Biden set to name Julie Chavez Rodriguez as 2024 campaign manager
Source: CBS News
President Biden is set to name Julie Chavez Rodriguez, a senior West Wing official and longtime Democratic Party activist, to manage his reelection campaign, three people familiar with the ongoing deliberations tell CBS News.

Chavez Rodriguez currently serves as a senior adviser and assistant to the president — among the highest staff positions in the West Wing — and director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, which makes her responsible for outreach to mayors, county executives and governors, especially regarding implementation of the Biden administration's agenda and in response to natural or other large-scale disasters.

Those familiar with the ongoing deliberations about the reelection campaign said Sunday that several key staffing and operational decisions remain to be made and that while the campaign is expected to launch with a video message on Tuesday, the date could slide if these key appointments are not yet made.

The president has been spending the weekend at Camp David with First Lady Jill Biden and other senior aides sorting out the finishing touches of the campaign. The White House and Democratic National Committee did not respond to requests for comment. Chavez Rodriguez did not respond to requests for comment.

Kyrsten Sinema Has a Net Favorability of -23, Per New Statewide Poll
A new poll out of Arizona by a well-trusted, independent national pollster, Public Policy Polling, shows that Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I) stands to lose re-election badly in virtually any potential matchup this November and is deeply unpopular among voters.

The survey results, first obtained by Jezebel via an internal Ruben Gallego campaign memo, show that just 27 percent of voters in the state view Sinema favorably and want her to run again, compared to 50 percent of Arizonans who view her unfavorably and 54 percent who say she shouldn’t run again. Rep. Gallego (D-Ariz.), her likely Democratic challenger, has a net positive favorability, with 39 percent of voters approving of him and 28 percent disapproving.

In any likely three-way matchup among Sinema, Gallego and whatever Republican candidate wins their primary, Sinema appears to have virtually no chance of winning. If the GOP candidate is election denier Kari Lake, for example, the new PPP survey shows that Gallego would pull in 42 percent of the vote, Lake 35 percent, and Sinema just 14 percent. The numbers are similar if you plug Jim Lamon or Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb in as the Republican candidate.

Sinema is trailing Gallego in terms of fundraising as well. She raised just $2.1M in Q1 compared to Gallego’s $3.7M, and just 0.3 percent of her donations were from small dollar donors, according to NBC News. Roughly a third of her haul came from just five companies, including hedge funds and private equity firms, whereas 98 percent of Gallego’s donations were from donors who pitched in less than $100.

GOP Megadonor Says DeSantis Doesn't Return Phone Calls
New York billionaire John Catsimatidis is ruling out supporting Ron DeSantis for president in the 2024 election, telling the Washington Examiner that the Republican Florida governor “doesn’t even return his phone calls.”

Ron DeSantis is set to jump into the 2024 presidential fray in mid-May
TALLAHASSEE — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is poised to jump into the presidential fray as soon as mid-May, four GOP operatives familiar with the conversations told NBC News.

One of the sources emphasized that it would be an exploratory committee rather, with the official launch coming soon after.

Some of his backers are urging him to declare as early as May 11, in an effort to counter the creeping national narrative that former President Donald Trump is the overwhelming frontrunner for the 2024 GOP nomination. Others in the governor’s orbit, however, have argued that that date would be too soon, according to two of those sources. All emphasized, however, that mid-May is the target.

DeSantis has long been viewed as Trump’s strongest Republican challenger in 2024, traveling far outside Florida in recent weeks to raise his profile. But some of DeSantis’ allies have started to question his readiness as his poll numbers have lagged, and he has gone through a series of self-inflicted wounds.

Haley says Disney can move to her home state after it sues DeSantis
GOP presidential candidate and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) suggested on Wednesday that Disney could move to her home state, after the company sued Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) for allegedly harming its business operations.

“Hey @Disney, my home state will happily accept your 70,000+ jobs if you want to leave Florida,” Haley tweeted. “We’ve got great weather, great people, and it’s always a great day in South Carolina!”

“SC’s not woke, but we’re not sanctimonious about it either,” she added in an apparent reference to former President Trump’s “DeSanctimonious” nickname for the Florida governor.

The Walt Disney Company sued DeSantis and other state officials on Wednesday, claiming that it was subjected to a “targeted campaign of government retaliation” as punishment for “protected speech.”

I think Trump is running away with it. A literal criminal is going to be running against Biden in 2024.

Wow. I had been skeptical of the wisdom of challenging Sinema. Clearly, that can be done while still retaining the Senate seat by a progressive. In (formerly?) red state Arizona no less!

Tim Scott sets May 22 announcement for 2024 presidential bid
Associated Press
https://apnews.com/article/tim-scott-pr ... a5a989ec75

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina is nearly ready to reveal his decision on entering the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, saying Sunday that he would make an announcement on May 22.

Scott didn’t definitively say that he’ll be announcing his official campaign, but he told those gathered at a downtown Charleston school during a town hall that he would be coming out with his decision at an event in about three weeks in North Charleston, which he calls home.

“It is time to make the final step,” Scott said to a room packed with cheering supporters, as well as a film crew, which a longtime Scott adviser said was gathering “content” for future use, a flick at a potential launch or campaign ad video.

“We will have a major announcement,” Scott added.
