Predictably, the Reddit geniuses have struck again and claimed that the average person in the US is in the top 10%.

Image

Let's look at the data. In 2022, to be among the top 10%, you'd need to have US$138,346 individually (now $151,178)(1). The average household had $176,500 in 2022 (2). While yes, the average US household net worth is in the top 10%, an individual may not have that much depending on how the money is divided.

I wonder how much longer NASA will continue to publish this data...

Trump's NOAA Will Stop Tracking Costliest Climate Disasters
by Julia Conley
May 8, 2025

Introduction:
(Common Dreams) On the heels of the news that higher-than-average temperatures continued globally in April, one of the United States' top science agencies announced Thursday that it will no longer update a database that tracks climate disasters that cause billions of dollars in damage.

As of Thursday, the Billion Dollar Weather and Climate Disasters database on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) website was replaced with a message saying there have been no such events in 2025 through April 8.

That flies in the face of an analysis by the National Centers for Environmental Information, which has maintained the database and said before it was taken down that six to eight billion-dollar climate disasters have happened so far this year, including the wildfires that devastated parts of Los Angeles in January and caused an estimated $150 billion in damage.

The World Weather Attribution said in late January that planetary heating, fueled by greenhouse gas emissions, caused weather conditions in Southern California that made the fires 35% more likely.

Hundreds of people have been laid off from NOAA in recent weeks as the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, led by billionaire tech CEO Elon Musk, has pushed to slash government spending, and those who have lost their jobs include scientists who helped maintain the database.

For the globe as a whole, April 2025 was 2.20°F (1.22°C) above the 20th-century baseline. This is 0.13°F (0.07°C) below the record-warm April of 2024, thus ranking second in the 1850–2025 period. According to NCEI’s Global Annual Temperature Outlook, there is only a 3% chance that 2025 will rank as the warmest year on record. https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/news/global-climate-202504

How States Can Fight Climate Change Without the Feds
by
May 22, 2025

Introduction:
(Futurity) In the absence of an ambitious federal climate strategy, a new study shows state-led action can make a significant difference in reducing carbon emissions and addressing climate change.

The study also found that while state-led action is only slightly more expensive than a coordinated national effort, it would likely result in the adoption of different decarbonization technologies.

“Given that there is little expectation the Trump administration will promote a national effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to address climate change, we think there is significant value in assessing what kind of difference state-led efforts could make,” says Jeremiah Johnson, corresponding author of the study and an associate professor of civil, construction, and environmental engineering at North Carolina State University.

“For this study, we looked at a combination of 23 states that, based on political and policy indicators, seem most likely to consider joint action to reduce carbon emissions.

“Specifically, we looked at what the cost of such an effort would likely be, which decarbonization technologies would likely be adopted, and the extent to which these efforts could reduce our carbon footprint—and we compared all of these things to the cost, technology, and impact of a coordinated federal effort.”

caltrek’s comment: This suggests a broader strategy to battle the Trump administration: regional governmental agencies. These regional pacts could proceed with a little help from the federal courts to fight off likely challenges from the Trump administration (and successor governments in the Trump mold). They would not need the cooperation of red States and could more appropriately address regional conditions. Lowering of federal taxes would also allow for the opportunity to raise state taxes in support of these regional governments. Control of the U.S. Senate by senators in support of such governments would be crucial to block appointments to the federal courts of justices that might otherwise be hostile to such regional agencies. An appeal based on Tenth Amendment rights should be attractive to otherwise conservative senators. More likely, voters will need to elect Democrats to the Senate that would carry on that fight.

Glacier preservation doubled by limiting warming to 1.5°C versus 2.7°C

29 May 2025

As climate warms, glaciers melt, causing sea level rise, exacerbating natural hazards, and affecting water supplies, biodiversity, and ecosystems. Zekollari et al. estimated how much glacial loss will occur with different amounts of warming and found that nearly twice as much glacial mass loss will occur if climate warms by 2.7°C compared with that which would accompany a warming of only 1.5°C above the preindustrial average global mean value (see the Perspective by Howe and Boyer). Without stringent mitigation policies, glaciers around the globe will be under serious threat.
