have ruled against President Donald Trump, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Tuesday floated the possibility of Congress eliminating federal courts.

It’s the latest attack from Republicans on the federal judiciary, as courts have blocked a series of actions taken by the Trump administration. In addition to funding threats, Trump and his conservative allies have called for the impeachment of certain district court judges who have ruled against him, most notably U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, who attempted to halt Trump from using the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan migrants.

“We do have the authority over the federal courts, as you know. We can eliminate an entire district court. We have power of funding over the courts and all these other things,” Johnson told reporters on Tuesday. “But desperate times call for desperate measures, and Congress is going to act.”

Johnson, a former constitutional attorney, later clarified that he was making a point about Congress’ “broad authority” over the “creation, maintenance and the governance” of the courts. Article III of the Constitution established the Supreme Court but gave Congress the power to “ordain and establish” lower federal courts..

Trump hints that Musk and DOGE may be coming to the end of the road

Source: Yahoo! News/Politico

Mon, March 31, 2025 at 8:43 PM EDT

Elon Musk’s days as a senior White House adviser may be coming to an end — along with his government-slashing Department of Government Efficiency. President Donald Trump hinted Monday that his close ally Musk may have to go back to running his companies full time and that the tumultuous mission of DOGE will have been accomplished after firing tens of thousands of government employees.

"I think he's amazing but I also think he's got a big company to run and so at some point he's going to be going back,” Trump said of the Tesla CEO. “He wants to. I'd keep him as long as I could keep him.”

The president’s comments, made at a White House signing ceremony for an executive order calling for increased scrutiny of concert ticket resellers, came amid growing public concern about the chaos and turmoil caused by DOGE — and as the once high-flying Tesla appears to be heading for a hard landing.

Musk is classed as a temporary government employee, with a 130-day cap on his services at the White House. Under that designation, his tenure would conclude at the end of May. But a White House official told POLITICO in February that there was no end in sight to his time working alongside Trump, and that he was “here to stay.”
