New Poll Shows Kamala Harris is Within Striking Distance of Donald Trump in Iowa

Introduction:

(Newsweek) Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris is closing the gap with former President Donald Trump in Iowa, with new polling showing her down by just 4 points in the red-leaning state.

Trump, the GOP's presidential nominee, handily won Iowa in 2016 by nearly 10 points, and again in 2020 by more than 8 points. A June poll in Iowa showed President Joe Biden, who had seen his approval rating hit historic lows, trailing Trump by a whopping 18 points.

With Biden's unprecedented decision to bow out of the race and endorse his vice president in late July, Democrats have seen dramatic swings in the polls. While the race remains close, Harris leads in many national polls while swing state polls show her narrowly ahead, tied or only slightly behind Trump. Polls have shown her closing the gap with Trump, particularly compared with Biden, in several conservative states.

Now, new polling published Sunday morning by Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll shows Harris with 43 percent compared to Trump's 47 percent. The margin of error is 3.8 points and the survey polled 656 likely voters from September 8 to 11.

Pennsylvania Court Rejects Cornel West's Bid to Get on Ballot and Clears Way for Mail Voting

(ABC News) HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Pennsylvania's Supreme Court on Monday upheld a lower court ruling that rejected a bid to get independent presidential candidate Cornel West on the ballot for the November election in the battleground state.

The courts sided with the secretary of state’s office under Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro in rejecting West’s candidacy paperwork. The decision also sets in motion the process for counties to start printing, testing and sending out mail-in ballots to voters who requested one ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

Within hours of the court's decision, Secretary of State Al Schmidt certified the ballot for counties.

“Counties can now prepare their ballots to be printed, then begin sending mail ballots to voters who have requested one as soon as they are printed,” Schmidt said in a statement.

The court case had been among a raft of partisan legal maneuvering around third-party candidates, as backers of Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris had aimed to derail third-party candidates who might siphon away support — or to help others who might hurt their opponent.

caltrek’s comment: It is important to note that the West campaign “lacked the required affidavits for 14 of West’s 19 presidential electors.” Some may consider this an unfair technicality, yet there does need to be a reasonable process for establishing electors.

Regarding polls showing Harris has a decisive lead in the popular vote: Wow! Trump is toast

Not necessarily. First, the poll in question could be an outlier. Second, Harris could win the popular vote and still lose in the electoral college.

Harris seems to be piling up an enormous advantage in a lot of blue states, yet a lot of purple states (swing states that could determine the outcome in the electoral election) remain a toss-up with neither candidate gaining an advantage beyond the polling margin of error.

Right now, Harris is in the better position, but Trump could still prevail. Another factor is if Trump succeeds in forcing some states to not count some of the votes that are cast for Harris. It could get very ugly.

Ted Cruz Touted the Endorsement of an Activist Who Supported Killing “Abortionists”

(Mother Jones) In 2015, as Sen. Ted Cruz mounted a competitive presidential campaign and courted the religious right ahead of the Iowa caucuses, the Texas Republican touted the support of a controversial anti-abortion crusader.

“I am grateful to receive the endorsement of Troy Newman,” Cruz said. “He has served as a voice for the unborn for over 25 years, and works tirelessly every day for the pro-life cause. We need leaders like Troy Newman in this country who will stand up for those who do not have a voice.”

Newman wasn’t just any anti-abortion activist: He was, and is, the leader of Operation Rescue—a group that in 1991 held weeks-long protests at the abortion clinic of George Tiller, who was later assassinated by an anti-abortion extremist. Moreover, Newman has claimed that extreme weather was God’s punishment for America’s tolerance for abortion and gay rights; he also co-wrote a book that endorsed the execution of abortion providers.

Nearly a decade after the failed presidential bid, Cruz is locked in a tough reelection fight with Democratic Rep. Colin Allred, a former NFL player. The rollback of abortion rights has become a major issue in the Texas contest, as it has nationally, and the two-term senator has been notably quiet on the subject of late. It is a marked contrast from the 2016 presidential election, when Cruz sought to distinguish himself in the presidential contest as an uncompromising defender of the “pro-life” movement.

While other GOP candidates shared similar beliefs in 2016, Cruz argued he was better at proving his devotion to the cause. Ahead of the Iowa caucuses that year, he announced a “Pro-Lifers for Cruz” coalition of 17,000-plus members. “The question we ought to ask is, don’t tell me that you’re pro-life. Show me. When have you stood up and fought to defend the right to life?” Cruz said before the critical first-in-the-nation nominating contest
