Attacks target polio teams in east Afghanistan, 5 killed
Source: AP

Gunmen on Tuesday targeted an anti-polio drive in eastern Afghanistan, killing at least five members of two vaccination teams in separate attacks, officials said.

Along with the five killed, at least four members of the polio vaccination teams were wounded, said Dr. Jan Mohammad, who coordinates the anti-polio drive for the country’s east. Khogyani called the attacks cowardly, adding that two of the wounded were in critical condition.

Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan are the only two remaining countries in the world where polio is endemic, after Nigeria was last year declared free of the virus.

In March, the Islamic State group said it shot and killed three women who were part of a polio vaccination team, also in Jalalabad, the capital of Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province.

Though not uncommon in Afghanistan, attacks on polio vaccination teams are more frequent in Pakistan, where the Pakistani Taliban and other militants regularly stage attacks on polio teams and security forces escorting them. They also target vaccination centers and health workers, claiming that anti-polio drives are part of an alleged Western conspiracy to sterilize children or collect intelligence.

Last week, two policemen who were providing security to polio vaccinators were shot and killed in northwest Pakistan.

Brazen shoplifter loads up at Walgreens in front of security, leaves on bike
https://nypost.com/2021/06/15/thief-sho ... s-on-bike/
By Jorge Fitz-Gibbon

A brazen shoplifter was caught on video stuffing items into a garbage bag inside a San Francisco Walgreens and then pedaling off on his bike — in front of a security guard who simply recorded the theft on his phone.

The shocking footage, posted on Twitter by KGO-TV reporter Lyanne Melendez, shows the unidentified thief filling up on stolen goods as two people — one apparently a security guard — stand in the aisle with their phones out.

The crook then hops on his bike and pedals past the pair, with the guard making a failed attempt to grab the bag before the man bikes to the automatic front door and takes off.
This is what weakening our police and legalizing everything for the criminal has done to some of our cities. Pretty soon this is going to drive all the stores out of the city. it is sick.

"Weakening our police"

The American police is practically the strongest military on Earth. What do you want, for them to become 40k Space Marines? The whole reason why people are protesting them is because they have a nasty tendency to act like Gestapo agents (which rings of hypocrisy to the rest of the world when we call ourselves the "Land of the Free") and the reason why criminals are so brazen is because tens of millions of people are trapped between poverty and death— absolutely not helped by a pandemic and massive recession further, so why bother caring what happens to themselves?

We ought to have doubled-down on the welfare state. People wouldn't be stealing so much shit if they weren't desperate for the basics (actually, I know EXACTLY what should've happened in America, but that ship has sailed). Making the police even stronger and more militarized is only going to make the problem worse and make communities weaker because now everyone's living in fear. Like, the absolute most ass-backwards way to resolve the problem. Like if you have a bad flu or COVID and you say "I know what'll make me better: chemotherapy."

But I wouldn't expect anything less from Americans, who have a punishment & retribution fetish.
Image
Fun fact: crime was VASTLY worse in America when the left was true, but for reasons you wouldn't immediately expect. There was a brief period when crime rates crashed and the police weren't hypermilitarized. We tend to think of that time pretty fondly.

I mean zero disrespect to you, though.
And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future

1 dead and 12 injured in series of Arizona shootings
Source: msn.com

Tori B. Powell 35 mins ago

One person was killed and 12 more were injured Thursday after a gunman went on a shooting spree across cities in the West Valley area of Arizona, police said. A suspect has been taken into custody, and officials said they believe he is the only shooter.

At around 11 a.m. local time, police officers in Peoria, Arizona, responded to reports of a person in a white SUV who had fired at another vehicle, Sergeant Brandon Sheffert of the Peoria Police Department said during a preliminary press briefing on Thursday. Over the next hour and a half, the suspect fired shots at seven more locations before he was taken into custody, Sheffert said.

The suspect was taken into custody around 12:42 p.m. local time in Surprise, Arizona, and "complied completely" with law enforcement, Sheffert said. He has not yet been named, but police said he is an adult male. Sheffert said a weapon was recovered from the suspect's vehicle.

Four people were shot, including the deceased victim, and nine other people were injured. Police did not specify how the other nine were injured, but said all 12 of the other victims are expected to recover. Multiple hospitals in the area were placed on a temporary lockdown as a result of the shootings, but it has since been lifted. ..................................

