Tornado Kills Two Arkansas Nursing Home Residents, Traps Dozens Inside
Source: Daily Beast
A tornado killed two residents of an Arkansas nursing home Friday night after wrecking the building and trapping dozens more inside as multiple tornadoes swept several southern states Friday night.

Monette Manor in Northern Arkansas took a direct hit and collapsed with residents still under its roof. Five more people were seriously injured.

A fire station in Samburg, Tennessee, also took a direct hit from a tornado late Friday, with multiple people unable to escape the building, the Obion County Sheriff’s office confirmed to The Daily Beast. Authorities had not yet ascertained whether anyone was killed or injured.

A tornado hit another nursing home and fire station in Trumann, Tennessee later in the evening, causing substantial damage, according to local station KAIT.

Oh boy... the tornado that hit Bowling Green appears to be going up the I65 and now hitting multiple communities... Nightmare... Probably an EF3 but could be EF4...

Also the cell that caused the Quad-State Tornado (Probably EF5) has finally had the warnings dropped. Not clear if it had any tornado drop after Louisville even though it was warned until north of Lexington but it may have dropped from time to time...

Tornado approaching Burns, Tennessee outside of Nashville, confirmed on ground not sure how strong it is... Population 1400... They seemed to remove the tornado warning right as it went over the town. I thought they confirmed it on the ground. However, it might just be a small tornado? It looks like the Bowling Green Tornado (same cell that did the Tennesse-Kentucky tornado) is dying off and not clear there is still a tornado on the ground as it approaches Danville...

At least 50 people are likely dead following a tornado in Kentucky, governor says

Source: CNN
(CNN) - At least 50 people are likely dead after multiple tornadoes barreled through southwestern Kentucky late Friday, according to Gov. Andy Beshear. "We believe our death toll from this event will exceed 50 Kentuckians, probably end up closer to 70 to 100 lost lives," Beshear said at a briefing Saturday morning, calling the storms that hit the state "the most severe tornado event in Kentucky's history."

Preliminary investigations indicate four tornadoes may have hit the state, including one that potentially stayed on the ground for more than 200 miles, Beshear said. Damage has been reported in at least 15 counties stretching across western Kentucky. The worst destruction was in Graves County, he told CNN affiliate WLKY, particularly the town of Mayfield. "It hit Mayfield as hard as just about any town ... has ever been hit."

About 110 people were at a candle factory at the time the tornado hit, and Beshear said, "We believe we'll lose at least dozens of those individuals." "It is a significant, massive disaster event," state emergency management director Michael Dorsett said, adding that search-and-rescue efforts are ongoing and began even as the storms were in the area.

The tornadoes were among a multitude that spawned in the overnight hours Friday as a line of powerful storms ripped through the central US.Mayfield is a city of around 10,000 people, according to the US Census. Buildings struck include the Graves County Courthouse and adjoining jail.

Mayfield doesn't even look like it got the worst of the Quad-State tornado. Damage there looks like solid EF4 with maybe a sprinkling an EF5 there but unlikely.

However, after it hit Mayfield and some other areas it hit the small community of Bremen a community of about 300. And it looks like full on E5 damage here with homes down to the foundations... Reports of at least 10 fatalities in that community alone with more missing and fears the death toll is going to jump...

So for those of you that were not watching last night and not sure which tornado is which I will give you a brief overview of the communities impacted:

Quad-State Tornado Cell (E4, probably EF5 tornado at it's worst spots) that went through AR, MO, TN, KY

Communities impacted, in order...

1. Monette, Arkansas - Pop. 1600ish - Destroyed a nursing home probably EF3-EF4 damage at this point... Killed 2 people here, and injured 80+ more

2. Leachville, Arkansas - Pop. 1900ish - Destroyed several buildings and killed at least 1 person here... Was probably EF3/EF4 when it hit this area...

3. Hayti, Missouri/Carthursersville, Missouri area - Pop 7000ish - (Note: Appears that it missed the communities proper going in between them and impacting the highway. This is where some of the insane radar measurements on the winds were taken... Not sure if they will see a lot of EF5 damage here as there isn't that much infrastructure between these two communities.)

4. Samburg, Tennessee - Population 200ish - Flattened this community - At least 3 deaths reported here so far... Probably EF4 when it hit this area...

