Mamdani Surges in New Poll, Leading Cuomo for First Time in New York Mayor’s Race

(Politico) NEW YORK — Zohran Mamdani, the young democratic socialist who has been rising in the mayor’s race, is now ahead of Andrew Cuomo with just two weeks until the Democratic primary, a new poll reviewed in full by POLITICO found.

The survey, conducted by Public Policy Polling for Democrat Justin Brannan’s city comptroller campaign, found Mamdani beating Cuomo 35 percent to 31 percent — a difference that is narrowly within the 4.1 percent margin of error.

The survey showed the race continuing to narrow to a two-person contest between the youngest and oldest candidates in the field. But it didn’t offer respondents the chance to rank up to five candidates in order of preference, as they will be able to do on primary day.

A Cuomo campaign poll conducted by Expedition Strategies and shared with POLITICO earlier this week found the former governor leading Mamdani by 12 points, 56 percent to 44 percent, after eight rounds of voting. That poll was conducted over the same period as the Public Policy Polling survey showing Mamdani’s lead. A separate survey by Data for Progress for a Mamdani-allied super PAC found Cuomo winning by 2 points, 51 percent to 49 percent, also after eight rounds.

Introduction:

(NBC Washington Staff) Former Del. Jay Jones will look to be the face of legal resistance to President Donald Trump in Virginia after winning the Democratic nomination for attorney general.

The race was closely watched among the down-ballot contests in Tuesday’s Democratic primary election. He will face Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares in the November general election.

Democrat Ghazala Hashmi is the projected winner of the primary battle for lieutenant governor, the NBC News Decision Desk said.

Sanders Wades into Battleground District with Wisconsin Endorsement

(The Hill) Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has endorsed Democrat Rebecca Cooke in her attempt for a rematch against Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-Wis.) in a battleground Wisconsin district.

Sanders said in a statement, first reported by NBC News, that he’s supporting Cooke to represent Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District because she will “stand up for working families and take on the greed of powerful special interests.”

“Rebecca is a working-class fighter who developed her populist roots in rural Western Wisconsin,” the senator continued. “A daughter of farmers, a waitress and a small business owner — she’s lived through failed policies from Washington elites and is ready to deliver tangible outcomes that working people will actually feel.”

Cooke previously ran for the House seat twice, losing the Democratic nomination in 2022 before winning the primary last year. Democrats eyed Van Orden’s seat as a possible pickup opportunity, and she narrowly lost to him by less than 3 points.

She’s now seeking to face him again in what the party hopes will be a stronger year for its prospects in 2026.

Republican Party Has Nearly Five Times More Cash on Hand than the Democrats

Introduction:

(CNBC) The Republican National Committee has almost five times the cash on hand as its Democratic counterpart, as Democrats seek to regain their footing following a disappointing 2024 cycle.

The RNC reported having $72 million on hand at the end of May, compared to just $15 million for the DNC, according to campaign filings out Friday.

While the RNC has for months held a cash advantage over the Democratic National Committee, the $57 million gap is the widest disparity between the two parties since at least July 2020, according to California Target Book's Rob Pyers.

It's still early, but the GOP's cash edge could give the party an early boost as it looks to build out campaign infrastructure ahead of next year's midterms.

Democrat Edges Republican Incumbent in New Iowa Poll

Introduction:

(Newsweek) Democrat Christina Bohannan held a lead over Republican Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks in a new Democratic-sponsored poll of Iowa's First Congressional District, according to Politico.

Why It Matters

Bohannan nearly unseated Miller-Meeks in 2024, losing by only 799 votes despite President Donald Trump carrying the district by more than 8 percentage points. It was among the closest races and went to a recount. Bohannan announced last week she is taking on Miller-Meeks for a third time in hopes of flipping the seat in the 2026 midterms.

The election will likely become one of the most competitive races as Democrats aim to regain control of the House, particularly if Trump's falling approval rating fuels a 2018-style "blue wave."

What To Know

Politico reported a new poll of the district showing Bohannan with an early lead over the incumbent Republican. The internal poll was conducted by Public Policy Polling and commissioned by the House Majority PAC.

Bohannan received 43 percent support to 39 percent for Miller-Meeks, while 18 percent were undecided.

Astronaut Democrat Moonwalks into Chaotic Race

Introduction:

(Daily Caller) Terry Virts, a retired NASA astronaut and self-described “common sense Democrat,” announced Monday that he is running in the 2026 Texas Senate race — which already includes a heated showdown between the Republican incumbent and his primary challenger.

After making an analogy to his experience in space, Virts vowed that “down here, [President Donald] Trump’s chaos must be stopped,” in a video announcement he posted to X early Monday. The former International Space Station (ISS) commander also took a dig at fellow Texas Senate candidate Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the video — while appearing to ignore Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn, the incumbent who has been consistently trailing Paxton in polling by wide margins.

The astronaut’s video called Paxton “corrupt,” adding that “MAGA wants” the Texas Attorney General “in the Senate.” Following corruption allegations against Paxton, the Texas House of Representatives impeached him in 2023 — however, the Texas Senate acquitted him later that year.

Still, Virts’ announcement did not even acknowledge Cornyn, the current holder of the Senate seat he is seeking, who lags behind in polls. Trump has yet to make an endorsement in the Republican primary.

Virts, in his announcement video, also seemed to criticize his own party’s Senate leader, Chuck Schumer — an apparent tactic presently employed by other Democratic Senate candidates running in key races. The astronaut described “leadership” as “MIA,” while simultaneously showing Schumer chanting, “We will win.”

Democratic Arkansas State Senator Announces Bid for Governor

Introduction:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas state Sen. Fred Love announced Monday he's seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders next year.

Love, who represents a Little Rock district, said he was running “because I believe Arkansas works best when it works for all of us.”

Love has served in the state Senate since 2023 and before that had served six terms in the state House. As part of his announcement, Love said he will campaign on an economic development plan that included expanded access to startup capital, infrastructure, and grants for small businesses.

“We must stop measuring progress only by what happens in a few cities,” Love said in a statement. “Prosperity should be visible in our Delta towns, our Ozark communities, and our Main Streets—not just in spreadsheets.”

Sanders, who served as White House press secretary during President Donald Trump's first term, was first elected governor in 2022. Sanders has more than $3.7 million in the bank for her reelection bid, and her campaign launched a TV ad in January.
