Probably old tech by now if not at least by 20 years. It still looks cool though cumbersome and yeah probably some other sci fi stuff out there. It seems like anything the excitement is the build up of hearing about this sort of stuff using the simplest of physics (simple being a very loose term) then actually seeing it in action.