Driver rams cyclists in Arizona race, critically injuring 6
Source: AP

SHOW LOW, Ariz. (AP) — A driver in a pickup truck plowed into bicyclists competing in a community road race in Arizona on Saturday, critically injuring several riders before police chased down the driver and shot him outside a nearby hardware store, police said.

Six cyclists were taken to a hospital in critical condition after the crash in the mountain town of Show Low, about a three-hour drive northeast of Phoenix, police said. At least two others went to the hospital themselves.

The suspect, a 35-year-old man, also was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. The identities of the suspect and victims were not immediately released.

A Ford pickup truck struck the bicyclists about 7:25 a.m. in downtown Show Low during the annual 58-mile (93-kilometer) Bike the Bluff race, then fled, police said. Officers pursued the driver and tried to stop him before he was shot, authorities said.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/juneteenth-c ... 06373.html
Days after President Joe Biden signed a bill recognising Juneteenth as a federal holiday, the country recorded a spate of gun violence across different states during its celebration over the weekend.

Violent incidents related to Juneteenth were reported in California, South Carolina, Michigan and Colorado, while Louisiana and Philadelphia recorded unrelated incidents of shooting. In all, at least seven people were killed and 21 injured in gun violence over the weekend.

The shooting in Oakland, California occurred around 6.30pm about a mile from Lake Merritt Amphitheater where hundreds had gathered throughout the day to commemorate 19 June, 1865, as the day when roughly 2,000 Union Army soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that enslaved African Americans were now free.

Suspect guarding illegal marijuana grow shoots at deputy's patrol car

It happened on May 27, 2021, at about 8:35 pm, when a deputy from the Barstow Sheriff’s Station responded to a call for service in the 46000 block of Tonopah Street in Newberry Springs. Sheriff’s officials said the deputy was in the 47000 block of Holcomb Trail when he discovered a possible illegal marijuana cultivation operation.

“As the deputy made a U-turn, the suspect, Adolfo Sanchez-Morales, shot at him striking the patrol vehicle. The bullet went through the driver’s side of the windshield and exited the front passenger side window,” stated a sheriff’s news release.

Multiple law enforcement agencies from various departments responded to assist in the search and the suspect was located hiding in the desert. Sheriff’s officials said a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun was found nearby where he buried it.

There are over 500 active outdoor marijuana grows in San Bernardino County. Residents, off-roaders and recreationalists should use caution and avoid the area of illegal outdoor marijuana grows as they pose a significant safety risk. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is working expediently as possible to address the issue.

Florida man pulls gun at Starbucks over cream cheese

by Associated Press
9:40 PM EDT, Tue June 22, 2021
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — An angry Florida man pulled a gun on a drive-thru worker because they forgot the cream cheese with his bagel, according to Miami Gardens Police. The employee just happened to be the daughter of the police chief.

Police said the man became angry at a Starbucks drive-thru when they messed up his order earlier this week. He returned to the window, screaming at the employee. She asked whether he had paid for the cream cheese, at which point he became enraged and pulled out a gun, according to an arrest report.

Chief Delma Noel-Pratt told CBS4 that the experience traumatized her 23-year-old daughter. The chief’s daughter told police that the man did not point the gun at her, but that she feared he would hurt her if she didn’t give him the cream cheese.

“She felt in fear of her life,” Noel-Pratt said. ”It was upsetting to me to know that someone would go to that extreme not having cream cheese on his bagel.”

The customer blamed the Chinese restaurant owner for the pandemic.
By Mairead McArdle

Jun 29, 2021 DailyWire.com

A Buckhead restaurant owner said she was the victim of an alleged hate crime this week when a customer sent her racist anti-Asian messages and threatened her.

Tse-chih Chang and her husband own the Grand China Restaurant, which they opened in Buckhead in 1978.

“We serve on snow days, rainy days, and all the holidays. We did our best to serve the community,” Chang told Fox5Atlanta.

The trouble started when a woman asked to cancel a delivery order because it was running late, according to Chang.

“You cancel the order, that’s fine. We respect that. but it’s going to take a while to give you a refund. We’ll give you a refund, don’t worry about it,” Chang said.

32 shot, 4 fatally, Thursday in Chicago
By Joanie Lum
CHICAGO - On the day Chicago’s top cop touted declining crime numbers, the city was hit with one of its most violent days of the year: four killed, 28 wounded, including three young children who were seriously injured.

A 1-month-old was shot in the head in a mass shooting in Englewood, scene of another mass shooting weeks ago that killed five people and wounded three others.

