UK monkeypox cases double to 20 - Sajid Javid

1 hour ago

Health Secretary Sajid Javid has said another 11 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in the UK.

The new cases come on top of the nine already identified in the country.

Mr Javid said "most cases" are mild. He has now updated G7 health ministers on the spread of the virus, which has been detected in six other countries outside Central and West Africa.

"I can confirm we have procured further doses of vaccines that are effective against monkeypox," he said.

There isn't a specific vaccine for the monkeypox virus, but a smallpox jab does offer some good protection since the two viruses are quite similar.

It is known if monkeypox is airborne yet or is the virus primarily an STD?

Well, a controlled lab study confirmed monkeypox can stay aloft in the air for at least 90 hours.

That is very unfortunate to hear. I hope that study proves wrong, we should know by intuition for sure within a month or so depending on how much it spreads.

Looking at the CDC’s page it looks like it causes a cough too ;-;

We should understand that Monkeypox isn’t like Covid-19. From an article published July 8, 2022, that was recently cited in Vox:
(National Library of Medicine) Smallpox vaccination with vaccinia, a first-generation vaccine, also yields long-lasting immunity, with an efficacy of 80–95%. The current recommendation for revaccination is every 10 years, although longitudinal studies suggest that protection may last much longer. Vaccinia is also known to deliver long-lasting immunity against monkeypox, with 85% efficacy. Furthermore, studies of antibody responses to orthopoxvirus species suggest perfect cross-immunity between smallpox and monkeypox.

With the eradication of smallpox, monkeypox appears to emerge as the dominant pox disease in humans. Currently, the epidemic risk for humans is considered to be small

Monkeypox is not considered contagious during its incubation period and asymptomatic monkeypox infection has not been documented. Transmission occurs through fluids secretion, mainly from the respiratory tract or skin lesions. The distinctive symptoms of human monkeypox greatly aid in its early detection and containment.
However,
…with declining immunity to orthopoxvirus species, monkeypox can pose an ever-increasing threat for health security.

Good to know, if the virus spreads further once there's a vaccine we should be safe and it will be easy to identify people who are sick and avoid them.

Good to know our public health officials have learned nothing since COVID. Looks like we are about to have pandemic the sequel in short order.

I'm not pleased with this vaccine thing either. They actually have to produce and distribute vaccines for those to be useful and this could easily spread far and wide by that point.