5. Mayfield, Kentucky - Population 10,000 - Direct hit on the downtown. Many fatalities expected, 50+ per the governor... EF4 damage seems to be quite prevalent in this area... a few cases of slabs which maybe indicate EF5 but likely high end EF4 as not consistent enough across the area. Many of the fatalities here may be linked to Candle Factory with 100+ workers in it that was wiped clean from it's foundations. Likely going to be the largest loss of life of the outbreak...

6. Benton, Kentucky - Population 4,500 - Not quite a direct hit, but may have hit the hospital as it looked like the vortex just skirted the northwest of the city... No fatalities reported so far. Based on limited images I've seen from the area maybe EF4 type damage in this area, possibly EF5...

7. Cambridge Shores, Kentucky - Population Unclear - Vacation home area... This area got wiped based on images I've seen. Probably EF4 at least... Not sure how many people were in this area and haven't heard of fatalities although missing persons teams are being sent to this area. It is also quite rural.

8. Princeton, Kentucky - Population 6,300 - Clipped the southeast side of this area. Very intense damage likely the first area where EF5 may be quite likely to be found. No word on fatalities here...

9. Dawson Springs, Kentucky - Population 2,700 - Hit this area directly on. Looks like another area where EF4 and EF5 probably possible. Town was smashed. Fatalities reported though number not yet provided...

10. Earlington, Kentucky/Morton's Gap, Kentucky area - Population 4000ish - On radar the tornado went between these two communities and a lot of damage evident in this area probably up to EF4/EF5 kind of damage. Derailed a train. Haven't heard of fatalities in this area yet but wouldn't be surprised if some are found. I don't think it hit the main population parts of either area though...

11. Bremen, Kentucky - Population 200 - Took a direct hit, worst damage I've seen. Pretty safe to say this was most likely EF5. 11 fatalities reported here so far and more feared, not sure how survivable the tornado was in this particular area...

Once it approached Hartford, KY it was weakening and not clear how consistent it was after that. I haven't heard of a lot of damage in the other areas and it didn't really seem to hit any more major population areas with the vigor it did. I will update if I see anything else...

Tennesse-Kentucky Border Tornado/Cell (EF3- maybe EF4 tornado)

1. Kenton, Tennessee - Population 1,200 - First town that got hit by this system. Looks like it was probably EF2 level damage in the area. Have not heard of fatalities here...

2. Dresden, Tennessee - Population 3,000 - Town also took a direct hit. Looks like high end EF2 to EF3 damage in this area. Also not heard of any fatalities here.

3. Cottage Grove, Tennessee - Population 100 - Area took damage that appeared to be in the EF3 range. No fatalities here either...

4. Lafayette, Kentucky - Population 160 - Tornado looked very powerful when it hit this area maybe EF3/EF4 range but haven't seen any damage reports out of here.

5. Pembroke, Kentucky - Population 860 - Tornado apparently just missed. Radar presentation looked like a direct hit. Some damage but seems to be in the EF2 range...

6. Bowling Green, Kentucky - Population 70,000 - EF3 damage, significant damage across the city. Doesn't look as wide as the radar suggested but has killed at least 3 people as of now in this area. This may rise...

The track continued after this, but I haven't seen any reports out of Plum Springs or Horse Cave and it is possible the tornado was weaker or had lifted off by this point...

Other
There were other =tornadoes in MO, Illinois. 1 person was killed by an MO tornado, and 2 people died at an Amazon Fulfillment Centre after a likely EF2 tornado in Edwardsville, IL. Neither of these appear to have been long track tornadoes though...

Authorities do not know how many employees at an Amazon distribution are missing after an EF-3 tornado significantly damaged the facility killing at least six people and leaving a trail of destruction behind.

The tornado struck the facility outside of St. Louis, Missouri, after 8:30 p.m. CDT on Friday, causing support structures of the warehouse to collapse inward.

During a news conference on Saturday, officials estimated 45 workers were able to make it out of the building safely.

Edwardsville Fire Chief James Whiteford said it is unclear how many employees were in the vicinity of the facility when the severe weather struck or how many remain missing.

Quad-State Tornado related:

This kind of thing would be typical indicator of an EF5 tornado. This is down by the MO-TN border where those insanely high wind readings were measured. However, because it didn't hit any buildings in this area as far as I can see it may not get the rating as the EF scale is based on observed damage rather than observed wind speed. There are other areas which could have EF5 damage as well, but had the tornado hit stuff here I'm sure it would've been EF5 equivalent...
