Great interview with David Yelland, former editor-in-chief of The Sun newspaper.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"We've run out of talented politicians to run the country."

"This is all about Brexit. It all goes back to Brexit, and that is why we're in this situation. [...] It has effectively weeded out all the talent from the front bench of the Conservative Party. All the smart people who were actually honest were Remainers. The only people who were Brexiters were either idiots, or people who were prepared to compromise what they really thought in order to advance their own career."

...

"Keir Starmer will become the first Prime Minister to be elected in this country without the endorsement of any tabloid. [...] Therefore, he will be free of them. And that is a good thing for democracy."

...

"Starmer is going to get elected – and they're going to have to look at the Single Market in the first term. Because [Labour] will have the same problem as the Tories have got, which is 'How the hell are we going to grow the economy?'."

...

"The whole Brexit thing was a complete and utter scandal."

Here's what nobody explains about the UK's trade deal with NZ: stuff we sell to NZ was already almost tariff-free. Eliminating all remaining tariffs saves only £27 million a year.

But NZ sells lots of agricultural products, and the UK has hefty tariffs on those to protect our market.

Or rather the UK used to. But not any more.

As a result of the trade deal, NZ farmers will be able to send unlimited goods tariff-free after a phase-in period.

And the Tories gave away much more than the EU did. (Via Edwin Hayward on Mastodon)

Britain mulls Swiss-style ties with Brussels
"Government considers Swiss-style ties with EU. Senior government figures are planning to put Britain on the path towards a Swiss-style relationship with the EU."

The move, intended to forge closer economic ties, is likely to infuriate hardline Conservative Brexiteers.

A U-turn from the Tories. There we go. Labour, however, is still trying to make Brexit work! (Sorry it's from the Crimes)