An 8-year-old girl was shot in the arm as she sat in her home in Roseland. Two women on the porch were also shot and one of them died.

A 9-year-old girl was shot in the head as she sat in a car in Grand Crossing. A Chicago police officer drove her to the hospital, where relatives asked why authorities can’t do more to protect children.

Stop Blaming Crime Rates on Defunding the Police
by Nathalie Baptiste
July, 20, 2021

https://www.motherjones.com/crime-justi ... he-police/

Conclusion:
(Mother Jones) Part of what makes the conversation about crime rates and police budgets frustrating for experts is that in the same way, it’s impossible to demonstrate that defunding the police exacerbates crime, the reverse is also true: We don’t have much evidence indicating that hiring more police officers or giving them more resources will reduce crime. “When crime goes up, the first reaction is we need more cops, more money, more resources,” says Kubrin. “But there is not a linear relationship, simply add more cops and stir is not a solution that works across the board.” She stresses that it’s the quality not the quantity of police officers that can make a difference in communities.

But no matter how much evidence, or lack thereof, exists for the protests causing a crime wave, the narrative very easily has taken hold. And that’s for a very specific reason. Local media plays an outsized role in keeping people in a constant state of fear about being victimized, even if the chances are slim. Turn on any evening news program—or I would add to that your local police department’s Twitter feed— and it can feel as if nothing else happened that day but horrible crimes. According to Kubrin, there’s a direct correlation between local news consumption and fear of crime. In turn, politicians and other prominent figures play on this perpetual fear-cycle by singling out whichever boogeyman to blame. One year it’s the “Ferguson effect.” This year, as Fox News TV host Tucker Carlson said on his show in March, it’s the conviction that “when you defund the police, people die.”

For me, the time I spent looking up the police tweet about a local robbery only to end up feeling as if car jackings were happening on every street corner was brief. But for the millions of people who are listening to officials claiming that because police have been defunded violent crime is coming soon to a neighborhood near you, the damage will be long lasting. If the fear mongers are successful, many Americans will trade progress on policing and racial equality for a false sense of security. And that very well may be their intention.

A New ‘Digital Violence’ Platform Maps Dozens of Victims of NSO Group’s Spyware
by Zack Whittaker
July 3, 2021

https://techcrunch.com/2021/07/03/digit ... p-spyware/

Introduction:
(TechCrunch) For the first time, researchers have mapped all the known targets, including journalists, activists, and human rights defenders, whose phones were hacked by Pegasus, a spyware developed by NSO Group.

Forensic Architecture, an academic unit at Goldsmiths, University of London that investigates human rights abuses, scoured dozens of reports from human rights groups, carried out open-source research and interviewed dozens of the victims themselves to reveal over a thousand data points, including device infections, which show relations and patterns between digital surveillance carried out by NSO’s government customers, and the real-world intimidation, harassment and violence that the victims are also subject to.

By mapping out these data points on a bespoke platform, the researchers can show how nation-states, which use Pegasus to spy on their victims, also often target other victims in their networks and are entangled with assaults, arrests, and disinformation campaigns against the targets but also their families, friends, and colleagues.

Although the thousand-plus data points only present a portion of the overall use of Pegasus by governments, the project aims to provide researchers and investigators the tools and data of NSO’s activities worldwide, which the spyware maker goes to great lengths to keep out of the public eye.

Israel-based NSO Group develops Pegasus, a spyware that allows its government customers near-unfettered access to a victim’s device, including their personal data and their location. NSO has repeatedly declined to name its customers but reportedly has government contracts in at least 45 countries, said to include Rwanda, Israel, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates — all of which have been accused of human rights abuses — as well as Western nations, like Spain.
Don't mourn, organize.

https://www.cp24.com/mobile/news/man-ch ... -1.5493834

A man has been charged with the alleged killing of a Toronto police officer Friday.

Umar Zameer, 31, was charged with first-degree murder after appearing in court at Old City Hall today.

The officer died after being "intentionally" struck by a vehicle near City Hall overnight, Chief James Ramer said.

“It is with profound sadness that I confirm the death of Const. Jeffrey Northrup of 52 Division,” Ramer said while providing an update on the situation Friday morning.

Ramer said Northrup was responding to a call in the parking garage located underneath City Hall, near Queen and Bay streets, just after midnight when he was hit.

Northrup was rushed to hospital where he was later pronounced dead, Ramer said.
