California suspects busted in rash of robberies targeting Asian women
By Joshua Rhett Miller
A ruthless six-man California robbery crew preyed on Asian women, committing more than 70 heists in San Jose and as many as 177 throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, authorities said.
Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen announced the charges against the six suspects during a news conference Wednesday in San Jose’s Little Saigon section, where some of the victims, including elderly women, were attacked without warning.
The six suspects targeted their victims for robbery and “took their purses” while pouncing on them during incidents of robbery, burglary and theft in San Jose alone between October 2020 and September, Rosen said.
“And this happened to more than 100 women throughout not only Santa Clara County, but throughout the Bay Area,” Rosen told reporters. “They targeted Asian women because they thought Asian women don’t use banks and they made other ethnic slurs against Asians which I won’t repeat here.”
The suspects were identified by San Jose police as Anthony Michael Robinson, 24, of Stockton; Cameron Alonzo Moody, 27, of East Palo Alto; Derje Damond Banks, 23, of San Jose; Hassani Burleson Rasmsey, 24, of Oakland; Clarence Jackson, 21, of East Palo Alto; and Malik Short, 21, of Tracy.
Bomb explodes outside restaurant in eastern Congo
Source: Associated Press
BENI, Congo (AP) — A bomb exploded at a restaurant Saturday as patrons gathered on Christmas Day in an eastern Congolese town where Islamic extremists are known to be active.
There was no immediate word on fatalities following the blast in Beni, though images from the scene showed several lifeless bodies amid what remained of lime green plastic chairs outside the Inbox restaurant.
Shortly after the bomb went off, heavy gunfire rang out, and panicked crowds began fleeing the town’s center.
Mayor Narcisse Muteba Kashale, who is also a police colonel, urged people to return home and stay there as authorities investigated what had happened.
The town has long been targeted by rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces, or ADF, a group that traces its origins to neighboring Uganda. But an Islamic State affiliate claimed responsibility for two explosions in Beni in June, deepening fears that religious extremism has taken hold there too.
Miami real estate agent in custody as cops announce arrest of 'suspected serial killer'
Source: The Miami Herald
Calling him a “suspected serial killer,” authorities say a 25-year-old Miami real estate agent may be responsible for the killing of two homeless men and the shooting of a third.
Miami police on Thursday announced that Willy Suarez Maceo, of Kendall, was charged with the shooting of a homeless man near downtown on Tuesday night. The man survived.
About two hours later, Miami’s police chief said, Maceo is believed to have pulled up in a black Dodge Charger and from the car shot and killed another homeless man as he slept on the sidewalk in Wynwood, sparking an exhaustive around-the-clock investigation. In that case, Maceo has yet to be charged with the killing of Jerome Antonio Price, 56, a shooting that was captured on surveillance video.
Miami Interim Police Chief Manuel Morales, speaking at a press conference on Tuesday night, said sharp-eyed detectives immediately connected the two attacks.

GARLAND, Texas (AP) — Dallas-area police have charged a 14-year-old with capital murder in a triple killing at a gas station and are warning that the boy is at large, armed and dangerous.
Police in Garland are seeking Abel Elias Acosta and said Wednesday that they have evidence showing he was the gunman who left three teens dead and wounded a fourth at the suburban gas station’s convenience store Sunday.
Acosta is the son of Richard Acosta, 33, who turned himself into police Monday and is also charged with capital murder for allegedly acting as a get-away driver in the shooting, police said in a statement. A juvenile court has issued an order to take the younger Acosta into custody, police said, and authorized them to publicly release his name.
Prosecutors will determine whether the teen is charged as a minor or an adult, said Lt. Pedro Barineau.
Over 65 shots fired on busy Philadelphia street; 6 wounded
Source: CBS17
Two gunmen fired more than 65 rounds on a Philadelphia street, sending nighttime pedestrians on a busy block teeming with markets and restaurants scrambling for cover and injuring six people, at least one of them critically, police said Friday.
Police responded around 11:30 p.m. Thursday in the Germantown neighborhood and found a 21-year-old woman shot multiple times in the abdomen and chest and lying near dozens of spent casings. Officers rushed her to the hospital, where she was in critical condition Friday.
Five men ages 19 to 29 were taken with gunshot wounds by private vehicles to two hospitals, police said. All were expected to survive. Officers are looking at surveillance footage, Chief Inspector Scott Small told reporters late Thursday.
The injured woman, who suffered the most gunshot wounds, may have been the intended target, Small said. But the extensive crime scene — with a sea of casings on Germantown Avenue and bullets from at least two different-caliber semiautomatic weapons striking parked cars — made it difficult to be certain.

MOSCOW (AP) — Dozens of protesters were killed in Kazakhstan in attacks on government buildings and at least a dozen police officers died, including one who was found beheaded, authorities said Thursday.
There were attempts to storm buildings overnight in the country’s largest city, Almaty, and “dozens of attackers were liquidated,” police spokeswoman Saltanat Azirbek said. State news channel Khabar-24 cited the city commandant’s office as saying Thursday that another 353 law enforcement officers were injured in addition to the 12 killed.
Kazakhstan is experiencing the worst street protests the country has seen since gaining independence three decades ago.
