Suggestions for London area visit

Hi fellas,
I'll be visiting London for a few days next month, and needs tips from locals or frequent visitors about what to see.
I went to London in 2011 and saw some major sights, but don't remember them well, and had a bad time. Hopefully, this new trip will redeem the city.
I'm also thinking of doing a day trip. Maybe Oxford, Cambridge, or Brighton.
Any advice?
