Police kill axe-wielding man who took 15 passengers hostage on train in Switzerland
6 hours ago

A man who used an axe and knife to seize more than a dozen hostages on a Swiss train has been killed, police said.

Swiss police say a 32-year-old Iranian asylum-seeker was killed and no passengers were injured.

The man took the hostages early Thursday evening and police, alerted by passengers, sealed off the area while the train was stopped in the town of Essert-sous-Champvert, police in the French-speaking Vaud region said Friday.

The man, speaking Farsi and English, demanded that the train engineer join the 15 hostages.

Nearly four hours after the incident began, police stormed the train after trying to negotiate with the man through an interpreter.

Political violence adviser urges new police powers to protect MPs
22 hours ago

Police should get extra powers to tackle protests outside Parliament, the author of a government-commissioned review has urged.

Crossbench peer Lord Walney said MPs needed protecting from "intimidation" that could influence how they vote.

His comments come after Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle cited the threat to politicians in his controversial handling of a debate on Gaza.

It has reignited the heightened debate in recent years over the safety of MPs.

Asked about Lord Walney's recommendations, Home Secretary James Cleverly said he expected police to take action when protesters gathered outside MPs' homes with the aim of "distorting" how they voted.

Haiti violence: Gangs threaten Haiti takeover after mass jailbreak
49 minutes ago

The government of Haiti declared a 72-hour state of emergency on Sunday after armed gangs stormed a major Port-au-Prince prison. At least 12 people were killed and about 3,700 inmates escaped in the jailbreak.

Gang leaders say they want to force the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who had travelled abroad.

The groups aiming to oust him control around 80% of Port-au-Prince.

Gang violence has plagued Haiti for years.

A government statement said two prisons - one in the capital and the other in nearby Croix des Bouquets - were stormed over the weekend.
