OpenAI is launching the Sora app, its own TikTok competitor, alongside the Sora 2 model

On Tuesday, OpenAI announced the release of Sora 2, an audio and video generator to succeed last year’s Sora. Along with the model, the company also launched a linked social app called Sora, where users can be able to generate videos of themselves and their friends to share on a TikTok-style algorithmic feed. OpenAI’s work on a new social platform was previously reported by Wired.

While we haven’t been able to test the invite-only app and Sora 2 model ourselves yet, OpenAI has shared impressive examples. In particular, Sora 2 is better at following the laws of physics, making the videos more realistic. OpenAI’s public clips depict a beach volleyball game, skateboard tricks, gymnastics routines, and cannonball jumps from a diving board, among others.

“Prior video models are overoptimistic — they will morph objects and deform reality to successfully execute upon a text prompt,” OpenAI wrote in a blog post. “For example, if a basketball player misses a shot, the ball may spontaneously teleport to the hoop. In Sora 2, if a basketball player misses a shot, it will rebound off the backboard.”

Sora hit 1M downloads faster than ChatGPT

After OpenAI’s video-generating app Sora surged to the No. 1 position on the U.S. App Store, it has now, technically, experienced a bigger first week than ChatGPT on iOS, according to new data from app intelligence provider Appfigures. Its estimates show that Sora saw 627,000 iOS downloads in its first seven days of availability, compared with ChatGPT’s 606,000 iOS downloads during its first week.

Shortly after the publication of this article, OpenAI’s head of Sora, Bill Peebles, announced that Sora reached a million downloads (across platforms, not just iOS) in under five days. He said that was faster than ChatGPT, despite Sora being in invite-only mode.

“Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases,” Altman writes in his post on X.
as far as I know people are still going bonkers and able to access to 4o, so...cap

OpenAI launches an AI-powered browser: ChatGPT Atlas
Maxwell Zeff

https://techcrunch.com/2025/10/21/opena ... gpt-atlas/
OpenAI announced Tuesday the launch of its AI-powered browser, ChatGPT Atlas, a major step in the company’s quest to unseat Google as the main way people find information online.

The company says Atlas will first roll out on macOS, with support for Windows, iOS, and Android coming soon. OpenAI says the product will be available to all free users at launch.

Browsers have quickly become the AI industry’s next battleground. While Google Chrome has long dominated the space, there’s a sense that AI chatbots and agents are fundamentally changing how people get work done online. A handful of startups have tried to capture this by launching AI-powered browsers of their own, such as Perplexity’s Comet and The Browser Company’s Dia. Google and Microsoft have also tried to update Chrome and Edge, respectively, with AI-powered features to make their legacy products stand out.

I sincerely doubt OAI is going to care about potential legal trouble. Their whole existence is based on fair use.

OpenAI Restructures to Become a More Traditional For-Profit Company

Oct. 28, 2025
Updated 2:21 p.m. ET

OpenAI said on Tuesday that it had adopted a new for-profit structure, a long-sought change that could allow the business to operate like a more traditional company while it raises the billions of dollars it needs to develop artificial intelligence.

The widely anticipated move was considered one of the keys to the future of OpenAI. It will allow the maker of the popular ChatGPT chatbot to raise new funds like any other company and potentially sets the stage for a blockbuster initial public offering on Wall Street.

The shift also firmly establishes OpenAI as one of the tech industry’s standard-bearers in the A.I. boom, allowing the San Francisco company to compete on more solid footing with giants like Google, Amazon and Meta.

For more than 18 months, Sam Altman, the high-profile chief executive of OpenAI, and his colleagues have been trying to rework OpenAI’s unorthodox structure, which blends a nonprofit with a for-profit company. The announcement on Tuesday offers some clarity about how the influential A.I. company, which was founded 10 years ago, will operate.

OpenAI said in a blog post that it had become a public benefit corporation, or P.B.C., which is a for-profit corporation designed to create public and social good. OpenAI rivals like Anthropic and xAI, which is owned by Elon Musk, use a similar structure.

AWS and OpenAI announce multi-year strategic partnership

November 03, 2025

Today, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and OpenAI announced a multi-year, strategic partnership that provides AWS’s world-class infrastructure to run and scale OpenAI’s core artificial intelligence (AI) workloads starting immediately. Under this new $38 billion agreement, which will have continued growth over the next seven years, OpenAI is accessing AWS compute comprising hundreds of thousands of state-of-the-art NVIDIA GPUs, with the ability to expand to tens of millions of CPUs to rapidly scale agentic workloads. AWS has unusual experience running large-scale AI infrastructure securely, reliably, and at scale–with clusters topping 500K chips. AWS's leadership in cloud infrastructure combined with OpenAI's pioneering advancements in generative AI will help millions of users continue to get value from ChatGPT.

The rapid advancement of AI technology has created unprecedented demand for computing power. As frontier model providers seek to push their models to new heights of intelligence, they are increasingly turning to AWS due to the performance, scale, and security they can achieve. OpenAI will immediately start utilizing AWS compute as part of this partnership, with all capacity targeted to be deployed before the end of 2026, and the ability to expand further into 2027 and beyond.

The infrastructure deployment that AWS is building for OpenAI features a sophisticated architectural design optimized for maximum AI processing efficiency and performance. Clustering the NVIDIA GPUs—both GB200s and GB300s—via Amazon EC2 UltraServers on the same network enables low-latency performance across interconnected systems, allowing OpenAI to efficiently run workloads with optimal performance. The clusters are designed to support various workloads, from serving inference for ChatGPT to training next generation models, with the flexibility to adapt to OpenAI's evolving needs.
