TOKYO (AP) — A powerful 7. 6-magnitude earthquake struck late Monday off northern Japan, triggering a tsunami of up to 70 centimeters (27 inches) in Pacific coast communities and warnings of potentially higher surges, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said. ... Several people were injured, media reports said.

The quake struck at about 11:15 p.m. (1415 GMT) in the Pacific Ocean about 80 kilometers (50 miles) off the coast of Aomori, the northernmost prefecture of Japan’s main Honshu island, the agency said.

A tsunami of 70 centimeters was measured in Kuji port in Iwate prefecture, just south of Aomori, and tsunami levels of up to 50 centimeters struck other coastal communities in the region, the agency said.

The agency issued an alert for potential tsunami surges of up to 3 meters (10 feet) in some areas, and Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara urged residents to immediately head to higher ground or take shelter inside buildings or evacuation centers until the alert is lifted.

A 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Causes Small Tsunami Waves Off Northeastern Japan
By Andrew Zinin
December 12, 2025

Introduction:
(Phys.org) A 6.9 magnitude earthquake shook northeastern Japan and caused small tsunami waves but no apparent damage Friday, days after a stronger quake in the same region.

Friday's quake occurred off the east coast of Aomori prefecture, in the north of Honshu, the main Japanese island, at a depth of 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) at 11:44 a.m., according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, which issued a tsunami advisory that was lifted about two hours later.

Small waves were reported in Hokkaido and Aomori prefectures, but no serious damage or injuries were reported.

The quake followed a 7.5 magnitude earthquake Monday that caused injuries, light damage and a small tsunami on Japan's Pacific coast.

At least 34 people were injured in that quake, power was knocked out temporarily in places, and tsunami waves more than 2 feet (0.6 meters) above tide levels were measured in Kuji port in Iwate prefecture.

Big Earthquake Strikes Papua New Guinea
By Shane Croucher
December 22 , 2025

Introduction:
(Newsweek) A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, about 26 miles northeast of the town of Goroka in the Eastern Highlands province.

The quake hit at a depth of around 68 miles, the USGS said, at 10:31 a.m. UTC (5:31 a.m. ET)

There was a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses, meaning there is a low likelihood of either due to the remoteness of the region, despite the earthquake’s strength.

It occurred along the Australia-Pacific plate’s western boundary, at the “slow southward-verging subduction of the Pacific plate north of New Guinea at the New Guinea trench,” according to the USGS’s regional information
