Re: Energy & the Environment News and Discussions
More planet-heating gases to drive us even further and faster towards a second Dark Ages. Yet somehow bizarrely celebrated by economists, and our so-called "leaders" who are TOTALLY driven by short-termist greed.

Data centres to be expanded across UK as concerns mount
15 August 2025
The number of data centres in the UK is set to increase by almost a fifth, according to figures shared with BBC News.
Data centres are giant warehouses full of powerful computers used to run digital services from movie streaming to online banking - there are currently an estimated 477 of them in the UK.
Construction researchers Barbour ABI have analysed planning documents and say that number is set to jump by almost 100, as the growth in artificial intelligence (AI) increases the need for processing power.
The majority are due to be built in the next five years. However, there are concerns about the huge amount of energy and water the new data centres will consume.
Some experts have warned it could drive up prices paid by consumers.

Small modular reactors: Sparking big change in nuclear energy
Small modular reactors promise cleaner power through unparalleled flexibility and convenience.
Small modular reactors (SMRs) provide a smaller, more adaptable alternative to traditional nuclear reactors with the capacity to enhance energy security and reduce carbon emissions globally. Their design enables factory assembly and easy transportation to installation sites, making them ideal for remote locations and contributing to faster, less costly construction projects. This technology's safety features, fuel efficiency, and potential for rural electrification and emergency power supply mark a significant shift in how countries approach clean energy generation, regulatory adaptation, and the nuclear supply chain.

Air pollution from oil and gas is causing 91,000 premature deaths and hundreds of thousands of health issues across the United States annually, with Black, Asian, Native American and Hispanic groups consistently the most affected, finds a major new study led by researchers at UCL and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI).
The research, published in Science Advances, is the first to comprehensively quantify the health impacts of outdoor air pollution across all stages of the US oil and gas lifecycle, from extraction to end-use (cars, power plants), as well as to analyze the associated racial and ethnic disparities in exposure and health burden.
In addition, the researchers found that 10,350 pre-term births and 216,000 new cases of childhood asthma per year were attributable to oil and gas air pollution, as well as 1,610 lifetime cancers across the US.
