Not a big hip hop listener, but there are a few ways to get me to listen. Have at least one of the four:
• A really good melody. Not much more to elaborate; this is supremely subjective.
• Laid back lo-fi sensibilities. Hence why I love lo-fi.
• Power and aggression. Wu-Tang Clan blew my mind because of how raw their early material was, as was earlier Beastie Boys.
• Bluesy '70s heavy rock guitar work behind the rapping. Not chuggy "jumpdafuckup" nü metal like Limp Bizkit, something more like Rock Box above or early Rage Against the Machine.
The first two and the latter two often work well together to my ears, but there's a lot more of the former than the latter that's actually good.
