That implies they KNEW this would cause a negative reaction beforehand. That and they haven't even offered an apology or statement about hearing the feedback. Companies responded more overtly to 100x less controversial things.

The fact they even released Sora at all. Why follow up Gemini 1.5 Pro with a text to video program no one can use, and its bigger advancement is the emergent world model anyway?

The complete lackadaisical reveal of it. It wasn't a big event, and Sam stopped responding to requests within 30 minutes. Even the initial DALL-E 2 rollout at least had a longer tail of fulfilling requests. It's like "Oh, and here's Sora, anyway, we'll leave you alone now, direct all your hate to this P.O. Box"

The call for $7 trillion. Not even for general capital investment but to build chip fabs. Such an absurd number, that's not how even irrational business types speak. He's saying he wants to collect the same money that the 3rd and 4th largest economies combined output in a year, just for AI chips.

And of course the big hooplah months back over Sam leaving and coming back.

It almost feels like they're trying to force regulatory capture to prevent others from catching up because they may have "won" the race so to speak... It may be fleetingly possible they've actually done it and created an interpretable early AGI, but far too early for it to cause any real impacts and far too soon for it to be safe from external forces.

Of course that probably isn't it. I dunno, something really does seem odd about this.

The Apollo project cost about 2.5% of GDP for 10 years (so 25% total) and I doubt the Manhattan project was that much more expensive (assuming it even was more expensive).

Sam is asking for 30% of US GDP right now...

I can't think of a good reason why it isn't ether they have AGI like you mentioned as a possibility above.

They have lots of confidence that they know exactly how to build AGI and plan on doing so.

Im not a business guy but presumably they will probably have to pay back the hypothetical loan with noticeable interest and its not something to be done without extremely good reason.

There could be some other reason to do with a smaller profitable project but I just don't see anyone asking for 7 trillion except for AGI.

Sam is a "eccentric billionaire" type like Elon he enjoys to troll a bit but would he lie about wanting 7 trillion?

Investigation into OpenAI’s Sam Altman resignation closed

Sam Altman is taking back his position on OpenAI’s board of directors. This move also immediately means that the investigation surrounding Altman’s earlier resignation has come to an end.

The investigation is clear on the reason for Altman’s resignation from OpenAI, which was entirely due to a breach of trust with the previous board of directors. Altman was removed from his role as CEO of OpenAI in November 2023 and was required to leave the company immediately. The news came unexpectedly, and the company did not clarify the reason for dismissal. It was only mentioned that Altman had allegedly not been honest with the board, which hindered their work.

Within five days, Altman returned as CEO. This was due to several things: the OpenAI staff turned against the dismissal, as did the CEO of Microsoft and finally also by the co-founder Ilya Sutskever who also helped cause the dismissal.

Following the return of OpenAI’s CEO, an investigation was launched into the reason for dismissal. That’s where the brevity of the resignation led. The investigation now concludes that the breach of trust really counted as the reason. “The dismissal was not a necessity as a result of the CEO’s behavior. The resignation had nothing to do with concerns about product safety, the speed at which OpenAI is evolving, or financial accounts,” the investigation says. The investigation thus contradicts rumours that Altman did not share a breakthrough in artificial general intelligence (AGI) with the board. AGI is technology with the same level of intelligence as humans. As to the specific reason for Altman’s resignation, the investigation does not shed much light.
