FEMA Chief Issues Dire Warning on Hurricane Disinformation
by Sara Fischer and Andrew Freedman
October 8, 2024

Introduction:
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) warned Tuesday that falsehoods related to hurricanes are significantly impeding their response efforts, and putting hundreds of thousands of lives at risk as Hurricane Milton barrels toward Florida and others pick up the pieces from Hurricane Helene.

Why it matters: Amid one ongoing natural disaster, and with another on the horizon, the federal agency took time from preparation and response efforts to caution the public about rampant misinformation.

Former President Trump and others in the GOP have amplified claims that FEMA's response to Helene was biased against Republicans and that money for those impacted by the storm was diverted to housing for illegal immigrants.

On Tuesday, FEMA launched a fact-checking page regarding its storm response to Hurricane Helene.

Driving the news: Tuesday's press briefing was dedicated specifically to combatting mis- and disinformation.

caltrek: Deliberately spreading misinformation that hampers emergency response should be subject to criminal prosecution. This is not an issue of prior restraint, but rather one of holding individuals responsible for the damage they are doing to the storm recovery effort. Freedom of speech in the U.S. is not absolute, it is just more liberal than most other countries. Such prosecutions would not destroy that superiority. Of course, that the speech is made with reckless disregard for the truth and has had a negative impact on the recovery effort would have to be proven.

Climate Advocates Demand Hurricane Town Hall with Harris and Trump
by Julia Conley
October 10, 2024

Introduction:
(Common Dreams) As families mourned the deaths of hundreds of people from Hurricane Helene and Floridians began to take stock of the damage done by Hurricane Milton on Thursday, climate advocates called on major news networks to hold a town hall focused on the growing threat of extreme weather—and demand answers from the two major presidential candidates regarding what they plan to do about it.

Campaigners with the Sunrise Movement in Florida and North Carolina said CNN, ABC, NBC, or CBS should host a "Hurricane Town Hall" with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and former Republican President Donald Trump in the latter state before early voting starts there on October 17.

Manu Ivan, an 18-year-old Sunrise member from Orlando, Florida, noted that—as his group demanded—in the vice presidential debate earlier this month, CBS moderators asked Republican candidate Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) and Democratic contender Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota how they would confront the climate emergency.

"We deserve the opportunity to hear from Harris and Trump about what they will do to take on Big Oil and fight for people like me who are scared about what our state will look like when I'm older," said Ivan.

Sunrise said the town hall would present an opportunity for questions about Trump's promise to oil executives earlier this year that he would swiftly unravel climate progress made by President Joe Biden and expand drilling if the industry donated $1 billion to his campaign.

Toxic Lies are Surging in the Wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton
by Miles Bryan and Sean Rameswaram
October 10, 2024

Introduction:
(Vox) Hurricanes Milton and Helene have absolutely devastated large swaths of the United States. But residents who are cleaning out waterlogged homes and businesses have another challenge to their recovery, one that hasn’t let up — viral disinformation.

There’s the rumor that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is limiting payouts to disaster survivors to $750. False, according to a fact-checking page the agency has set up.

What about the one that says FEMA is blocking private planes from landing in affected areas to deliver supplies? Also false.

These rumors have turned political, with some Republican politicians, including former President Donald Trump, repeating them to large audiences. As FEMA administrator Deanne Criswell said recently, the swirl of misinformation is “absolutely the worst that I have ever seen.”

“Misinformation is not uncommon in disasters. They come on fast. People see things that don’t end up being true,” Juliette Kayyem, a crisis management expert at Harvard who served as the assistant secretary of Homeland Security in the Obama administration, told Today, Explained’s Sean Rameswaram. “I think in many ways what we’re experiencing now is purposeful lying.” Kayyem is also the author of the book The Devil Never Sleeps: Learning to Live in an Age of Disasters.

FEMA Makes "Operational Adjustments" in Hurricane Response as Threats Spike
by Rebecca Falconer and Andrew Freedman
October 13, 2024

Introduction:
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) made "operational adjustments" in its Hurricane Helene response in North Carolina following safety concerns, a spokesperson said Sunday.

The big picture: The Ashe County Sheriff's Office in northwestern N.C. said on Facebook Sunday that FEMA had "paused their process" as a precaution while "they are assessing" threats made in other counties in the state.

• There's been a surge in threats following mis- and disinformation on the federal response to Hurricane Helene.

Context: Conspiracy theories rapidly spread online about aid to communities hit hard by the storm, some of which were amplified by former President Trump.

• FEMA warned last week that the falsehoods significantly impeded response efforts to hurricanes Helene and Milton.
