I recommend watching a few of Kevin Kelly's videos about the future in multiple chosen topics (one per video), the whole playlist is 38 videos:

He sounds smart and well-reasoned on the future-planning approach, but wouldn't it be wildly affected by the scenarios we come up with? For example different groups of ten hypothetical futures could lead to very different conclusions on the best course of action for the future.
